I've been thinking about this for a while but... have you seen BBC's version Sherlock? S02E02 is called The Hounds of Baskerville (modern, kind of losely version of the og story, I think, correct me if I'm wrong).
Sherlock and John travel to the village of Dartmoor after a man named Henry Knight claims he saw a gigantic, glowing hound the night his father was killed years earlier. Henry has lived with the trauma ever since and believes the creature has returned.
Their investigation leads them to Baskerville, a top-secret military research facility where illegal experiments were once conducted. Sherlock and John discover that the "hound" is not a supernatural beast at all, but the result of a powerful hallucinogenic chemical called H.O.U.N.D. The gas causes people to experience their worst fears, making ordinary animals, or even shadows, appear as terrifying monsters.
The villain is revealed to be Dr. Bob Frankland, who was involved in the original experiments and murdered Henry's father to keep the secret hidden. He had continued using the chemical to manipulate and terrorize Henry. Frankland is eventually exposed and killed while trying to escape across a military minefield.
In the end, Sherlock explains that the legendary "Hound of the Baskervilles" was simply a myth amplified by fear, trauma, and scientific manipulation rather than a supernatural creature. The episode explores themes of fear, perception, trauma, and the danger of unethical scientific experimentation.
And I've been thinking about this because we know Hawkins Lab used LSD as part of its experiments. But what if the lab was/is also using hallucinogenic chemicals? As a way to manipulate perception. To make people see monsters. To make them question what's real. Or even to weaponize fear itself.
I can't help wondering whether ST is playing with a similar idea.
