In addition to the hateful slideshows themselves, the comments underneath are rife with hate. For example, one repeated comment we saw was "Well, well, well.” This is a racist and antisemitic dog-whistle posted repeatedly under TikToks with Jewish and Black/African American themes.

In online comment sections, people may use the phrase “every single time,” “well, well, well,” or a variation referencing the previous two such as “what do we say 3 times.” These phrases convey an antisemite’s or white supremacist’s belief that anyone they find problematic is always revealed to be Jewish, or in some cases, a different targeted minority group.

Firefighters, pilots and equipment operators are mobilized across much of Indian Country in Washington and Oregon, to rein in wildfires that have endangered many tribal communities.

There are many things that Maria, who just graduated from high school, stressed about over the past four years: grades, her varsity-basketball team practice and game schedules, the usual friend drama, crushes, college applications. Not on that list: a forced genital exam to determine whether she was “really” female. Maria grew up in Washington State and has been playing basketball since she was 5 years old, often on all-girls teams, and she never had to prove anything beyond her skill to do so. But if she were still a senior come November, she, along with her teammates and every other school-sports-playing girl across the state, could be required to do exactly that.

This fall, voters will weigh in on IL26-638, a ballot initiative seeking to amend Washington state law to bar transgender athletes from participating on girls’ sports teams specifically. If it passes, the measure would impose special eligibility requirements on athletes from kindergarten through high school, mandating that a health-care provider certify the players’ sex assigned at birth through genetic screening, a testosterone-levels test, or an examination of their reproductive anatomy at their yearly sports physical.

Those physicals, Maria explains, are usually perfunctory: “Like, Are you walking normally? Are you lightheaded? I have never had to take any clothes off. I’ve never felt uncomfortable or violated.” If IL26-638 were to pass and Maria were still in school, she says she would likely drop out of her team. (We’re withholding Maria’s real name to protect her privacy.) “I honestly don’t know if I would be able to do these tests,” she adds. “It would also make me question, If I do it, are all my teammates going to too? Or would I just play with the three or four girls who are willing to or have access to do it?”

IL26-638 comes amid a furious backlash against transgender rights. Sports specifically have been a field of contentious debate. Just recently, WNBA star Sophie Cunningham sparked controversy when she echoed conservative talking points framing trans female athletes as a threat to their cisgender counterparts, claiming she wants to “protect women’s sports” from “biological men.” Since 2020, 27 states have restricted trans athletes’ ability to participate in girls’ and women’s sports, citing similar concerns around fairness and safety. In June, the Supreme Court ruled in West Virginia v. B.P.J. that such bans are constitutional. In addition to Washington State, Arizona and Colorado will have voters weigh in on whether to implement this type of ban. But IL26-638 is “the most extreme measure of its kind in the country in the mechanisms by which it forces all girls to have their sex assigned at birth verified by a health-care provider,” says Libby Watson, the campaign manager for No Hate in WA State.

Voters I spoke to, like Maria and Watson, are frustrated that this type of attack is coming to Washington of all places, a state with a track record as one of the most progressive in the country when it comes to LGBTQ+ rights. “It’s not reflective of who we are. It’s unbelievable to think we would be subjecting kids to these kinds of invasive medical exams that have no basis in health or safety,” says Lauren Hipp, a mother of three and the national director of early education at the advocacy group MomsRising. “One of my daughters is a rising fourth-grader, and she played a sport last year. Are you going to ask a fourth-grader to undergo this?”

the ‘g slur’ isn’t just an american issue. the reason some european roma prefer the slur is because, in many countries, there is no term for roma that isn’t a slur, and it’s either the g slur or the literal translation of the n word. i’m romanian, and if you used the slur in my hometown, you’d get slapped, since we just use ‘roma’.

we live in every continent across the world. some of the largest romani populations exist in south america, predominantly in brazil. they are no more and no less roma than their european counterparts, and they, like romani in asia, africa, etc all face unique challenges and oppression.

Today marks the 78th anniversary of the liquidation of the Zigeunerlager (Gypsy Camp) at Auschwitz. A day when 2,897 Roma and Sinti men, women and children were murdered in the gas chambers of the Auschwitz extermination camp.

It is also a day when we remember the hundreds of thousands of Roma who were murdered or died of starvation or disease in other concentration camps across Europe. Many more were imprisoned, used as forced labour or subject to forced sterilisation and medical experimentation.
