Why did you give the last of your food to that poorly disguised mimic? You were finally at peace with letting go, but now this odd thing wonāt leave you alone and is even turning itself into various items in an attempt to aid you.
The mimic is a young one, and you knew that from the moment you laid eyes on it. It was disguised as a crate, but the angles werenāt quite right. The corners were a little lopsided, and if you looked hard enough you could make out the creatureās mouth.
A sigh escapes you as you toss over the last of your rations, not even bothering to stand up as you do so. Whatās the point? You think. Iāve been trapped in this cave for days, nobody is looking for me, and the monsters are closing in. Why should I bother even trying? I could just fall asleep now, and let this little mimic eat me too.
The thing is⦠it doesnāt. It eats your rations, but when you lay down and try to sleep, it doesnāt attack. You do hear it move closer, but you donāt open your eyes until you feel something nudge your hand. As you barely open your eyes, you can see that the mimic has morphed itself into a crude sword. You canāt help but chuckle.
āYouāre cute, but I donāt have anything left to give you.ā You donāt have anything left to give for yourself either, but you donāt say so.
The mimic doesnāt seem to take no for an answer. It becomes a dagger, then an axe, then a staff, as though itās trying to determine what your preffered weapon is.
āListen, I donāt know what youāre trying to do, but itās not working. Iām not going to pick you up and take you into some other part of this stupid cave system. Nice try, though.ā
You turn away from it and attempt to sleep again. As you do so, you find yourself shivering. You really wish, as you doze off, that you had a blanket.
When you wake, much later, youāre surprised to find yourself covered with the warmest blanket youāve ever had. You quickly sit up, eagerly hoping that someone had cone for you, but the cave is empty. When you look at the blanket, you notice the imperfect edges and the janky seam across the middle.
āā¦why havenāt you eaten me yet?ā You ask the little mimic thatās now laying on top of you. āWhatās wrong with you?ā
The mimic, still in the form of the blanket, slithers off of you, but it does not respond. Instead, it begins taking the form of weapons again. When it turns into a crooked staff, you reach out, despite yourself. Your fingers wrap around it and you use it to haul your aching, injured body to your feet. āI guess there are probably nicer places to die.ā
You know you wonāt get far. And you donāt. Especially not without light. The mimic doesnāt seem too bothered, though. When you collapse again, it scuttles off. Perhaps this was simply where it wanted you to take it. Perhaps now you can finally succumb to your exhaustion.
Then, a few minutes later, a misshapen clay cup bumps against your hand. Itās full of water, and thereās a crack in the middle like a jagged mouth. You pick up the cup and you drink, telling yourself itās only out of desperation. When you set the cup down, that little cracked mouth seems to smile.
This goes on for what feels like days. The mimic helps you limp along through the tunnels, transforming into whatever you may need at any given time. Every time you fall asleep, you expect not to wake up. Yet, you do, usually with a mimic blanket wrapped around you. It brings you food and water when you can.
The biggest surprise comes when one morning, you find youāre pleased to have survived another night. Youāre happy to have the mimic keeping you warm. Itās a new feeling, and a confusing one, but itās not unpleasant.
The other monsters that you know are down here seem to leave you alone for the most part. You arenāt sure why. It crosses your mind that maybe it has something to do with the mimic. Then again, maybe theyāre just waiting for you to die. Death is gradually beginning to sound less and less appealing.
The day you catch a glimpse of sunlight down a long and narrow tunnel is the first day you finally feel like your old self again. Your pace quickens, and you donāt need to lean on the mimicās staff form quite so much. The illusion shatters when you reach the lightās source. A small gap, high above. You curl up on the floor and cry. When you finally have the strength to look up again, your mimic has become a ladder.
Getting up is hard, in your state. Climbing, even more so. But the ladder is the biggest and best transformation the mimic has done so far, and if it wants you to get out, then you canāt let it down.
You feel it push up under you when you reach the gap. It helps you squeeze through, and then⦠freedom. Fresh air, and sunlight. You lay on your back on the stone, and you pass out.
