The more I read The Picture of Dorian Gray, the more I am convinced that Dorian has ADHD (An essay??? Character study?? I guess??)
When I got to the dreaded chapter 11 of the book, I was nervous bc of what I’ve heard about it being long and almost meaningless, but to me, It was honestly enjoyable. I saw it more as a full character study on Dorian and how Henry has influenced him and his way of life. But the real reason I loved it was because… Dorian is very relatable to me as a person with ADHD.
(Read more below cut)
dorian gray is an abused, orphaned boy who is vulnerable and desperate for attention and engagement and this is why lord henry is able to get to him so deeply so quickly, because he is able to target that exact vulnerability--their first conversation making dorian feel like he's being treated as an equal (someone to talk about deep subjects with rather than merely a subject to be observed silently) by a man of "authority" and simultaneously stripping him immediately of his status as an Equal Human by suggesting he will automatically be worthless once his beauty fades...
Rhaegel please come back inside Targaryen
Everytime someone says Bunny Corcoran would love AI an angel dies. The man who wrote his paper mulitple days early on metahemeralism and john donne? The man who relied fully on Henry to correct him if he was wrong because Henry knows everything? Why would he use AI when he has his whimsiful brain and a human walking encyclopedia at his disposal???
Not to mention Richard says himself Bunny is far too original for his own good hence his paper being almost incomprehensible to anyone but him…

he needs more additions to the gucci room
posting whatever i want because this is my life but i think art deco by lana del rey perfectly fits richard papen. the lyrics are so fucking him like. LOOK:
this is self explanatory. always going to parties and getting high, trying to push down what is clearly depression with nights out
him trying so fucking hard to get in with the greek class but he’s too much of a nervous wreck to actually talk to them (him ducking into doorways and shit) so he just hopes he’s interesting enough to them
him having incredibly low self-esteem, especially abt how he’s viewed as a poor student among incredibly rich people. additionally him trying to feel some type of superiority over the other students at the college (particularly the LA group who, from what he mentions about being lonely in his childhood, he thinks probably would have ignored or bullied him) by ignoring them and refusing to join them (i’m thinking particularly abt when he mentions ignoring ppl who tried to invite him to hang out in the common room of his dorm house)
this last line, particularly the “why?” for some reason makes me think specifically of the part where he mentions discussing social mobility with julian, and how julian shared a particular belief that ppl would never really leave their ‘fated’ social classes bcs the differences were too extreme, and the example of rich ppl and poor ppl trying to be friends painted as absurd. and richard says he disagrees bcs “where would that leave me? still wiping down windows in plano?” or smth along that vein.
IDK IT FITS A LITTLE TOO WELL LIKE UGH. like the need to prove he’s more than what ppl say he is, the need to act out because of it. idk
not to insert myself into the convo but while ur on the topic of tsh and music…
cruel world is another good lana song and it reminds me sm of charles and camilla. not every line but most of the song.
it describes a chaotic relationship where both ppl are “crazy” but one has more autonomy than the other. it reminds me of that convo between richard and francis where francis described both camilla and charles as possessive but only charles is allowed to act on it.
The mention of alcohol. The description of different levels of freedom between the two people. Him being described as crazy and then specifically crazy for her.
mentions of bibles and guns and alcohol and women.
thunder is another lana song that reminds me of charles.
okay moving on from lana… no artist has reminded me of tsh as much as mitski. not necessarily in vibe but in lyrics. pearl diver is soooooo henry. crack baby too (and for richard as well imo). humpty reminds me of charles. square and eric for charles x francis.
eric:
andddd circle for camilla and charles
i could make a whole post about mitski and tsh… i love them sm
honestly, i don't blame anyone for not making the connection between rhaegar targaryen and jon snow. they are such different guys to me. you could organically stumble upon rhaegar playing a silver harp in a clearing in the woods, silently weeping into the flowing waters of a crystalline stream. jon is the teenage manager of a fast food chain who sometimes shows up to work dripping wet because he doesn't own an umbrella.
So funny when people say things like "Henry Winter would hate us all" and act as if he's so untouchable and unimpressed. He liked Bunny, the most intolerable basic white guy ever. He loved Camilla with all her issues and trauma baggage. If you know something remotely associated to classics and love reading, you'd have an opening. Doesn't take much to get in. If you could be slightly less awkward than Richard, less of a parasite than Bunny and slightly less weird than the twins, he'd like you and wouldn't hesitate to help you out, congratulations.
Im so happy with how this turned out

Do you have a design for Helen of Sparta?
very much inspired by this fic by @holy-mother-of-whumpers (sorry for the out of the blue tag)
χαῖρε my name is Henry Arist'otle Divine Ecstasy Winter and I have icy blue eyes like limpid tears (that's how I got my name) and ebony black hair and a lot of people tell me I look like Julian Morrow (AN: if u don’t know who he is get da hell out of here!). I’m not related to Camilla Macaulay but I wish I was because she’s a major fucking hottie. I have pale white skin. I’m also a student, and I go to a private school called Hampden College in Vermont where I’m in the third year (I’m twenty-one). I’m a Classics academic (in case you couldn’t tell) and I wear mostly black. For example today I was wearing a black jacket with a matching starchy white shirt under it and black pants, a black umbrella and black Oxfords. I was walking outside Hampden. It was snowing and raining so there was no sun, which I was very happy about. A lot of hoi polloi stared at me. I put up my middle finger at them.
More Andromache spam bc I can't stop drawing her
“you’re my brother.”
“i know.”
thinking about hope lupins love for her son again. okay he’s a werewolf i will learn to take care of him the way he needs. divorce my husband if he can’t love him that way too. learn remedies and potion ingredients and get in contact with healers to mend his wounds. defend him from the ministry, and anyone else who wants to do him harm. show him joni and carole and dolly and stevie so he has good taste and so he knows about love and women and a good guitar. teach him to garden, to feel the earth in his palms and make it grow, when he feels like all he can do is destroy, show him that can create life, that he can nurture and love like any other boy. call him handsome and pinch his cheeks and hug him too long and he is my son and the love of my life and my best friend. okay he’s gay, all the better then, drag him to pride protests, make shirts that say i love my gay son and raise my voice loud, and when his boyfriend comes into my life, i will love him too. i was born for this. it was written in my code. beautiful boy, soft-spoken boy. my strange creation, my work of art that i wrought on the world. one day you will become a soldier. one day you will forget the gentle hand of love. one day you will kill but for now there is compost to be taken out. chickens to feed. soil to till, and you are safe.

