WIP of a fic I'm trying to work on:
āWhy am I even here?ā Grian muttered as he hauled the anchor over the edge of the boat, listening to the telltale crack of metal meeting stone before sitting back down on sun warmed oak benches. He had decided to go fishing in the middle of the heatwave because of course he did, he never has any great ideas. As to why he's on a boat in the middle of the tropical ocean? His main job is at a marine rescue centre for merfolk, Void Rescue and Rehabilitation, named after the God of Protection Voidhelm. And yes he thinks Xisuma was being stupid when he decided on that name. Anyways, he's one of the main caretakers and in charge of the pools. The reason he is fishing in the middle of the tropical ocean is to check if any injured merfolk have turned up as there is very little marine traffic, any and all ships not owned by the rescue centre need Xisumaās explicit permission to travel through this part of the ocean. Hell, even the rescue centre itself only sends ships to this area to rescue injured merfolk, it's why his fishing trips happen as Xisuma doesn't want to send out anything bigger just to check if there's merfolk, and Grian completely agrees.
He is getting very off topic, he came here to fish first and foremost. Now where'd he put the fishing rod because the bait box is at his feet? Oh there. And it's empty, Scar must have gotten into the bait box again. Scar was one of the merfolk that lived in the centre after a run in with a cargo ship's propeller tore up his tail. Grian isn't exaggerating that by the way, a large chunk of Scarās tail is prosthetic and was handmade by Xisuma. Getting off topic yet againā¦
āOh!ā Grian almost missed the unfamiliar dark shape pass under his boat, not one of the merfolk he's familiar with. What tail shape was that? There it is again, whale shark from what he can tell, does he have sardines? Yes, yes he does. He leaned over the edge of the boat and whistled, effectively getting the merfolkās attention as he set the sardines down on the water's surface. Ok. That was a loud growl from the-
Nope! That's a fishing trawler! Where's his radio? Under the seat, come on, be on the common frequency you damn thing. Ah ha, that's the boatās radio.
āPlease state your lane permit for this portion of the Heradonna Ocean.ā They won't have one, Xisuma doesn't permit fishing trawlers in the ocean since they use nets almost exclusively. Grian just needs to catch them out so he has reason to demand they turn around and exit the area.
āWe don't need a permit for fucking fish!ā Oh great, those types of people, he's going to have to radio Xisuma to get Xander down here with the authorities to clear them out, isn't he? Or maybe not if Gem is up to something, she better not sink the damn boat. Gem doesn't live in the centre but she's made a home in the nearby trench, for some reason despite being a giant oceanic manta ray merfolk. They met after she was brought in for a head-on collision with a cruise ship, which apparently didn't āhurt at allā, her words, not his. Gem is actually quite small for her subspecies of merfolk, the average size for giant oceanic manta ray merfolk is around 15 foot, much like the actual species but Gem is only just over 8 foot. That is somehow the fault of her twin brother that Grian has yet to meet.
He really needs to stop getting sidetracked, Voidhelm he's scatterbrainedā¦
Why is he copying Xisuma's mannerisms? No, focus, Gem needs to be stopped before she makes a stupid decision.
