You know, since their introduction in ocarina of time, the “kokiri,” who each had a dedicated fairy companion, have never made another appearance in the Zelda series. However, in several games since, the great Deku tree has been accompanied by “koroks,” who do not have a dedicated fairy companion.
Obviously, the koroks and kokiri are related, if not the exact same, but it’s the fairies I’m caught on. So the only time we have the kokiri is the one game where Link was raised by the great Deku tree and not, like, his actual family. And it’s a plot point that Link doesn’t have a fairy when all the kokiri do. And per Age of Imprisonment, the koroks predate the kokiri. (For whatever the timeline in LoZ is worth.)
So, you’re the great Deku tree, taking care of your koroks in your magic woods, protecting the spiritual stone of the forest, ignoring the war going on outside, when this dying Hylian woman stumbles through all your magical protections to make her way to your roots. Obviously at least one of the goddesses, if not all four, has a hand in this. She’s carrying a baby, and yeah, Hylia and/or Farore is definitely involved because that baby has the mark of the triforce, has the hero’s spirit. That child has a Destiny.
So of course you promise to protect him. You would anyways, it’s a baby, but the fate of Hyrule is now depending on it too. Which means enemies of Hyrule, including Malice’s vessel, will be looking for this child. And they have spies. Dark creatures that can slip past your wards and defenses. And the child will stand out. Unlike your koroks he’s perfectly visible to any who enter your woods.
You now have two problems: you have to raise this child, you have to hide this child.
Correction, your koroks will have to raise this child (you don’t have hands and Hylian babies take a long time to be independent). This baby is already bigger than some of your koroks. It will be bigger than almost all of them long before it can take care of itself.
And you come up with a solution that will solve both problems
Because, how do you hide a tree? You plant it in a forest.
You coordinate with the fairies, whether directly or with a great fairy. You can’t disguise the child, he needs to grow up and koroks don’t do that. So you’ll disguise the koroks. With the help of the fairies’ magic, one dedicated to each korok, you cast a spell on your forest. The koroks are now kokiri, forest children indistinguishable from Hylian children except for their fairy companions.
So now your children have the size and dexterity to take care of the baby. Now the baby will be indistinguishable from your other children. He’ll grow up without feeling othered and without being tempted to find others like himself. Both problems have been addressed.
Not to say the plan is without flaws.
First, the spell isn’t perfect. Your children are no longer hidden fae while it’s active. They’re visible to all and the invisible is now hidden from them. Not a problem as they are supposed to stay within the woods, anyway. But your children like to explore. And if the children leave the forest, the spell will fail and their natural hiding magic will return, leaving them to “disappear” from both Hylian and the kokiri’s sight. It doesn’t take long for the kokiri to come to the conclusion that leaving the woods means death.
Second, the koroks aren’t very… mature. Some of them are, Saria especially, you’ll put her in charge of the baby, but others… Plus, their memories are notoriously flighty. Again, there are some exceptions (Saria), but it doesn’t take long for the kokiri (and the fairies. The small ones also tend to be flighty) to forget they were ever koroks.
Third, it doesn’t occur to you to assign a fairy to the child. He doesn’t need help to appear Hylian, he is Hylian. Why would he need a fairy? It’s not like your immature, flighty children will see this difference as a reason to ostracize the child (whoops).
So yeah, basically, this is just me coming really late to the party and trying to work out the reason why kokiri have assigned fairies while koroks don’t. Because the only purpose I could figure was that the fairies were necessary for koroks to appear as kokiri and the only reason they needed to be kokiri and not koroks was because they were raising OoT Link.

i saw someone of my fyp post little Korok shrinky dinks they made, and it reminded me that i never posted mine i made earlier this year!! i wanna put some sticky tack on their backs and hide them around lol
as a big fan of Zelda, what do you wish the next installments would do in terms of their races/factions?
Ooooh good question,
I think BotW/ToTK gave majority of their races a pretty solid foundation to build off of.
Rito I think could expand their cultures and designs depending on the regions of Hyrule they inhabit, like if they are more seaside based, it’s a lot more birds inspired by Seagulls, Puffins, Albatrosses, etc, wearing designs that reflect the more airy attire one would wear in beach climates.
Gorons definitely need more going on besides eat rock, sell rocks and mine rocks. I’d love to see more that do things like onsen building like they did in death mountain but in other regions, fortifying structures or foundations for their neighboring regions, or even something silly like Dodongo ranchers.
The Gerudo seem so homebound that every single of them must return to the city when they come of age, and don only Gerudo bejeweled attire. For a faction that seems fashion forward, I want to see some take on designs from the other factions, especially those that decide to stay in the other kingdoms, like imagine Gerudo inspired Zora Armor, or a Gerudo tag teaming mining operations with the Goron, in their own specialized gear, or heck Gerudo hunters doing ground scouting for the Rito, in camouflage like attire, they have the MOST potential.
Zora, I don’t really have any notes on, except, gimme more of the OoT style Zora, since they seem to be one race that changes appearance a lot based on which waters they come from. So gimme them boys back.
Koroks, knowing they are also the Kokiri, can we not have both? Like make the Koroks that roam Hyrule to plant trees and such the little tree lads to protect themselves from the different climates, and then those who stay in the forest can be either or, or even have the Kokiri be like, their own little sages and protectors of the forests.

I've been rooting through my files to find more to post from the last few years of my SM hiatus. These were little acrylic paintings that I gave to family :)
