Thinking parallels rn. I wonder if the original engagement between Jiang Yanli and Jin Zixuan was meant to be an even closer parallel for Jiang Fengmian and Yu Ziyuan. Both Jin Zixuan and Jiang Fengmian were forced into engagements they did not want with someone they did not like due to pressure from parents and the clans. We know that Jiang Yanli did like Jin Zixuan but we don’t know what Yu Ziyuans feelings were about the engagement.

Therefore I propose that Yu Ziyuan was in love in Jiang Fengmian before they got married. I think it adds on nicely to the themes of breaking abuse cycles and all the parallels between characters and their parents. I also like the idea of Fengmian seeing both himself in Jin Zixuan and Yu Ziyuan in Jiang Yanli, which further pushes him to break the engagement.

#AND BY BREAKING THE ENGAGEMENT HE BREAKS THE CYCLE #LEAVING THOSE TWO TO FIND HAPPINESS #even if that happiness was short lived #and please understand this is not to bash any headcanons #only bringing up an idea i havent seen before and think would be interesting to explore #mdzs
