you play as jin zixuan. after a long series of various events and misunderstandings, you come to understand that your acquaintance jiang yanli, who you once wrote off as average, is in fact a perfect soul who you desperately want to marry. the only problem now is that she 1. is still convinced that you hate her, 2. probably hates your loser ass too, and 3. is surrounded by men and women who are far more qualified to date her than you are. #1 and #2 can hopefully be resolved eventually with enough time, effort, and apologies.....but #3 seems to render that impossible, since if you're not careful any one of these "more qualified" bachelor/ettes might snap her up first!!!!!
you immediately identifies wei wuxian as your biggest threat, because from your (jin zixuan's) pov, wei wuxian is jiang yanli's male childhood friend who she super dotes on. after seeing how close they are, you are initially almost ready to give up - except then you find out that lan wangji is gay and in love with wei wuxian, and thus realize that you can eliminate wei wuxian as a threat if wangxian get together.Â
you then realize that this also applies to everyone else you see as a romantic threat. so, because you are a problem solver, you come up with a solution: before any of jiang yanli's friends can make a move on her, you will find a way to pair them all off with each other. that way, they will all be too busy dating each other and your path to yanli's heart will be (relatively) clear.Â
so instead of being a dating sim, the objective of the visual novel is to help all the various side couples involving yanli's friends get together, so none of them can threaten xuanli.Â
ideally, the game will let you freely choose which couples to push together, so there will be a wide variety of routes and endings.
("jiang yanli's friends" in this game is just the set that includes all the mdzs characters more commonly shipped with each other. jiang cheng is there, but he's yanli's brother so he's not a threat. so zixuan's strategy for him is just to keep him available on the side, so he can be paired up with whoever's left over after all the other matches have been made but is still a high enough threat.)

conditions for victory:
wei wuxian must be paired with someone.
everyone from the high-risk group is paired off.
a maximum of 1 person from the medium-risk group is left unpaired; everyone else from the medium-risk group is paired off.
yanli approval score (explained below) is above a certain threshold.
you do not need to pair up anyone from the low-risk group in order to win; the low-risk group is there purely to help you. pairing off people in the high- and medium-risk group is necessary not because they are actually a threat to xuanli, but rather because jin zixuan will only feel secure enough to confess once almost all of his perceived romantic rivals have been removed.
some game notes:
throuples are allowed.
while wangxian is the most straightforward way to eliminate wei wuxian as a threat, the game also allows for other wei wuxian pairings. in other words, you as the player can betray lan wangji by pairing wei wuxian up with someone else instead - in which case the game is still winnable (ie. jin zixuan can still get together with jiang yanli, which is the victory condition), but you also unlock a special CG of lan wangji crying.
the achievement of the victory condition is decided not just by whether or not you successfully pair everyone else up, but also by a hidden metric called the yanli approval score. this is calculated by your interactions with wei wuxian, jiang cheng, and jiang yanli herself as the game continues: if you are kind to them, then the score goes up, and if you are rude to them, then the score goes down. if your yanli approval score is low enough upon the game's end, then yanli will still refuse to date zixuan even if you've successfully paired everyone else off.
notably, attempting to pair jiang cheng up with someone and then failing nets you a severe yanli approval score demerit, while successfully pairing up jiang cheng with someone nets you a high yanli approval score increase. interestingly, pairing chengxian together nets you the highest increase in yanli approval score.
if you get nielan together and then do not pair up jin guangyao with anyone, then the game gives you the option of putting in the hard work to help him network. it is highly recommended that you take this option, as if you do not, jin guangyao will expose to jiang yanli everything you as jin zixuan have done in the least flattering terms possible, which will make yanli unwilling to date zixuan and will net you a game over.
if you get xiyao together and then do not pair up nie mingjue with anyone, then the game gives you the option of putting in the hard work to find him a hobby. it is highly recommended that you take this option, as if you do not, nie huaisang will push jin zixuan into the traffic and you will get a game over.
if you intend on pairing up jiang cheng with anyone other than wei wuxian himself, then wei wuxian will run interference against you; a successful strategy therefore must include anti-wei-wuxian measures. this remains true even if you previously helped wangxian get together, because wei wuxian is an ungrateful bastard.
if you intend on pairing up jiang cheng with lan xichen, then both wei wuxian and lan wangji will run interference. because of this, the xicheng route is probably the hardest route involving jiang cheng in the entire game; to compensate for this, the xicheng route also has the second-most CGs (after wangxian).
if you get jin guangyao together with someone, then he will offer his assistance to you for the rest of the game. this translates into additional stats, intel, and information on who likes who the most, which will make the rest of your run easier.
if you get nie mingjue together with someone, then nie huaisang will offer his assistance to you for the rest of the game as well. nie huaisang offers the same assistance as jin guangyao above, but he also includes his own commentary and opinions.
you (as jin zixuan) cannot date anyone else. sorry zixuan x other shippers, this is a xuanli game.
