Dressmaking in Paris, 1907.
I would like to point out what these women are wearing themselves. Because "what did WORKING women wear?!" is a refrain I hear a lot re: recreations of even the most basic historical clothing that has any visual interest at all
the lady on the far right has a brooch and a necklace! and some insertion lace on her blouse! the center-right lady in the plaid shirtwaist seems to be wearing a decorative necktie of some sort! all of them have sleeve puffs that are maybe a few years out of date, but not by much!
and these are working seamstresses! literally At Work!
working-class people have always loved beauty just as much as the rich. and found ways to incorporate it into their lives
Virginia Postrel in her book THE SUBSTANCE OF STYLE specifically points out that ornamentation is always possible no matter how limited your resources. You might not have quite enough food, but you can still put your hair in a braid more easily than you can buy a milk cow for your family. You might have to whittle your spoons yourself from a branch foraged in the wood, but you can still carve a knotwork pattern into the handle more easily than you can learn the craft of forging metal.
A thirst for beauty isn't something limited to the rich and knowledgeable. It's something that makes us human, and I worry that people who can't accept that working class or disadvantaged people from history might have appreciated and prioritised beauty and style in their lives are also failing to accept that these people were fully human. I mean think for just a moment where this trope of the filth encrusted medieval peasant came from - it wasn't from people who respected their dignity and personhood.
Cleanliness, style, and ornament are all ways that as humans we express our dignity, and attributing filth and squalor to people is a pretty common way to deny their dignity.
Yes. Of course their lives contained beauty.
"Cratchit's wife, dressed out but poorly in a twice-turned gown, but brave in ribbons which are cheap and make a goodly show for sixpence" - A Christmas Carol
This woman literally took her gown apart, turned it inside-out, and remade it into a more modern style. TWICE. And then managed to dress it up with some silk ribbons.
MSNBC covered this story yesterday. Unfuckingbelievable

love david and goliath being like one of the main bible stories for kids. like yeah you might be small but with god on your side you can kill someone with a rock
Oh so when golden boy David does it, he’s heroic and a man after God’s own heart, but when I, CAIN-
this is basically a short horror film

I take immense schadenfreude in Elon Musk spending $25 million to try to influence an election in Wisconsin only for the candidate he was backing to lose by a larger margin than was predicted before Musk got into the race. Like how tf do you dump that much money into a state supreme court election and get not only nothing out of it but LESS than nothing. That's a truly impressive level of failure. I'm watching Elon become the most hated man in America like the Sickos yes hahaha yes comic
The latest news out of DC is that everyone in the federal government, up to and including all the MAGA ghouls cannot fucking stand Elon Musk
lol. lmao, even
I get that being frozen for 100 years is a tough thing to go through but honestly Aang should have used it for comedy more

Bumi, the second they arrive: welcome to weed city
Sokka: what the fuck
can we get this post to 420,000 notes
Why Wayne got socks in the jacuzzi

i think the saddest part of sailor moon, other than them dying over and over, is usagi and naru's friendship fizzling out by the end of the series
At the very least Stars confirms that Usagi and Naru still hang out occasionally!
But yeah, it is sad that they grew apart. I also think it's very realistic. In many ways Sailor Moon is Usagi's coming of age story, and I think everyone above a certain age can relate to what happened to Usagi and Naru.
A lot of friendships do just do fizzle out. There's no big blowout, you still care about and think fondly of each other, but you've just drifted apart. Especially when you're a teenager, you go through so many changes. You make new friends, develop your own beliefs, maybe even move far away for college. Unless you're really really committed to maintaining a friendship, it's very easy for you to slowly drift apart and suddenly you haven't spoken to your childhood best friend in years.
I think Naru and Usagi will always cherish each other and as adults they probably talk and hang out every now and then (I can absolutely see Neo-Queen Serenity sneaking out for some normal girl time with Naru), but yeah, they're just not best friends anymore. And it's sad because we can all relate to it, but that's life.
What's even sadder is that it seems that if Naru was in on Usagi being Sailor Moon or was a Sailor Guardian herself, then she would've stayed close to her. But because she's a normie, she just doesn't have relevance in the plot. Usagi's new life as a Sailor Guardian basically killed her close ties with her civilian friends, something Minako realized about herself by the end of Codename: Sailor V. But unlike Minako, Usagi doesn't seem to notice. Naru even says in her internal dialogue in the Black Moon arc that she figured out that Usagi was a part of a bigger and greater world than hers, but she just wanted to able to help her (which is why it's so sad that out of all the civilians in that arc who find out the Sailor Guardians' secret, it's Asanuma instead of her). I think Wakaba from Revolutionary Girl Utena goes through something similar and is a deconstruction of the trope where the normie friend of the protagonist is cast aside when they find new "special" plot important friends. But at the end of the series, instead of reconnecting with Utena (who disappeared), she finds new friends.

When Donald Trump reentered office, one of his first calls to action was to end several DEI initiatives in the federal government.
'This won't work, this isn't widespread, nobody knows, we're in a bubble, blah blah blah' my mom, a 64 year old lady with no social media whose first language is spanish, told me about this before tumblr did, and said we are going to participate.
I've seen flyers for this in real life. Do it.
Keep your messaging simple:
“Trump fired everyone in charge of airplane safety, and a week later planes started crashing into each other.”
That’s it. That’s the messaging. Don’t get bogged down disputing Trump’s false claims. Just blame him, in short and repeatable sentences.
Trump removed bird safety regulations in his first term and now bird flu is killing so many laying hens that eggs are $5 a carton
Trump removed food safety standards his first term and now we have recalls every few weeks
Trump cut the subsidies for the solar farms under construction so now electricity costs more
Trump disbanded the pandemic response team and we now we have bird flu and tuberculosis outbreaks
