Luis Caballero (Colombian, 1945-1995), Untitled, 1989. Mixed media on paper, 76 x 56 cm.
Gotta tell you guys something wild in the Chinese fan sphere
So some fanartist drew a “sexy” (read: booby) version of a (cartoon) character who is traditionally very non-sexualised. Fans of the character got mad about it because it’s kind of groundbreaking how that character is written and portrayed and this art totally ignores the entire point of the character. They demanded the art be deleted. In response to that other people said, well what the fanartist did may be distateful but they have every right to draw what they’re into. The two sides fight for days and each starts a harassment campaign and even report their “opponents’” accounts.
So far so typical. But things eventually come to a head and they decide that this will be settled by votes - not through a poll. Through donations to a children’s education charity via each side’s portal. Whoever can get the highest amount of donation wins.
And that is how this charity received over 1 million in donations in three days lol. Oh btw the “freedom of expression” side won by a landslide (960k to 40k)
From now on this is how all petty fandom disputes should be settled.
and i don't necessarily believe any of this i'm just saying words recreationally
Your just saying that because your a sick pervert who gets off to themes and ideas

I do appreciate an academic with a sense of humor.
proud victim of the tumblr accent. it's fading out of public consciousness as the tik tok accent takes precedence; a linguistic evolution that makes the tumblr accent 85% funnier to unsuspecting civilians. it's like releasing a disease on a non-inoculated population. coughing baby versus hydrogen bomb.
once my therapist said I used very uncommon and creative phrases and adjectives and i just did not have the heart to tell that Old Lady From A Foreign Small Town that I was translating tumblr speech into our language. so I was like yeah... must be from the books I read...
like girl we have an army of scholars over at tumblr.com crafting our language it's not just little old me I swear
I once called a colleague's Borzoi a beautiful Gentle Alien, assuming the term had long since become commonplace outside of Tumblr, and discovered when he burst into delighted laughter at the term that it Had Not. I had to explain to him that I'm not a comedy genius, just repeating a niche meme.
Me: "I am getting a good grade in patient, which is normal to want and possible to achive."
My Doctor: "Please stop that."
Me: "I want to get a good grade in therapy, which is normal to want and possible to achieve."
My Therapist: "So, how are your peeps on Tumblr doing?"
the unsuspecting bystander i've just TKO'd with some meme that's embedded itself in my everyday vocabulary: "I like your jokes!"
me: "thanks, i stole them from the internet"
wait i've got it i've solved SPN fandom. the insane factionalism and mind-boggling divergence of interpretations is wholly explained by which parts of this incoherent 15-year trainwreck you enjoy recreationally overthinking
which sounds super obvious on its face, but it really is the most parsimonious explanation for most of the fandom's Observed Behavior and also for my instinctive response to intra-fandom wank. namely that none of these factions are wrong exactly (although many of their partisans are very very wrong on a regular basis <3) and they are all reacting to something that's Present onscreen, but they're all picking a different thing that resonates with them, and this frequently evolves via recreational overthinking into an elaborate niche (re)interpretation of the entire show that more often than not ends up wanting to fistfight the creators in a denny's parking lot.
which is as respectable a hobby as any other way to approach fandom, or at least a nearly inevitable response to the horror of having the CW's Supernatural forcibly rewire your neural pathways, but the wank is neverending because these mutually incompatible readings keep bumping elbows with each other and somebody always eventually decides to make the very existence of some other reading Their Business. and this isn't even a wholly negative thing--the outside reaction is an important check on the tendency for each niche to spiral off into whackadoodle echo-chamber land--but every time people start getting into serious fights about it or trying to frame their reading as morally obligatory it always comes back to. like. we are all getting very different things out of this fuckass show, and the existence of people who don't have a lot of overlap with you on what speaks to them is Basically Fine. maybe try to stick closer to the shared facts of Specific Things That Happened Onscreen if you're trying to engage with them and remember that long chains of implications are an inference that you have to make a case for (and that they may or may not choose to partake in). this doesn't mean you're making shit up but it does mean your take isn't mandatory for anyone with a shred of media literacy.
supernatural (2005-2020) is a series of 327 rorschach inkblots and the girls are fightingggg not only over what the individual ones mean but also what kind of story they can be assembled into

the hottest thing a guy can be is barely conscious on the floor while someone lifts his head up by the hair so that you can see his glazed out eyes and the blood running down his face
the worst I ever felt for sam girls was when the dude finally thought he was having a prayer breakthrough but it turned out to be just. lucifer. your man really is the only guy on the show who never loses faith and thinks maybe he deserves a good thing once in a while and the writers said I’m gonna bring back the pervert who haunts his dreams
modern samgirls have to stop reblogging this this was a peace offering to the 2020-2021 era samgirls who died out. they were all really offputting and badly behaved and got really upset when he suffered at all ever and if you didn’t acknowledge he suffered the most of any person or agreed he was dean’s battered wife you were a heteronormativity enabler or something