You wake up at sunset, with a blanket draoed over you. A blanket with a jagged seam down the middle.
A mark on your forehead identifies the god you must worship to stay alive, usually by joining its local church or temple. Your mark is unknown, meaning an old, forgotten god sponsored you. To survive, you must either find an old temple to worship at, or do the arduous task of building a new one
Nobody in your small coastal village has ever seen the Godmark that you were born with. Itās a dark russet sequence of criss-crossing lines, with a vertical arrowhead on the left and a circle on the right, just over where your brow meets your temple. Some of the traders who come down from the mountain say it looks like one of the scripts used in the hinterlands, but not a language that any of them recognize.
āIf sheās got the temperament for it, she should try her luck inland,ā they advise. āNo point her starting a temple here if sheād find her people elsewhere, with a little searching.ā
At first, your parents are reluctant to send you away. Though youāre well-behaved and diligent in your chores, youāre a sickly child with no God to worship. And besides, youāve always been the dreamy typeāinclined to lose track of time watching the path of rain droplets chasing down the window, or the fronds of an anemone as it sways in a rock pool.
Instead, they send you to the temple of the Storm to learn all youāll need for your own God. You are happy there, for a time: making up beds and serving food to the castaways who pass through, keeping vigil at the lighthouse, burning incense and praying with the loyal widows and orphans of the drowned.
One such widow, an old, old lady, touches the mark on your forehead. āI recognise those letters. We wrote this way in the town where I grew up, way off past the mountains.ā
Your heartbeat quickens. āWhat does it say!?ā
She squints, eyes engulfed by wrinkles and hidden behind smudged glass. āA⦠Ar⦠Oh, I canāt remember how to speak it. I left before I learnt my letters properly. There was a war, you know. But I remember,ā she says, mistily, āthe most beautiful pink and white flowers used to grow, on the borders of the wheat fieldsā¦ā
You try to ask more questions, but remembering the war distresses her, and so you speak of other things. When sheās drifted off to sleep, you get to your feet, go home and tell your parents: you are leaving in search of your God.
Temples are built for gods. Knowing this a farmer builds a small temple to see what kind of god turns up.
Arepo built a temple in his field, a humble thing, some stones stacked up to make a cairn, and two days later a god moved in.
āHope youāre a harvest god,ā Arepo said, and set up an altar and burnt two stalks of wheat. āItād be nice, you know.ā He looked down at the ash smeared on the stone, the rocks all laid askew, and coughed and scratched his head. āI know itās not much,ā he said, his straw hat in his hands. āBut - Iāll do what I can. Itād be nice to think thereās a god looking after me.ā
The next day he left a pair of figs, the day after that he spent ten minutes of his morning seated by the temple in prayer. On the third day, the god spoke up.
āYou should go to a temple in the city,ā the god said. Its voice was like the rustling of the wheat, like the squeaks of fieldmice running through the grass. āA real temple. A good one. Get some real gods to bless you. Iām no one much myself, but I might be able to put in a good word?ā It plucked a leaf from a tree and sighed. āI mean, not to be rude. I like this temple. Itās cozy enough. The worshipās been nice. But you canāt honestly believe that any of this is going to bring you anything.ā
āThis is more than I was expecting when I built it,ā Arepo said, laying down his scythe and lowering himself to the ground. āTell me, what sort of god are you anyway?ā
āIām of the fallen leaves,ā it said. āThe worms that churn beneath the earth. The boundary of forest and of field. The first hint of frost before the first snow falls. The skin of an apple as it yields beneath your teeth. Iām a god of a dozen different nothings, scraps that lead to rot, momentary glimpses. A change in the air, and then itās gone.ā
The god heaved another sigh. āThereās no point in worship in that, not like War, or the Harvest, or the Storm. Save your prayers for the things beyond your control, good farmer. Youāre so tiny in the world. So vulnerable. Best to pray to a greater thing than me.ā
Arepo plucked a stalk of wheat and flattened it between his teeth. āI like this sort of worship fine,ā he said. āSo if you donāt mind, I think Iāll continue.ā
āDo what you will,ā said the god, and withdrew deeper into the stones. āBut donāt say I never warned you otherwise.ā
Arepo would say a prayer before the morningās work, and he and the god contemplated the trees in silence. Days passed like that, and weeks, and then the Storm rolled in, black and bold and blustering. It flooded Arepoās fields, shook the tiles from his roof, smote his olive tree and set it to cinder. The next day, Arepo and his sons walked among the wheat, salvaging what they could. The little temple had been strewn across the field, and so when the work was done for the day, Arepo gathered the stones and pieced them back together.
