Hello! I mostly go by Shadow, but I will accept anything based off of my username (which I came up with when I was 14, in case its vibes were not obvious enough)!
I have been writing since 2017 and I want to finally begin posting some of it, so I thought I'd make this for ease of organizing. I will add things as I write them. I will also put stuff for my Rooks, since I talk a lot about them.

And - alright, “Kid” wasn’t the right word, even though that is what Varric kept calling her. “Kid” or “Rook,” which wasn’t much better. But Harding was pretty sure they were around the same age so -
Rook. Rook was angry.
She didn’t show it easily. Mages right? She had that mask - like the Inquisitor, and Vivienne, and Solas and - well, maybe not Dorian. Dorian leaned on his emotions and twisted them up and got all sarcastic about it, which was another kind of mask but not quite the same - but all the other Mages Harding had worked with over the years just - shut it off sometimes. It was kind of scary and kind of impressive and the one time she tried to broach the topic with Varric he said something about pots and kettles and looking in a mirror and wasn’t that ridiculous, Harding was fine - but he reassured her that he was working on getting through to Rook - trying to help her get past whatever nonsense had gotten her kicked out of Nevarra.
So Harding decided to keep an eye on her and just - be nice to her. Set a good example or something. Make a friend.
But then, there was a moment - after she had done something with a Demon keeping them out of the old ruins they were targeting, something that dropped the temperature and took the light out of her eyes and she said ‘I’m fine’ in a voice that said she absolutely was not and Harding barely knew the woman, but after - well, Harding had never seen anyone so angry, watching her tear apart the Rage Demons who hit them in the antechamber with an increasingly frantic efficiency.
Varric was hanging back and looking nervous (and he never looked nervous, not like this,) and Harding knew she should do the same. She was very capable of shooting targets close up, but that kind of negated the whole point of using a bow in the first place and the likelihood of her getting caught in friendly-ish fire with the way magic was being flung around felt uncomfortably high and there were just - so many demons.
But watching Rook fight - It was hard to tell the difference between her and the Demons. From what she understood about such things, Harding suspected the Demons might be there because of Rook and she really didn’t want to have to put down their new spirit expert because she got possessed. Seeing an opening, Harding worked her way closer until she and the mage were back to back in the midst of the magical storm.
“You should leave,” Rook had shouted, determined and terse and resigned and yeah - that wasn’t going to happen.
“And miss all the fun?” Harding told her. “Besides, not looking to leave anyone behind," she said pointedly.
And maybe it helped - the proximity. The reminder that no one had to go it alone. Though Harding was pretty sure it was wiping the floor with the Rage Demons that exorcised whatever Rook was working through. It sure improved Harding’s mood, especially when they found the artifact that had been hunting without any other difficulties.
It was probably her imagination that Rook seemed friendly, after. Calmer too.
Lifetimes later - or so it seemed - Harding would remember this moment as she stood in a maelstrom, drowning in the combined fury of all the broken dreams of her people, simultaneously triumphant and horrified at the extent of the anger trying to consume her, as she watched Rook walk into a Titan’s wrath - into Harding’s wrath - just to make sure she wasn’t alone with her rage.
And - huh. Apparently, it did help. Proximity. The reminder that no one had to go it alone. That someone had your back through the worst of storms. And maybe Varric had been onto something, back in the day, about Harding and anger and this didn’t fix anything, but having a friend there helped her find the other side of it. Calmer and in control and ready to continue the fight her way. With her friends.
Thank you @datvcompanionweeks for hosting. Life is life-ing pretty hard right now, but glad I got this done for my favorite scout. 💕
unfortunately i dont think its queerbaiting if the creator is just so terminally heterosexual that they never remotely considered the same gender relationship their show is centered around could be read as romantic. it is deeply painful however.
By definition you can't accidentally queerbait. Queerbaiting is specifically using a same sex pair from the show to market the show to queer audiences with no intention of ever following through on a romantic relationship.
There is officially licensed Destiel merch signed off on by Kripke. Teen Wolf had a commercial with the actors for Derek and Stiles draped over each other talking about being "on a ship." Both shows actively used scenes between them as marketing while actively mocking fans for wanting them together. Sherlock has multiple characters refer to Johnlock as a couple, including characters we're supposed to believe are never wrong about human behavior and pushed those scenes in marketing. Then they acted insulted when fans saw them as a couple.
That's queerbaiting.
Done on accident it would just be queer subtext. Done because they had no other choice due to censorship is queer coding.
The specific meaning of the word is really starting to get lost and it's a pretty important one to keep accurate. It describes a very specific phenomenon that was done repeatedly and maliciously for decades and is meant to examine that specifically.
Doing it on accident sucks, but it isn't a tactic of capitalism intentionally intended to suppress queer representation while making money from queer fans.
I know … that somehow, all of this mess
Is just my attempt to know
The worth of my life
Made of precious metals, precious metals
Precious metals inside

