Little appreciated detail of Light and Soichiro in real time having that parent-child shift where they're now both adults, and the change in dynamic there that results in the child really seeing their parent as a complicated person beyond just Mom or Dad, and the child being able to assert themselves making the parent aware of unexplored facets of the child.
Except Light didn't get the normal experience. He went from "my father is my role model" to "holy shit, my father has no self-preservation instinct," in a few months flat. By arc 2, he is so skilled at combatting his father's self-sacrificing tendencies that it proves this was a mainstay.
OP you're right and I don't know how people miss that either because I'm pretty sure Soichiro's spiral actually started when he had to pretend to shoot his son in the fucking face. Like how does a decent man and proud father sleep after that, with Light's pleas for his life probably ringing in his ears and Light's genuine, innocent terror flashing before his eyes every time he closes them in a dark room? How does he live with himself when the son who would have every right to fucking disown him for that absolute insanity is still somehow smiling at him with love and pride and admiration every day they see each other in the office? Still listening to him, still respecting him, still working with him - still doesn't flinch when Soichiro leans over his shoulder even though he'd have every justification to?
I suspect Light's very obvious forgiveness and moving past that whole thing actually made Soichiro feel way worse about it, and I don't think Light meant to do that fwiw. I think he genuinely did forgive his dad or at least seriously compartmentalised it if on some level he didn't, and didn't consider that that might, in certain regards, not actually help.

There's a timeline where Mello kidnapped Soichiro instead of Sayu, and I kind of want to see that. It would be a trainwreck for everyone involved.
Thinking about this again and I realized. Light had the Director commit suicide. He wouldn't write his father's name, but if placed in a situation like this, Soichiro would not hesitate to sacrifice himself.
If Mello kidnapped Soichiro, he might genuinely think Soichiro is under the control of Kira. Keeping him alive is a Odyssean task, the results of which could shape the entire investigation.
Scenario A: Soichiro is successful. This narrows the suspects to the task force who kept the kidnapping on the down-low. Light is fucked over through no fault of his own. (This could be prevented if Light, aware since Yotsuba that his father is Like That, makes it public specifically to cover his own ass. Either the kidnappings get increasingly ridiculous, or the mafia doesn't get the notebook.)
Scenario B: Soichiro is unsuccessful. The investigation goes back to the first time he had a heart attack, when L questioned was it possible Kira tried to kill him and failed. This does immeasurable damage to the collective understanding of the Death Note. Light is thriving.
