i must say, i am a huge fan of when a book is in the middle of a very exciting plot containing many interesting problems when out of nowhere for a few pages it's like, "hey by the way, real quick, here's a detailed explanation of the city's water filtration system! i'm telling you this for a reason and you should worry about it. anyway! haha okay back to the plot" and you just get to be Scared for a while

I am sorry that your Radiant Star post was taken over by Les Mis fandom; I enjoyed Radiant Star very much and it must have been very frustrating to have your conversation about it sidetracked. However, your initial post did in fact describe Les Misérables, a novel which has been continuously in print for 144 years and which millions of people have read, just as well as it describes Radiant Star, a novel which came out last month and has not had nearly as much time to gain an audience.
(Additionally Hugo was not paid by the word; the philosophy is not remotely irrelevant to the argument of his book; and the failures of infrastructure management which have led to plot-relevant conditions in the sewer (specifically: the opening of a fontis in the lower pavement with quicksand underneath, over which an unladen man could just walk but a man with a burden is likely to drown) are a direct result of the history we are told.)
it's been a very long time since i read les mis, so i'm glad someone has pointed out that Hugo did in fact leave some cookies for Chekov in his infodump. i am however unwilling to reread the entire book or even just the sewer section in order to refresh my memory with regards to the narrator specifically informing the reader that he was loading Chekov's Gun. i don't remember coming out of the sewers feeling Scared, but it's been twenty years, so i will take your word for it if you tell me he did that, too.

lately i've been motivating myself to do things by repeating the mantra we feel alive by doing things and i think it has fixed a big part of my brain.
i tell myself we feel alive by doing things and then i groan and do the thing. and lo and behold i do in fact feel alive. even if i don't like the particular thing i am doing at all.
and because i have attributed the feeling—literally just alive, the most basic possible first building block of any other iota of potential—directly, clearly, and out loud, over and over and over again—to the simple act of doing things, something, anything at all, and then reinforced with, again, the feeling of alive, every single time— i seem to have rewired my brain in a very pavlovian way.

1. How do you lose a Giraffe? She apparently scaled a cliff that served as part of the enclosure (which the other giraffes in the herd had shown no interest in climbing.)
2. Well it should be easier to find her, she's a whole ass giraffe? Yeah, you'd think, but Texas ranches are fuckin huge. The man has apparently hired a helicopter and several drones to aide the search, but no luck yet. She's been seen on some game cameras on the nearby ranches though. But she's sneaky.
3. Why does a random guy in Texas have a herd of giraffes? Because it's Texas and we have basically no exotic animal regulations. No really. If you have enough land out in the hill country, you can just own stuff. It's fuckin nuts.
What's sending me is the "described as having rounded ears", as if to distinguish her from other stray giraffes that concerned neighbours might encounter.
I mean given Texas apparently has no exotic animal regulation the fact you might encounter another stray giraffe is low, but not zero.

Hilarious to me that a person can have “grab my boner” as their username and Tumblr is like, “yeah! that’s great!” But a little bit of tummy offends their delicate sensibilities. Truly, the most webbed site of all time.
It occurs to me that writing my whole Tiger Balm As An Anxiety Coping Mechanism into Contend With Me means that I’ve given away my go-to subtle/public method. I was Tiger-Balming like a fiend while I was speaking on the panel tonight (because even though I taught in college auditoriums and presented at conferences for years, a small bookstore gathering spiked my anxiety. Why.). One of the booksellers was like, “oh wow, I love the way you smell” and in my head I was like thanks, it’s one of the few ways to deal with my brain trying to chew its way out of my skull except once this new book comes out it doesn’t matter if that stays an inside thought because if they’ve read the book they’ll already KNOW.
Anyway. If you came tonight it was nice to meet you and sorry for the menthol and camphor smells. It prevented me from passing out.
Also!! Look at this skirt that someone was wearing when they came through the signing line. I love it. I want one. I’m not sure if owning such a skirt would fix my anxiety, but it’s worth trying, I think.
