Don't by shy to call your own Senate Democrats to complain about AES and let them know you're feeling Uncommitted toward Michigan, either. Tell them to pass your message along. The key is to be the loudest ones in the room.
Even for those of you who have phone anxiety, I deeply deeply encourage you to speak to a rep about this. Let them know how disgusted you are that the Democrats are stabbing us in the back for the DSA. Let them know how disgusted you are that they let that Nazi in Maine into the tent. Let them know how their actually loyal voters are feeling and tell them to pass it on to the Senate Democrats.
I've been thinking about the obsession with needing a "queer history of the holocaust".
I think it is genuinely an impulse towards a kind of stolen valour via holocaust minimisation and subversion, not because being slaughtered in our millions was in any way valorous, but I think there's assumed to be a level of sympathy that comes with recognition that we were subjects of genocide.
So by making an equivalency between the thousands of queer people who were interned in concentration camps to the millions of Jews and Romani who were murdered in the death camps, they elevate the travesty of anti-queer violence in Nazi controlled Europe from its own tragedy to being a part of the genocide widely known as the holocaust.
That "people like me suffered too, why don't we get mentioned in this conversation?", goes from a conversation about having a memorial, to a demand to be on another community's memorial for their different suffering because it's bigger.
It's also - and I say this with respect in my heart for the people who were hurt and white-hot fury for those responsible - a different kind of tragedy.
The tragedy of the Nazi persecution of queer people is an intellectual and cultural one. Relatively few people were actually killed, but a generation who might have been coming out, and who were beginning to be heard and vibrant and public and happy (in some places - not all! Munich was not Berlin!) were driven instead into shame and secrecy. The most prominent elders were lost. The entire archive of the Inside for Sexual Science was gone, including vital work in gender-affirming care.
This is a bad thing!
However, the Jews of Europe lost all of that and also two thirds of their population. (Numbers for the Sinti/Roma are harder to find, but as near as I can figure it's about the same proportion).
They should each be treated as what they are, not minimised for what they're not.
Gotta be honest, I feel like jumblr has a really big ableism problem and it makes me really sad to see it. The r slur is never acceptable and I’ve seen it used and excused several times.
It also really feels like it’s just become a really hateful and miserable place in general. I completely understand why everyone is so jaded. I am also jaded and exhausted and I feel like every day I’m hit with new antisemitism somewhere completely randomly. I don’t feel like I have anyone to talk to about it. It fucking sucks. I get it. But that’s not an excuse or a reason to be hateful back, start name calling, be racist, or ableist.
I love being Jewish. I am so proud to be Jewish. But one of the things I loved most was our kindness, and I’m not seeing that in the community right now. It makes me so sad. I don’t feel safe in queer spaces anymore. I don’t feel safe in disabled spaces anymore. I used to feel safe here, but I don’t know if I do anymore, and I’m just sad.
.
this is semi-adjacent, but it's not a jumblr only problem, it's a current social media problem. creators using the r word, and relying on other horrible ableism, is rising everywhere. it's disheartening.
I literally just unfollowed a queer, Black, Jewish creator on IG because she posted the most heinously callous video laughing at a girl who was explaining how hard applying for disability is and how it made her want to give up. like that was all she was doing, sitting there laughing at this young woman describing how she was suffering, no commentary, just being cruel for the sake of it. being disabled and chronically ill and in extreme constant pain, I know the disability process is hell on earth, designed to exhaust you and work against you, and made to shut people in need out. the process took me years only for a denial. it was dehumanizing. if some stranger on the internet was making fun of me sharing how awful it was, it would break me even further. I couldn't believe I had to see that happening to someone this morning.
there is no excuse for things like this. there is no excuse for slurs, there is no excuse for ableism, just like there isn't for racism or any other type of discrimination. the fact that the Jewish community has suffered and been through a repeated cycle of horrors should make us more caring, not less.
anon, I haven't been feeling particularly safe either (a worse feeling after every other space has basically been closed to us), and I'm so sorry. I hope you're okay and am sending you encouragement. 🤍
big contribution to this issue is the causal adding of “tard” to the end of words to make new insults, and people somehow think that’s socially acceptable even if they’re anti r-slur, which I’ve seen way too much of recently. all it does is desensitize people to saying the actual word, but we all know what that means and it’s still part of a slur. I’ve gotten into actual arguments on jumblr with grown adults about the r-slur use and it’s just mind-boggling. “well why can’t I call them that if that’s what they are? they probably call us worse!” is stuff I’ve actually been told. like way to miss the point there, bucko. there’s just no excuse for using slurs no matter what the slur is. at the end of the day, it just says a lot about your character, that’s for sure.
yes, and this is one of many reasons to reject 4chan language like that. this includes “-oid,” NPC, it’s all so degrading and numbs people to the effects of that cruelty and the impact it has on others. it’s unacceptable to respond, “well, they probably say terrible things about us,” that’s not a defense. if someone’s excuse is other people’s bad behavior, then they’re admitting that they’re fine with sinking to that level with them. we’re witnessing in real time the detriment of slurs and hatred weaponized against us and how it’s normalizing antisemitism. we’ve seen allies attacked with racist, homophobic, and ableist slurs as well. this actually is that serious, we have a responsibility to consider this and to not add to oppressive stereotypes and discrimination.
Do they....do not realize that BOTH parties have primaries and there's a winner of each and thats how who you vote for in the general is determined?