Shen jiu is an impossible character or the problems you get when a character whos not supposed to suddenly gets a fandom
so i lurked a bit on twitter and saw some shen yuan vs shen jiu discourse and thought to myself - i don't have time today, i have to work on something that im procrastinating on for weeks...

anyway shen jiu vs shen yuan is what happens when you make the original goods to prominent in your novel while holding your characters to a weird double standard
and this shouldn't be a problem but judging from the extras that came after the novel it seems to be a problem for MXTX
lets begin (BTW its awhile since i read the novel and i interacted a lot with fanon - i'll try to stay accurate but i cant help my fanon brain
in every isekai where the mc replaces a character at some point the question will be relevant what happened to the OG-character
most stories handle that in three ways:
1) dont worry about it they were scum anyway (we will never speak of this again)
2) the mc is actually the OG character just in a time loop/a reincarnation (so dont worry about it, we will never speak of this again)
3) the OG character is a complicated character, a lingering ghost who will get some closure during the story or agrees with his/her non-existence (sometimes even playing a prominent role during the story)
so imo scum villain tried to be category 1 and somehow slid into category 3. you werent supposed to worry about it because the og was supposed to be scum you see. he didn't deserve his place in the world, he made everyone miserable, he's responsible for Binghes pain, he's lecherous, everything he does turns to ash etc etc.
and than plot and themes happened:
scum villain is supposed to be a story about the fact that noone is irredeemable and even the worst person can become loveble if someone good takes care of them at least on the surface. that is a theme it never managed to keep because everyone from huahua palace except gonji xao was irredeemably evil anyway but you get the sentiment (BTW if you want to read a fanfiction that manages to cash in those themes far better than the og story read tarnished gold from prim the amazing)
But the scum villain got the ~he's more complicated~ treatment. 1) because he's a mystery of the story that needs to be unravelled - he's the example that some things are more complicated than they appear on the surface. 2) because some things of his past needed to be not be true so they wouldnt tarnish shen yuans reputation: shen jiu couldn't be a sex pest so his body was virginal for Binghe, he couldn't be a cold blooded murderer so that Haitang didn't have a leg to stand on,
At the same time you needed to have challenges which couldn't just come from shen jiu.
something not a lot of people talk about is that in a story where the hero doesn't want anything, the antagonist drives the story. LBH was supposed to be a white lotus- a victim of circumstances - so he couldn't do anything. if shen yuan is in shen jius place he won't do anything. but we still need plot to happen- so the murder of liu qingge for example becomes a nearly fatal qi deviation, the system has to force shen yuan to throw binghe in the abyss.
But shen jiu isn't supposed to be a passive character. he's scum, he doesn't care. he will murder you if needed. So why would he stay in qing jing peak. Enter yue qingyuan and his very complicated relationship to shen jiu
before you know it you have a fully formed compelling character who looks very much like a pretty innocent victim that just got slaughtered by the OG Binghe (who it cannot be said enough is a legit bad guy - a rapist, a murderer, a tyrant, a world destroyer, an incel power fantasy - if you wanted to see scum look no further - i say that with love but it is what it is).
Shen jius's resentment isn't laid to rest (he never heard Yue Qingyuans confession and his enemies where never defeated) and he exists now as an unsolved tragedy in you little comedy you have to worry about. after all he got his life stolen by your supposedly good protagonist. leaves a bit of a bad after taste, doesn't it?
so what is an author to do: make the scum scummy again
enter the first extra which is very well written but on a meta level so fucking funny because it bends over backwards to convince us that a) its all shen jius fault that people misunderstood him, he was a cold blooded killer (hello wu yanzi) and he had legit beef with binghe and tried to kill this child out of jealousy multiple times (you see he did give LBH a faulty cultivation manual, not ming fan...)
