There really really ought to be a book about how the staple crops of different civilizations shape and influence those civilizations, and I really want to read it.
Salt: A World History by Mark Kurlansky and A History of the World in 6 Glasses by Tom Standage (three are alcohol, three have caffeine) are not quite that, but may still be of interest?
I read Salt back in the day and it's so so good, second the rec. I have heard of 6 Glasses and not read it but I am sure I would probably love it. Gotta see if the library has it. Thank you!
Gonna throw Empire of Cotton by Sven Beckert in the ring here! You'll never see the modern world the same way again.
A Short History Of The World According To Sheep by Sally Coulthard blew my mind. So many things are tied to wool and sheep and weaving and so many words and phrases are tied to wool, people have no idea.
Example words which come from textiles/weaving, if not specifically wool (go look them up!): subtle, shoddy, tabby, Brazil, rocket, twit, warped, going batty, on tenterhooks, text...
I'll throw in a rec for Pickled, Potted, and Canned by Sue Shephard - a very interesting look at food preservation and how the availability of different types of food preservation shaped cultures and cuisines.
Sweetness and Power is this but for the topic of sugar
The Lost Supper: Searching for the Future of Food in the Flavors of the Past might also be up your alley. It's about "forgotten" foods and staples. They talk about different types of wheat, sauces, veggies, etc and a little about the cultures from whence they come
Also: Much Depends on Dinner by Margaret Visser. One of my favourite books.
DO I HAVE A SERIES FOR YOU. University of California Press has a gift for you and it is a 80+ book series on food studies. There are even some that are open access (legally free), but the rest are in libraries.
I also highly recommend Frostbite by Nicola Twilley. It’s about the impact refrigeration has had/is having on food preservation and culture, globally. It was one of my favorite books of this last year.
Also, The Rice Theory of Culture https://scholarworks.gvsu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1172&context=orpc By Thomas Talhelm
Consider the Fork isn’t about food itself exactly but all about cooking technology and how it changed how and what we eat
ok this is insanely cool
the organization that runs it is called Helping Hands, here's their website and how to join tutoring sessions in their world!
https://helpinghands.gg
Omfg they made a whole language for this
genuinely, from the bottom of my heart:
if you can’t read or write 500-1000 words with relative ease you have a serious problem
how are all the teenagers who complain about writing 500 words for homework going to get through college without AI
how are you going to function in society if you can’t read 1000 words at a time
This is a FIXABLE problem, by the way!
Pick a topic you like, and that's what you're going to read about. Set a minimum word count, and read until you get to it. Start small. Smart easy. First try, it might actually be agonizing.
That's it for the day. Just hit the word count.
Next day, read to the word count again. Read something new! It will be easier today.
And easier the next.
And you will naturally find yourself extending how much you read per day.

C'est pour aujourd'hui ou pour demain?
(imagine it said with a tone of annoyance)
-> What are you waiting for? Christmas?// We don't have all day ! literally: "Is it for today or tomorrow?"
In a long line of ways to express frustration in French, this expression is a classic that you should imagine said by someone who's reaching the limits of their patience and really wants X thing or person to get going/be done. Think: waiting on someone so you can both go somewhere; waiting for someone to finally do something you've talked about before, waiting for someone to decide what they're going to order at a restaurant, waiting for a delivery to arrive, for a live show to start...

We need to bring back crompire (derived from grundbirn) as a name for potato :O
Not least because it sounds like an undead potato that sucks your blood
My personal favourite is the Luxembourgish version of crompire, which is 'gromper'. I really enjoy gromper. Gromper is a good word for what those things are.
Its wiktionary entry is a personal favourite as well:

