A sable and pine marten hybrid, known as a kidas or kidus, is a fertile interspecific hybrid that occurs naturally in the Ural Mountains and Siberia, where their habitats overlap. They exhibit intermediate characteristics between both species, often possessing a mix of morphological features. Studies show they often have larger ears and longer tails (like martens) but with finer, denser fur (closer to sables). Behaviorally they are more similar to sables.
Kidus were produced only by mating a male sable and a female marten. Hybrid females did not produce offspring from hybrid males, but could produce offspring from a male sable. Attempts to cross female sables with hybrid males were also unsuccessful. However, the experiment was limited by the small number of attempts to produce hybrid offspring from a small number of animals.
