STRANGER THINGS FANS PLEASE STAY FOR A MOMENT!!!
Iāve been trying to make a coherent post about this for days, but every time I sat down to write it, I got too annoyed and closed the tab before I could finish.
There is a certain corner of fandom internet that seems to operate under the belief that ādark humorā means saying the most horrible thing imaginable and then acting confused when people are disturbed by it.
And Iām not talking about ship wars. Iām not talking about āI like this character and you like that character.ā I mean actual racist comments, jokes about suicide, jokes about š, jokes about murder, and constant attacks on both fictional characters and real people. At some point, some people stop being edgy and start being exhausting.
There is this Gamze person, Who is active in both TikTok and X, and i am pretty sure iāve already mentioned her in an other post. She repetitively shares disturbing posts and comments, and i feel extramely mad. And then thereās the bizarre celebrity obsession side of things.
Apparently this āfanā has developed telepathic Wi-Fi with celebrities and forgot to tell the rest of us, since she apperantly knows the actors much better than the actors themselves.
Meanwhile, the most frustrating part of all of this is that reporting often feels completely useless.
You report content thatās joking about suicide. No violation.
You report racist content. No violation.
You report content celebrating violence. No violation.
At this point, the moderation system feels like a smoke detector that only goes off when someone burns down the building.
Maybe Iām old-fashioned, but I think fandom should be fun. Debate characters. Argue about ships. Write essays that are longer than university dissertations about why your favorite character deserved better. But if your entire online personality is built from racism, cruelty, and shock value, maybe the problem isnāt that everyone else is ātoo sensitive.ā
I knew I recognized this TikTok user somewhere- they posted this last month, claiming the Bylers and Sadie fans were "making fun" of Finn at the Met Gala:
The absolute gall of them to say this when I'm now finding out about their own bullshit?? Projection at its finest!
Everyday I lament that a show so focused on "championing the freaks and outcasts" ended up attracting an audience who's the exact opposite of that over the course of its run
(yet another reason why Conformitygate needs to happen)