it made the character even better imo - and not just imo -
people didn't accept the ~the world would be better without him ~ narrative and produced their fanfiction -
and quite honestly it could've ended here
especially because you could've argued at this point that shen yuan and shen jiu were the same person in different incarnations. it would've even made the story stronger as a whole because it would've fit right into to theme of how you grow up shapes what you becomes - shen jiu suffers abuse after abuse -> self hating abuser LBH suffers abuse after abuse -> terrible tyrant. shen jiu grows up as a lazy second son (something he's accused of in the story) -> becomes a pretty decent and nice person who in turn doesn't abuse LBH -> the scum villain self saving system saved the scum villain by putting a version of himself in the story whose decisions wouldn't turn him into a stick
the bing-ge/bing-mei extra wouldn't be a problem anymore. they are the same person. it also solves the problem that bing-mei never met shen yuan in his real body - shen jius body is in fact shen yuans body, - it also would explain why the differences betweeen shen jiu and shen yuan weren't so bad that the peak lords had to act -> - they are the same. you can even have bingjiu and bingyuan as parallel ships because they are in fact the same ship just in different iterations -> don't worry about it.
but instead MXTX spun the block and doubled down on shen yuan not being shen jiu but instead a really good ceo that binghe of course loved while shen jiu was a scummy abuser in all of his lifetimes because he didn't love OG-Binghe who of course is an innocent little bean and may not be judged for any of his actions ever. Shen jiu deserved his life to be taken away by someone better and also he secretly wanted it anyway and now i'm here and think:
so a slave who worked himself up from the dirt, who fought for everything he had, who got abused again and again only to be killed by an entitled heavenly demon who wants access to his body gets his live stolen by a rich ceo with a loving family who got everything he wanted from the start
got really into reading item descriptions on this playthrough. anyway did you know the silent princess is one of the only raw materials with a cooking effect to not explicitly list that effect in its description
LQG is struck by filial piety after LMY joins the sect. Having her close is a constant reminder of the responsibilities he's been putting off in favor of becoming strong.
He needs to get married.
However, without existing family he has no one to arrange it. Since he's a peak lord he goes to YQY to have the sect deal with it.
But YQY knows this is a very big political opportunity and cannot be squandered (as long as Liu-shidi is sure he doesn't want a love match?) so he assigns it to SQQ.
This opens LQG's eyes to the whole world of what SQQ actually does. He gains an appreciation for the thought that goes into the decisions the sect makes.
It also makes him question whether or not SQQ would have really tried to kill him. SQQ hates him personally, but sees him as a great asset to the sect and SQQ isn't wasteful.
However, the selection process keeps dragging on. No one is good enough for SQQ's standards (LQG shudders to think how exacting he'd be for a sect sibling he actually liked). To add more candidates, LQG goes out and gets a rare fruit that will turn into a baby so he can have a spouse of any gender.
SQQ rails on him for both not doing it sooner and wasting his time, but also for just going out on a super dangerous mission for no reason. Who's he's ranting he makes a throw away comment about how LQG night as well have gone and gotten [plot device miracle cure to fix a bad foundation].
Annoyed at being yelled at, LQG goes and does get that.
Rinse and repeat until sqq goes 'actually you're too valuable, you're marrying me."

I love this, I love all of this, but quick question, does the author know? Like are they aware that their significant other is a serial killer or do they just think that they have a morbid sense of humor? It’d be even funnier if the author had no fucking clue, like how Aurthur Conan Doyle was apparently stupidly gullible, and on top of it they’re a horror or crime novelist. Like the serial killer works at a butcher shop or something so it’s completely normal for them to come home smelling like blood, no murders going on here, no sirey. Just my darling coming back home from a long day at work.
Now fast forward a bit and the author has managed to get their first book published, with loving support from the serial killer who helped them fine tune all the murder scenes, and it’s a big hit. Enough so that a detective with the local police department has noticed some disturbing similarities to several active cases, including details that were never released to the press. Obviously he brings this up to his superior and convinces him that there’s something to the theory, but it’s all circumstantial right now. He stakes out the author’s home and is super convinced that the author is the murderer, but they don’t seem to do anything??? Like they literally are at the house all day, that’s it. Most they do is leave for groceries.
So you get this dynamic of the serial killer mining the author for creative murder schemes, the author being lovingly encouraged by the serial killer, and finally the detective who is just so sure that the author is the killer and that if he sticks it out long enough he’ll FINALLY have proof.
But, like, to become the Peak Lord of Bai Zhan Peak? You have to kill the last one?