tagging ppl for this one bc tumblr decided to hide yesterday's Harding piece and I spent FAR too many hours sorting through layers for it to do the same here
I was making coffee and I heard a "mpeep" behind me so I turn around an on my kitchen floor sits Kotelet, the tiny stray that visits me every day, and to her side sits a big fat house spider, you know the one that gets stuck in your bath.
So I go "Hey ehh, you brought a buddy?" and she looks down at the spider and swallows it in one go -legs and everything- and looks back at me with these cute big eyes

Fun fact! one of Strelka's puppies was named Pushinka and given to JFK as a gift to help ease Cold War tensions. Pushinka later had puppies of her own and her descendants are still living as of 2024.
Yup. AI watermark. Traces back to this Facebook page which posts nothing except for AI images of manul/Pallas cats (plus a couple of videos of domestic cats). The original post is here.
Here are some real images of this animal. They're not as dramatic, but they are the real thing.
Our summer adventure with the kids is coming to an end, and before I return to my usual painting routine, I want to share a few more pieces from my series of quick summer studies.
This little round painting is one of them. A glowing sunset, my favorite decorative clouds, and a completely imaginary landscape. It was painted over two days, but the actual painting time was only about two hours, the rest was simply waiting for the acrylic layers to dry.At the moment we’re still in Turkey, and the last couple of days have been… memorable. Our airline lost our suitcase, so for two days the four of us had nothing but what we were wearing. We bought the essentials for a few days, and thankfully the suitcase has finally been found. If everything goes as planned, it should be delivered to us this evening. It reminded me of something important: when life refuses to follow your plans, try not to spend your energy fighting reality. Instead, ask yourself, “What can I do right now to improve the situation?” Focus on the next step instead of the frustration. Negative emotions rarely solve problems, but calm actions often do.
Anyway… I’m looking forward to being back in the studio very soon.

Today I want to show you a very special painting. This place is part of my childhood and some of my happiest memories. I painted it after a trip to Russia in 2017. It feels like a lifetime ago. My oldest son had just turned one, and my husband and I traveled to visit my parents. My parents have a big off-road vehicle, and they love exploring places where ordinary cars simply can’t go-deep forests, marshes, hidden lakes, and quiet rivers. They took us on many adventures, and this was one of those places. We spent the day fishing there and even caught a few large northern pike. This landscape is near the village of Kholuy in the Ivanovo region of Russia.Although I painted it years ago, it isn’t for sale. It is the only painting that was permanently damaged during the catastrophic flood that hit my gallery in 2021, After days of heavy rain in Belgium and Germany, a dam had to be opened overnight to prevent an even greater disaster. Nobody had time to prepare. During the night, the water rushed into the building. The flood reached almost 2.5 meters (over 8 feet) high, nearly touching the ceiling. My paintings floated in muddy water for many hours.Afterward, I washed and disinfected every painting by hand. Many survived surprisingly well, although several wooden stretcher bars warped as they dried. This painting was less fortunate. It must have fallen in just the wrong way, and part of the thick acrylic paint layer detached from the canvas. It now has a small but visible scar, and I still don’t know the best way to restore it.So it hangs in my home instead.People often ask whether it’s okay to touch my textured paintings. I always say yes you can gently touch them with your fingers or even wipe them with a damp cloth if needed. After seeing paintings survive a flood, floating in dirty water for hours, it’s hard for me to imagine that even thousands of curious fingers could do more damage than that one night did.
Sometimes a painting carries not only the memory of the place it depicts, but also the memory of everything it has survived.