Hello, I am Iranian.
Everyone keeps asking the same question over and over: what's wrong with the leftists? Why are they so noisy, why do they support the Gaza Strip, but remain completely silent when it comes to Iran? The answer is simple: because the truth exposes the lie. Because acknowledging Iran destroys the ideological fantasy they have built. Let's be clear: the Islamic Republic of Iran is not a victim of Western imperialism. It is a theocratic authoritarian regime that exists by exporting violence, funding Islamist groups, and suppressing its own people. Yes, it funds Hamas. It funds Hezbollah.
All these small proxy groups in the region and worldwide are financed with Iranian money — not government or regime money, but stolen funds: money taken from workers who today in Iran cannot even afford bread; from families destroyed by inflation; from women who are beaten, imprisoned, tortured, and raped for refusing religious submission. And that is exactly why the leftists are silent: because Hamas feeds their narrative, but the Iranian people do not. Because Islamist violence against Israelis can be turned into "resistance," but Islamist violence against Iranians reveals the truth. At this very moment, as you read this, Iran — a country with over 92 million people — is being destroyed in real time.
Almost a complete blackout for more than 24 hours: no internet, no phone connection, no communication at all. And — silence. No "urgent protests" at Western universities, no hashtags, no statements of solidarity, no megaphones. Because the suffering of Iranians does not fit their agenda.
Because modern leftist movements are no longer driven by human rights — they are driven by selective outrage and ideological loyalty.
They will scream about censorship — unless it is done by an Islamist regime.
They will condemn state violence to the fullest — but will never say a word if that violence is wrapped in religious language. They chant "Free Palestine," but will never say "Free Iran," because that would require one difficult admission: that political Islam is not liberation — it is domination. And, by the way, this is happening in the West today as well. The Islamic Republic is not anti-imperialist; it is imperialist toward its own people. Hamas is not an isolated resistance group; it is part of a broader Islamist ecosystem funded, trained, and supported by regimes like the Islamic Republic of Iran. Here is the part they do not want to hear: You cannot claim moral superiority while justifying a regime that kills women and punishes them for refusing the hijab, kills protesters, cuts off the internet for a 92-million-strong nation, and uses foreign proxy groups to cover up its own internal collapse. You cannot pretend to care about Palestinians while ignoring Iranians who are being shot, tortured, and killed by the Islamic Republic. This is not solidarity — this is ideological blindness.
The Iranian people are not silent — they are forced into silence. The silence of Western leftists is their choice: a choice to defend ideology, justify Islamism, and turn a blind eye to the suffering of millions because the pain of the Iranian people complicates the slogan. History will remember this moment. It will remember who spoke about universal freedom and who decided that some lives are less important than preserving a narrative. Long live Iran."
The Passionate Torah ed. by Danya Ruttenberg
In the last few decades feminism and queer liberation have incited discussions of sexuality, and with them a whole new set of questions that challenge time-honored traditions.Yet as The Passionate Torah illustrates, it’s critically important to see beyond this apparent conflict if Jews are to embrace both their religious beliefs and their sexuality.

here's a link to the free pfd of Ur-Fascism by Umberto Eco. It's a 10 pages long essay in which the author talks about his own experience with fascism and then tries to list the 14 elements that make up fascism in all its historical forms.

im seeing a noticeable uptick in posts from goyim exclaiming over the sky rocketing antisemitism they're just now noticing. and like. yay. better late than never, i vastly prefer this to the alternative.
but i have a few teensy questions.
like: what made you notice now? What is it about Now that you picked up on? Why weren't immediate chants to "gas the Jews" and people being murdered outside of a museum and set on fire at a peaceful protest and countless synagogues being vandalized and a Jewish girl being raped in France and and not enough?
and: Jews TOLD you immediately after Oct 7 that this was going to happen. We told you and we offered advice and pleaded with goyim to listen to us, to include us so that we could help guide away from the antisemitic rhetoric. but we were told to shut up and get out. why was that not your first sign? where were you then?
why did it take Jewish blood being spilled to wake you up? why were you content to at best stay silent and at worst add fuel to the fire?
i am glad you are waking up. but now i have THE most important question for you:
What are you going to do about it now that you see it?
As someone casually learning both Japanese and French, I've gotta say that Japanese feels like speaking a language and French feels like drowning. You can prime yourself for Japanese by practicing the basic sounds—ka ke ko ku ki ba be bo bu bi (hehe), but you have to prime yourself for French by tilting your head back and gargling hot coffee. Why are there so many sounds waaay at the base of the throat. Why is the G like that. Why france
