Salty Polyamory

So, this may be kinda of dumb, since sex, and sexuality, and anything out of the norm isn’t really “cool” with Tumblr right now, but I think it’d be kind of cool to get to know other polyam people here on Tumblr, period. So if you still have an pretty active blog, are polyamorous, practice any form of ETHICAL non-monogamy, or relationship anarchy and want to start a little polyam community, love and/or reblog this so we can all follow and communicate with one another.

After being in a documentary on polyamory, I found a podcast where our interviewer talked briefly about the concept of compersion, and how because it was an “invented” word, it can’t be real. Honestly, left me feeling gross. I left the following comment, but figured I’d drop it on here as well. The word “compersion” comes from French, and was chosen due to its “chosen family” nature. While we had a word for “happy because others suffer” - schadenfreude, “sad because others suffer” - empathy, and “sad because others are happy” - jealousy/envy, there was no word for “happy because others are happy” - so in the 1970s/80s, the word compersion came around, because being happy because others are happy is a feeling we *should* have a word for.   Also, even if we *did* have to invent a word for it, it doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist, or that it’s a bad thing.  Since the invention of “compersion” as a word, “dwarf planet,” “heteronormativity,” and “neurodiversity” also came along, describing something that already existed.  Even the word “podcast” only came only more recently than the word “compersion” did.

I don’t understand the rules of The Bachelor(ette) world. When does the rule change from “it’s time to go on dates with a bunch of different people” to “how could he have kissed *her* 2 days after he kissed *me?” Drama sells, and monogamous expectations cause a whole lotta drama, and when the entire premise of the show is literally the opposite of monogamous dating I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY MONOGAMOUS PEOPLE ARE WATCHING THIS. Are you trying to live vicariously in a world where the restrictive rules of monogamy don’t apply? Are you routing for true monogamous love to win out after all? Are you watching it because you are hoping a cat-fight will break out? Are you so dazzled by the attractive people on screen that you aren’t registering what is actually happening? WHY HAS YOUR BRAIN NOT EXPLODED FROM ALL THIS COGNITIVE DISSONANCE?! And of course, the biggest fans of these shows are married women who you KNOW used to be partiers, but are now doing everything they can to project the image of the perfect wife and mother. Don’t lie to me, you are longing for your hoe days. You just can’t admit it because monogamous culture won’t let you, and because you can’t face the fact that your husband probably misses being a bit of a hoe too.