āUseless work,ā the god whispered, but came creeping back inside the temple regardless. āThere wasnāt a thing I could do to spare you this.ā
āWeāll be fine,ā Arepo said. āThe stormās blown over. Weāll rebuild. Donāt have much of an offering for today,ā he said, and laid down some ruined wheat, ābut I think Iāll shore up this thingās foundations tomorrow, how about that?āĀ
The god rattled around in the temple and sighed.
A year passed, and then another. The temple had layered walls of stones, a roof of woven twigs. Arepoās neighbors chuckled as they passed it. Some of their children left fruit and flowers. And then the Harvest failed, the gods withdrew their bounty. In Arepoās field the wheat sprouted thin and brittle. People wailed and tore their robes, slaughtered lambs and spilled their blood, looked upon the ground with haunted eyes and went to bed hungry. Arepo came and sat by the temple, the flowers wilted now, the fruit shriveled nubs, Arepoās ribs showing through his chest, his hands still shaking, and murmured out a prayer.Ā
āThere is nothing here for you,ā said the god, hudding in the dark. āThere is nothing I can do. There is nothing to be done.ā It shivered, and spat out its words. āWhat is this temple but another burden to you?ā
āWe -ā Arepo said, and his voice wavered. āSo itās a lean year,ā he said. āWeāve gone through this before, weāll get through this again. So weāre hungry,ā he said. āWeāve still got each other, donāt we? And a lot of people prayed to other gods, but it didnāt protect them from this. No,ā he said, and shook his head, and laid down some shriveled weeds on the altar. āNo, I think I like our arrangement fine.ā
āThere will come worse,ā said the god, from the hollows of the stone. āAnd there will be nothing I can do to save you.ā
The years passed. Arepo rested a wrinkled hand upon the temple of stone and some days spent an hour there, lost in contemplation with the god.
And one fateful day, from across the wine-dark seas, came War.
Arepo came stumbling to his temple now, his hand pressed against his gut, anointing the holy site with his blood. Behind him, his wheat fields burned, and the bones burned black in them. He came crawling on his knees to a temple of hewed stone, and the god rushed out to meet him.
āI could not save them,ā said the god, its voice a low wail. āI am sorry. I am sorry. I am so so sorry.ā The leaves fell burning from the trees, a soft slow rain of ash. āI have done nothing! All these years, and I have done nothing for you!ā
āShush,ā Arepo said, tasting his own blood, his vision blurring. He propped himself up against the temple, forehead pressed against the stone in prayer. āTell me,ā he mumbled. āTell me again. What sort of god are you?ā
āI -ā said the god, and reached out, cradling Arepoās head, and closed its eyes and spoke.
āIām of the fallen leaves,ā it said, and conjured up the image of them. āThe worms that churn beneath the earth. The boundary of forest and of field. The first hint of frost before the first snow falls. The skin of an apple as it yields beneath your teeth.ā Arepoās lips parted in a smile.
āI am the god of a dozen different nothings,ā it said. āThe petals in bloom that lead to rot, the momentary glimpses. A change in the air -ā Its voice broke, and it wept. āBefore itās gone.ā
āBeautiful,ā Arepo said, his blood staining the stones, seeping into the earth. āAll of them. They were all so beautiful.ā
And as the fields burned and the smoke blotted out the sun, as men were trodden in the press and bloody War raged on, as the heavens let loose their wrath upon the earth, Arepo the sower lay down in his humble temple, his head sheltered by the stones, and returned home to his god.
