Has anyone read "Long Live the Pumpkin Queen"? If so, what are your thoughts?
I bought this book today to get into the Halloween mood (because it's August now, I only have two months to prepare). I read a lot of mixed reviews online, and several people mentioned there's some major retcon in it. I'm already seeing some issues with research and details. In the first paragraph of chapter 1, the author describes Finkelstein's lab as smelling like sodium chloride and rubbing alcohol. Sodium chloride is odorless, it's table salt. This leads me to believe that the author threw in a term that sounded scientific without doing the proper research to ensure her writing made sense.
I'm also not a fan of the super long literary sentences in this novel. In the prologue, there is a page-long paragraph made up of a whopping two sentences. I get that it's proper sentence structure and grammatically correct, but the writing is a bit too adolescent to really use the style in a productive manner. It just becomes hard to process and a mouthful to read out loud. I'm curious as to everyone else's first impressions of this book, and if they lived up to your expectations by the end. I don't mind spoilers, I'm going to read it regardless.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being a fan of Chappell Roan I just think some of them need to realize and accept that they are a fan of a mainstream popular artist making popular pop music and therefore straight people are going to play it at weddings and it’s going to be in commercials for DoorDash and stuff. And that’s literally okay. It’s actually good. It’s good and normal for gay people to be making popular music. Idk if it just hasn’t sunk in for people yet that she is very popular. i hate how "being a girl's girl" has replaced feminism. I hate that enforced conformity has replaced genuine compassion for and solidarity with other women. I hate how women call each other "pick me's" for not conforming to femininity or for daring to critique something other women like. I hate how we just keep finding new socially acceptable ways to bully other women for being unattractive or outspoken or difficult or complicated or weird or ambitious or for not performing femininity. I hate those front facing camera "comedians" whose whole thing is making up a straw-woman to make fun of. I hate the obsession with "girlhood" and clinging to being a girl instead of a woman. i hate "the girl version of the roman empire" and "girlhood" and it's just consumerism and I hate the characterised of girlhood as passivity, niceness, sweetness, helplessness and frivolity and I hate the revival of gender essentialism even as a joke!!!