I feel like a lot of people forget that the Van Dir Linde gang was actually famous in their universe- Dutch Van Dir Linde was as famous as the real life Butch Cassidy. The gang had as much infamy as the Wild Bunch or the Dalton gang. Arthur Morgan, John Marston, Bill Williamson, Javier Esculla, Lenny Summers, Charles Smith, Sean McGuire and more were probably as famous as the real life Doc Holliday, Jesse James, Black Bart, Rufus Buck, Ike Clanton, the Sundance Kid, Wild Bill Hickock, and more.
Sadie Adler would've been just as famous. She was a gunslinger like the real life Calamity Jane and Anne Oakley and she was an outlaw at one point like Laura Bullion, Pearl Hart, Belle Star, The Cassidy Sisters, and more.
The other women of the camp would've probably been less popular but still very intriguing figures to people in the future.
In the newspapers, we see that there are songs about Dutch's boys and books too. Trelawny mentions them being on dime novels. In the future, the pieced together story of the Van Dir Linde gang might've gotten adapted into a movie, similar to "Butch Cassidy and the Sun Dance Kid" or "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford". They could've gotten biopics, documentaries, and more.
Historians and fans of the wild West era would dig up records, find pictures, and maybe even track down people who were apart of the gang, accomplices to the gang, or victims of the gang. They would try to piece together stories to figure out the mystery of what actually happened to the gang.
People would argue over things that happened in the gang and have their evidence to back it up. Letters written by gang members would become so valuable. If they ever someone come across Arthur's journal, it would probably be considered one of the most valuable pieces of documentation to ever exist for that time period.
The guns of the gang would probably be kept in museums if found. Albert Mason's portrait of Arthur Morgan would be found in history books, same as other pictures.
Dutch would probably be a very controversial figure in history- some would hail him as a failed hero and others would condemn his violence no matter the reason- they wouldn't know what the people in the gang knew- especially in the end. Same with the rest of the gang members.
They'd probably all get romanticized. Hosea and Dutch's friendship, the raising of the boys, Dutch and Annabelle and his fued with Colm, Mary and Arthur, John and his family, Javier being a revolutionary- no one would know the full story.
And then there is Jack- he may live to see the 1960s and 70s and 80s. He may have grandchildren who'd pull him into a theater to watch a retelling of the gang that he was a part of at one point. He'd be amused. He'd think that the actor playing his father was too clean looking, too pretty. He'd think that the movie Arthur was too skinny. He'd think that the man playing Dutch had a funny voice as he tried to mimic the accent. He'd laugh and make notes in his head of the historical accuracy. He'd feel sorrowful at the deaths of the characters- he knew them at some point. And no one at the theater would know that the old man with the rowdy bright eyed boys who brought him there was Jack Marston, the last of the Van Dir Linde gang.
Jack might talk about it to the public. He might do interviews. He might even write a book about his father, the infamous John Marston. Those would be priceless. Even Beecher's Hope might be kept around and visited as a historical site for history goers.
And honestly? It is such a bittersweet thing.
no because I just remembered that in "Circe" by Madeline miller (and properly other media too) Circe marries Telemachus like what!! and in that book she also has a child with Odysseus so why the heck did she marry Telemachus and had children with him. it was one of the reasons I did not like the book cuz it kinda felt like incest like marrying your half brothers mom?? weird af. and no matter what anybody say I think it is disgusting. anyway bye bluebs
this is based off of the telegony. the telegony is, how do you say, complete and utter bullshit.
if you want the smart person explanation, the telegony was written YEARS after Homer (so you know, probably not by him) and is widely considered by Greek scholars to be essentially, bad Wattpad fanfiction.
if you want the "gray-doesn't-give-a-fuck" explanation, the telegony sucks and is the dumbest shit i've ever heard of.
This is misinformation.
> the telegony was written YEARS after Homer
No, “The Returns” is already attested in the 7th century, less than a century after Homer. The Telegony was written in the 6th century based on the previous epic during the archaic period. It doesn’t get more ancient than that.
> (so you know, probably not by him)
What do you mean? Homer was most likely not a real person. Scholars now believe that the Iliad and the Odyssey weren’t even written by the same people.
> and is widely considered by Greek scholars to be essentially, bad Wattpad fanfiction.
This is bullshit. Name one Greek scholars who says that the Telegony is “bad Wattpad fanfiction”. You pulled this out of your ass.
> the telegony sucks and is the dumbest shit ive ever heard of.
Thank god we have your sage counsel about which ancient texts are dumb or not. You’re so clever!