Sora found the temple with the bones within it, the roof falling in upon them.
āOh, poor god,ā she said, āWith no-one to bury your last priest.ā Then she paused, because she was from far away. āOr is this how the dead are honored here?ā The god roused from its contemplation.
āHis name was Arepo,ā it said,Ā āHe was a sower.ā
Sora startled, a little, because she had never before heard the voice of a god. āHow can I honor him?ā She asked.
āBury him,ā the god said, āBeneath my altar.ā
āAll right,ā Sora said, and went to fetch her shovel.
āWait,ā the god said when she got back and began collecting the bones from among the broken twigs and fallen leaves. She laid them out on a roll of undyed wool, the only cloth she had. āWait,ā the god said, āI cannot do anything for you. I am not a god of anything useful.ā
Sora sat back on her heels and looked at the altar to listen to the god.
āWhen the Storm came and destroyed his wheat, I could not save it,ā the god said, āWhen the Harvest failed and he was hungry, I could not feed him. When War came,ā the godās voice faltered. āWhen War came, I could not protect him. He came bleeding from the battle to die in my arms.ā Sora looked down again at the bones.
āI think you are the god of something very useful,ā she said.
āWhat?ā the god asked.
Sora carefully lifted the skull onto the cloth. āYou are the god of Arepo.ā
Generations passed. The village recovered from its tragediesāhomes rebuilt, gardens re-planted, wounds healed. The old man who once lived on the hill and spoke to stone and rubble had long since been forgotten, but the temple stood in his name. Most believed it to be empty, as the god who resided there long ago had fallen silent. Yet, any who passed the decaying shrine felt an ache in their hearts, as though mourning for a lost friend. The cold that seeped from the temple entrance laid their spirits low, and warded off any potential visitors, save for the rare and especially oblivious children who would leave tiny clusters of pink and white flowers that they picked from the surrounding meadow.
The god sat in his peaceful home, staring out at the distant road, to pedestrians, workhorses, and carriages, raining leaves that swirled around bustling feet. How long had it been? The world had progressed without him, for he knew there was no help to be given. The world must be a cruel place, that even the useful gods have abandoned, if farms can flood, harvests can run barren, and homes can burn, he thought.
He had come to understand that humans are senseless creatures, who would pray to a god that cannot grant wishes or bless upon them good fortune. Who would maintain a temple and bring offerings with nothing in return. Who would share their company and meditate with such a fruitless deity. Who would bury a stranger without the hope for profit. What bizarre, futile kindness they had wasted on him. What wonderful, foolish, virtuous, hopeless creatures, humans were.
So he painted the sunset with yellow leaves, enticed the worms to dance in their soil, flourished the boundary between forest and field with blossoms and berries, christened the air with a biting cold before winter came, ripened the apples with crisp, red freckles to break under sinking teeth, and a dozen other nothings, in memory of the man who once praised the godās work on his dying breath.
āHello, God of Every Humble Beauty in the World,ā called a familiar voice.
The squinting corners of the godās eyes wept down onto curled lips. āArepo,ā he whispered, for his voice was hoarse from its hundred-year mutism.
āI am the god of devotion, of small kindnesses, of unbreakable bonds. I am the god of selfless, unconditional love, of everlasting friendships, and trust,ā Arepo avowed, soothing the other with every word.
āThatās wonderful, Arepo,ā he responded between tears, āIām so happy for youāsuch a powerful figure will certainly need a grand temple. Will you leave to the city to gather more worshippers? Youāll be adored by all.ā
āNo,ā Arepo smiled.
āFarther than that, to the capitol, then? Thank you for visiting here before your departure.ā
āNo, I will not go there, either,ā Arepo shook his head and chuckled.
āFarther still? What ambitious goals, you must have. There is no doubt in my mind that you will succeed, though,ā the elder god continued.
