Some nonhumans are alterhumans.
Some alterhumans are nonhumans.
But, not all alterhumans are nonhumans and vice versa.
Alterhumanity is defined as:
A category of personal identity which encompasses identification that is alternative to the common societal idea of humanity. [1]
Alterhumanity is a form of identity that is alternative to humanity, not exclusively without humanityâ which is something that a lot of alterhumans overlook.
The reason why some folks donât like using alterhuman for themselves, and instead use alterbeing or whatever their preferred label is (or lack thereof), is because of that allusion to humanity still being involved, depending on the individual. Which is fine, of course. Thatâs your choice to make. However, the bigger this community gets, the more common it is to see folks associate alterhumanity only with nonhumanity.
Alterhuman doesnât exclusively mean nonhuman. It is an umbrella term. It is broad and meant to encompass many experiences.
If you are talking about something that usually, or sometimes exclusively, applies to nonhumans, then just say nonhuman. For example: the contexts of packer discourse and overall discourse regarding sexual expression and animal identity arenât going to apply to an alterhuman who isnât therian. Youâre not excluding anyone by talking about something that is specific to one group, but you are potentially excluding folks by referring to alterhumans collectively and discussing something that not every alterhuman experiences.
Too many of you in OUR OWN COMMUNITY need to learn what alterhuman means.
So go ahead. Tell me what alterhuman means and what falls under it. Tell me some experiences that feel alterhuman. I want to hear it.
alterhuman means an alternative to being human, it's an identity that encompases many, many things: otherkinity, therianthropy, plurality, nonhumanity, fictionkinity, etc. it's basically anything that's slightly different from the "normal human experience", the idea of society of being human, or something like that.
some experiences of being alterhuman (I'm completely making this up and I can be wrong):
not feeling human at all
feeling like multiple people in one body, plurality, and even median systems. even dissociative disorders can fall under it, too
feeling like an animal or mythical being, aka therians, otherkins, theriomythic, etc
feeling a bit human, but not completely
feeling spiritually something different than completely human
anything related to spirituality, really
feeling like your body is not human
I think furries are also alterhuman? I can be wrong tho
being any label that the community uses like therian, otherkin, otherhearted, etc
I think daemonism is also alterhuman?
uhhhh archetropes are too I think
copinglink, otherlink and other chosen identities
and more!
Fun fact: The original coining post of this term also included furries, trans folks, spiritual mediums, and people who identify with past lives as other humans under the alterhuman umbrella, too! Paleo folk count too. And factkin. Anyone whose experience of being human doesn't fit set expectations.
Other alterhuman experiences can be feeling completely human but occasionally having shifts of different ears or claws unrelated to a kintype, feeling othered by human society for whatever reason, feeling like your neurodivergency makes you experience humanity in an alternative way, feeling so connected to a fictional character (in a non-identifying way) that it affects your sense of self, or feeling both completely human and completely your kintype.
It is not a synonym for otherkin, plural, or therian. It also isn't just a combination of 'kin and plural. It's an umbrella term, and it's a HUGE one that extends well beyond the kinmunity!
Also, it is strictly an opt-in label. You can't armchair diagnose someone as alterhuman; if they don't want to claim it, it's not their label. Some kin folks might not feel human at all, and don't want a word with "human" in their label list. Some people want to be known as completely 'kin and not alterhuman. Some people are plural but don't experience that as a shift in their humanity.
Orion Scribner wrote a really good post compiling explanations from its coiner here:
Folks have been getting confused about the meaning and purpose of the umbrella term and identity label "alterhuman." Often, people wrongly c

We need to spread otherlink and transspecies propaganda NOW. I see so many post where someone is like âI want to identify as a fox ^_^â and everyone is like âNO. Therianthropy is not voluntary, you POSER! Youâre just otherpaw!â Hey. You can willingly be an animal. You know that right? Therianthropy isnât the only form of being an alterhuman. We should educate people on labels they can use instead of assuming they are malicious.

if you're an alterhuman, therian/otherkin or fictionfolk and haven't disillusioned yourself with the concept of delusions and fantastical thinking as defined by psychiatry, to the point of refusing to call any belief "delusional" at face value, then I am here to remind you that there is nothing, absolutely nothing standing between a person diagnosed with delusions of grandeur for believing they are a wizard, and you, who sincerely believes that you are an animal or fictional character on a spiritual level. unless you are 'kin but "don't actually believe it", in which case you are not. you need to dismantle the idea of a psychotic "other", who's beliefs and experiences should not be believed/respected once they pass a certain threshold of crazy, immediately. YOU are that other to orthohumans who believe in it
I bring a certain âI belong to a universally, unjustifiably hated species on this planet so I really donât care why youâre skeptical about nonhumanity as an experienceâ to the conversation that a lot of neutrally-stanced people donât like.
Even if itâs coming from a genuine place of not understanding nonhumanity, it irritates me when folks claim itâs hard to believe since âallâ animalfolk identify as âcoolâ animals somehow (be them therian, otherkin, transspecies, etc). Itâs such a blatant generalization that I canât help but be skeptical right back at them and question why they would assume this when no experience is that linear. âWhy arenât there more bugs? Theyâre one of the largest animal populations in the world!â Iâve seen many a vent post from bugs whoâre rightfully angry that theyâre expected to trigger-tag their species when they discuss their experiences. I promise the world is bigger than whoever you see on TikTok or YouTube.
I am a member of a lot of species, but in context to my first paragraph, I am a vulture. Vultures are regularly poisoned while feeding because of either the drugs given to cattle and other livestock OR bait deliberately poisoned by human farmers/agriculturalists to âkeep pests away from their landâ (WE are the âpestsâ in question in case that wasnât clear). Weâre also considered generally âuglyâ, and since we arenât aesthetically appealing to a lot of humans, efforts for our conservation are often ignored. Itâs always a disgrace to learn when wildlife are being exploited and/or killed thoughtlessly for anotherâs gain. Imagine learning this information and having to navigate how most people view or treat said animals while BEING one of them. Worst of all, folks are comfortable projecting their views of your species onto you because they donât see you as you are. Itâs infuriating.
So no, not every animal is a âcoolâ animal by human standards. Some of us are widely hated, so much so that thereâs endlings in our community without the world even knowing it. Even some culturally âcoolâ animals have been vulnerable at some point. The fact that tigers are considered âcoolâ doesnât stop some humans from poaching them. Folks often point out wolves and their presence, but whatever âcoolnessâ folks associate with wolves doesnât change the fact that red wolves are still critically endangered in my region despite southern conversationistsâ many attempts at increasing their wild populations through captive breeding and releases since the 1980s.
Aesthetics doesnât define a community. A community having a majority group doesnât discredit the existence of their experiences either, let alone the community as a whole.
In retrospect, the opening paragraph of this feels even more poignant now that Iâve learned Iâm a scorpion as well.
