i don't see how it's bad to be weirded out by people comparing robots to irl minorities, and putting themselves in the role of the bigots this enthusiastically, especially in today's political climate. At least to me it comes across as "AIs are like black people because we hate them xdxd"

it's also not just "clanker". that one rubbed me the wrong way on its own, but they are also making "rosa sparks" jokes (the youtuber mentioned earlier liked a comment with that one in it, if we're talking about who i think we are). they are calling them "wirebacks" and making hard-r jokes about the term clanker. i can't remember the wording of it, but there was a man making a video joking about the murder of george floyd through these ai "jokes".

no one is offended on behalf of the ais. they are literally code. but anyone who is actively treating them like people to be de-humanised and making jokes that are really really obviously just racism repackaged... are just racists that were hiding it.

We should be treating teens as more adult than we do. I don't mean some lowering the age of consent creep shit, I mean presuming competence. Get a job, learn life skills, learn to cook, be fully responsible for a pet, walk places alone (in daylight) or with a friend, have intergenerational friendships, teach skills to littler kids, be someone people can trust with more than wiping their own ass. Be someone they themselves can trust to do stuff and go places. We're stealing children's confidence by treating them like they can't do anything. Treat them like they can and should do many adult things and more will find the confidence to practice at them.

Yes, the brain isn't finished growing when you're like 15. No, you shouldn't get treated like a preschooler till it is. The general experience of adulthood is like 90% practice 10% maturity I think. The maturity is needed but it doesn't account for much if you just do nothing.

YES. And with support! Teach your teens to make their own doctors appointments by sitting by them in case something comes up they don't know the answer to. Show your elementary schoolers how to cook a meal. Teach them how to read a map and guide you where they want to go. Kids are capable.

Mostly, I want to know the tone. A 19th century war story isn’t gonna do it for me when I’m in the mood for a lighthearted austenesque romance - and those are both historical. A star warsy space romp isn’t gonna do it if I want to read about interplanetary political negotiations - and those are both sci fi. A fun gratuitious don’t-think-about-it-too-hard action story is not the same as a dark and complicated mob drama. A suspenseful thriller will bore me if I’m looking for a fast paced spy novel.