āActually,ā interrupted Arepo, āIād like to stay here, if youāll have me.ā
The other god was struck speechless. āā¦. Why would you want to live here?ā
āI am the god of unbreakable bonds and everlasting friendships. And you are the god of Arepo.ā

Writing Things I Learned the Hard Way #4: Milestones
Everyone has hit a milestone at least once in their life. Be it school, writing, painting, acting, career, or even simply just reaching your next birthday. These are all milestones, and every single one of them should be celebrated.
That does not mean you stop.
I have just set myself a new record for writing. As of this morning, I hit 30k words in my WIP. I sit here, staring at my computer screen, looking at my document in amazement. Six words repeat over and over in my head.
I've never made it this far.
The feeling is incredible. It's moving. I'm proud of myself and encouraged by the dedication I've had for very little things in my life. It is a milestone with a documented piece of evidence that I have made it farther than most people statistically do.
But somehow, someway, it's also immobilizing.
For some reason, I stare at the computer screen, excited to get to my developmental edits. But when I think about finishing the draft, I get sad. I feel unmotivated. I feel as though I will give up. I want to stop and relish in this moment, but I know the second I do, I will not get back to work.
So, I celebrate here. I've texted my list of beta readers the milestone achievement, got a few "congrats," and I am telling all of you, whoever may stumble upon this post.
This is my celebration. This is my party. I will not sit and eat my cake until this book series is finished and in my hands.
I know myself.
Milestones should be celebrated. But they are not a reason to sit back.
Press pause. Celebrate. Press play.

WELL HERE IS THE THING, RIGHT? black holes you basically literally have to be in their gravity like pretty much on top of them to be sucked in. so thatās not really an issue. itās TERRIFYING sure, but explains a few things which I will list:
my astronomy teacher said if you were somehow able to survive entering a black hole and reached the bottom or singularity, the way time works is that you would be able to see the entire universe laid out - like youād know when the universe ended if you looked back outwards
which falls into line with the idea that the angels know all of time and everything except when it will all end precisely (or scientifically, the collapse of this universe is unknown, but supposing angels were black holes they would see until this unknown point)
matter falling into a black hole creates a disc of light which is probably among the literal BRIGHTEST things in the universeĀ
there are angels which are supposed to be the wheels of Godās Chariot, so it would make sense if, according to theories, that there ARE massive blackholes at the center of all galaxies which is what cause them to rotate, and those black holes are angels which make the galaxy spin.Ā
black holes were formed sometime after the big bang, which lines into the story of creation, that the angels came after the universe.Ā
angels can choose to physically manifest like humans, but arenāt actually. itās said that you cannot survive looking at them or hearing them directly. NASA says that the ānoteā a black hole emits is the deepest sound found in the universe. i am just guessing here but you would probably die if you heard it up close instead of a bazillion light years away. ALSO side note cool fact apparently thatĀ ānoteā:Ā āā¦Itās worth pointing out that the āsoundā in question is 57 octaves (and one semitone) below middle C, which makes it 247Ć2ā57ā1.71Ć10ā15Hz, or one whole cycle every 18.5 million years.ā CRAZY RIGHT although apparently some sing other notes and basically if thereās anything people know about angels it is that they DEFINITELY SING. anyways you canāt see black holes but you can see the things around them and the soundwaves surrounding them.Ā

I just reada really good fic but halfway through I realized "oh shit this is really familiar.... didn't I write something like this once?" And as I kept reading I kept predicting what happened next and the further I went the more convinced I was that they'd ripped off my story-
like, copied the ENTIRE plot and re-written it, just better than I had? The characters were more fleshed-out than mine were, and the POV was more interesting, and the pace made more sense- but it was MY STORY?
So close to the end I was like "holy shit.. do I message them? Ask if my story inspired theirs? Should I be angry? Flattered?" Cause their tags and description didn't mention me AT ALL, which, sure, it's fanfiction to begin with, but if you're using my work than at least credit me as inspo, right? Just to be courteous?
But I get to the end of the final chapter, and it's not finished, and I'm kind of disappointed cause I never finished my story and I was really immersed in their version now and had been looking forwards to seeing how they tied up my loose ends- so I scroll to the bottom to leave a comment, and.