A concerning amount of y’all seem to think that being racist is a morally neutral position, instead of a prejudice that you are supposed to work on dismantling such as sexism, homophobia, and so on. I’d suggest watching kindergarten level cartoons to learn about treating others like human beings but some of y’all already do that and it’s not doing the trick.
I don’t know how to say this without sounding like a broken record. A lot of y’all talk about misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, etc but don’t wanna summon the same vim when racism is brought up. Using the excuse that this is a predominantly white space is the same line of thinking as “boys will be boys” when men do something sexist. A group of ppl being of a certain demographic that doesn’t experience a form of bigotry doesn’t excuse their perpetuating of it. If you think a guy should check his peers when they’re being misogynistic, then you should check your white peers when they’re similarly being racist. And similarly if you are disgusted when a guy tries to shrug off misogyny and say it’s not a big deal, and do the same exact thing when it comes to racism think for TWO SECONDS how that makes you look!
To neatly summarize, if you consider yourself a progressive person and combat bigotry where it appears but stop short when racism rears its head, it’s not a good look. If your compassion evaporates on the axis of racial discrimination, it will call into question your judgment on other bigotries as they’re tangled in a messy web of oppression. I’m not expecting you to be Malcom X up in here, but for the love of everything on this earth stop acting like it’s not a big deal.
one of my immediate gripes with whipping girl is the WHITE author co-opting the VERY REAL oppressive tool of a whip for metaphorical means pertaining to her white experiences
I have never been comfortable with that and remain uncomfortable with it and any iteration of white people utilizing the specter of a whip or being whipped to describe their oppression or violence inflicted upon them. I do think the complete lack of discussion about this and the very clear fact that most, if not all of the people who revere and constantly defend that text, have never even *thought* for a moment about the optics of such and how it might make Black people, particularly diasporic dependents of chattel slavery (like myself), feel at all. I think it is emblematic of the ways that transmisogyny theory has consistently disregarded the way gender is racialized under white supremacy (as the entire book essentially ignores how race impacts gender) and demonstrates how it has become a fairly blatantly white supremacist ideology that centers white experiences of gender and oppression and treats racial violence and oppression as secondary as opposed to interconnected with gendered oppression.
“You need to read Whipping Girl so you can know your place”
Actual phrase said to me (btw, after I’d already read this book twice at this point — now I’m at about 5 full reads).
People don’t care about how their ideologies or terminology or grammar they create and use affect Black people frfr. Antiblackness has always and will always be treated as a tertiary esoteric threat that Black people are being too uppity about. Transmisogyny theory crusaders do not give a fuck about Black people and never have. They only care about Black trans women as symbols, tokens, representatives of death, props.
It all feels like noise to me at this point. But yeah anon. Yeah.
[added: no, saying transmisogyny theory is like this is not dismissing the existence of transmisogyny. Transmisogyny is real, the ideology built up surrounding such is not something I must opt into or defend to recognize transmisogyny as a real and violent force of oppression. before you fucking try it. god damn bad faith losers.]
Environmental storytelling or something like that
Interesting how the transfeminine version got marked mature literally *as* I posted it, very clearly hitting some sort of automated filter, while the cis version was untouched by the filter even though it was otherwise identical
you know what i’m actually so sick of all the supposedly inclusive trans spaces where everyone tells people to just DIY their hormones as if DIYing testosterone isn’t a fucking felony
if you tell trans men to DIY their hormones you are literally advising them to do something that will almost definitely get them thrown into the prison system which we all know is super duper fucking safe for trans people right
I know we talk a lot about the literacy crisis and the horrible anti-intellectualism happening rn but I think we need to talk more about how much of an entitlement complex the stupidest among us have developed
Imagine not finding joy in being able to say “I just learned a new word!”

This is why you see so many many many "we can't vote our way out of this" posts online. They know that sentiment will depress turnout. Turnout that will get the people paying them kicked out of power.
Vote
Hungarian voters were smart on an individual level, throwing their support behind Magyar over how they might have traditionally voted, but there was an institutional element to it as well: it took most of the other parties dropping out of contention in order to clear the decks and avoid vote-splitting, which was a brave and principled thing for them to do.
i have for a while been using stepping on somebody's toes as a metaphor for misgendering. and i genuinely think that it's kind of a good one.
if you keep stepping on somebody's toes for a long time at minimum they're probably going to start really hating you and at maximum you might cause them lasting damage.
if you do it on purpose you're a dick. if it's on accident but you keep doing it that person is still going to be mad at you because you don't care enough to try not to step on their toes
if you give a grovelling begging apology after accidentally stepping on somebody's toes one time you're going to make the whole thing awkward, but not giving a quick "sorry" before moving on is still kind of rude.

One thing I wish more gentiles understood is that modern Judaism is post-apocalyptic, and every Jew they've ever met is living after the apocalypse.
The damn apocalypses overlap

My HebCal app: Elul starts next week.
Me:
As a teen I had school end at 4 and I was told to start preparing for bed at 9pm. So like it very much felt like I had free time never
My brain is also a complete fuzzball between 3-8pm so like school was torture because I had no time to do anything except stare at homework I couldn’t focus on. So I would often have to secretly stay up late or wake up early to sneak… doing homework
“Remember all the free time you had as a kid?” No. I remember The Fucking Homework