That or they hand it too you, say "done now, good luck" and ascend. Leaving you to defend yourself from all comers until it's decided "yeah, they probably ARE the strongest. We accept this."
So like? I can't get out of my head? That "Act Of Loyalty, I Am On Technicality" sort of scene? You know the one. Where an SI-OC, who goes "fuck being a fairy, I wanna be swol. Plus, that's og Qinghua, so this is probably the PIDM timeline. Motherfuckers, I wanna LIVE." And joins the fighty-boy Peak of punching-ness.

Even if Shen-shibo DID kill him! That just means Shen-shibo is now the Peak Lord of Bai Zhan and has to leave Qing Jing! Pick a successor for his old Peak.
There are rules for that exact situation! It's like none of you READ them!
But... and this is important, she would prefer to HAVE a fully fledged War God ON HAND when the Crazy Egg pops. Plus fewer "crimes" to accuse their highly skill and ruthless strategist of. They'll kinda need him. And, you know, INNOCENT? Which is kinda important??? Supposedly.
So, if she remembers correctly, she packs a overstocked "in case of everything" med kit... and waits. Trains like lives depend on it. Just barely gets her sword by the time her Shizun goes into seclusion. Breaks... SO many rules (just, SO MANY. She could legit get kicked out for this. Not to mention DIE, since the QI in there is no joke.) to follow Shen-shibo in to the caves, while that barriers are down.
Did she have to look up the EXACT dimensions of the barriers? Yes. Fly low to avoid being seen and then scale the cliff by hand? Also yes. It's a hole in security. She'll tell them about it after, assuming she doesn't die.
Everyone thinks she's on a night hunt with someone. Learning experience and such. They don't DO coddling and aren't the sort to do "nasty tricks" like faking records. Especially since the punishments are brutal. She's gonna pay and pay HARD for this. Especially if she fails.
Because honestly? If she FAILS? She might as well take the fall for Shen-shibo and tell him to kill her. Because there's no shot, people won't believe she didn't sneak in to dishonorably assassinate her Shizun while he meditated. Which! Incidentally, is one of the FEW ways that DO disqualify a Become Peak Lord kill. Ya gotta fight an aware opponent. Not necessarily sane. Just... aware of you.
So she waits. Tries to meditate and not be crushed by the overwhelming pressure of the caves. Eats a snack. Listens for her Shizun to start to be... distressed? In someway? She's not yet certain how. Just that the book said he dies here. And... there! Noise!
As a Disciple, she's not exactly as fast as a Peak Lord. So she arrives after Shen-shibo. Which is a GOOD thing. Since she would have been slaughtered instantly. Oh fuck. He's Qi deviating. Badly.
She throws herself into the fray. Like a tiny bird, harrying the edges as Shen-shibo takes the brunt of things. Distract her Shizun. Who would normally, never fall for such a tactic... but, well, with his mind in chaos? More mad beast then seasoned battle master? His attention is easily split. And he goes down HARD.
Her med-kit is all but flung into Shen-shibo's hands. He's the adult here, for all she's lived before. For all she has some idea of what to do. He is the scholar, lord of the scholars peak. The medicine will be better put to use under his hands. And? It is.
Wounds close, bodies mostly stabilize. But... her Shizun is slipping away. His Qi is still Deviating. Wobbling like an unsteady top. He needs a shock to force him awake, to force his system to regulate. He needs... to for someone to stop then restart his heart.
He's already not breathing on his own, it's just Shen-shibo. Who can't keep this up much longer.
Anything is worth trying, if the alternative is certain death. She tries. Feels like a chainsaw trying to perform surgery on a grape. But...? Somehow? Dispite the pained wheeze. It works.

And like? It's not as though they don't have a divination peak. It's a simple enough test. "Would that have happened?" They now test for, asking specifically. Oc can literally SEE the moment the exact chain of events clicks together behind his eyes. The rules and memories coming together. He looks at her with... a certain sort of... almost respect. Calls her a foolish child, in a soft voice, reserved for the soon to be dead. Because they both know nothing will change what must be done.

Probably manages, in a random raid, to save Qinghua-shibo. Shortly before his "death by choking via emotionally incompetent ice cube" event. Dude's not looking so hot. Exhausted, bruised, shaking. He betrayed the sect for never respecting him, for the chance at some for of a better life, and... all it got him was abuse. Fear, treachery and death. Cold that never quite leaves his bones.
