I don't know how to explain it well, but if I can summarize my frustrations about Hank Green's admission of using ChatGPT for research (based on the tweet's context, it seems that the research relates to his show, AHA) is WHY ON EARTH DID HE THINK PEOPLE WOULD WATCH THE SHOW IF WE ALL KNEW THAT HE WAS USING CHATGPT??
The beauty of AHA to me, was that it created a safe space where one's silly and big curiousities were DULY RESEARCHED AND TAKEN SERIOUSLY by someone whose branding was PURSUING KNOWLEDGE, THE BEAUTY OF RESEARCH, AND EMBRACING YOUR DESIRE TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THE WORLD.
AHA was a hit because it celebrated the human mind and our sense of wonder.
And now, we're all finding out he's been using ChatGPT for research. I AM SO UTTERLY REPULSED, I FEEL LIKE SOMEONE THREW MUD ON MY FACE.
(Addendum because I woke up and realized I'm still not done being upset about this)
I don't quite know what he meant by "a ton of pressure" but if he ever felt the need to rush pumping content out because the channel has been doing well, It's SO DISAPPOINTING.
As someone who has watched his content for a little more than a decade, I can safely say that his audience would understand it if he told us that AHA episodes and other Complexly content would take more time because of the extent of research needed. Releasing content takes time. Pursuing knowledge takes time.
If he felt pressured to upload faster and took a cheap AI shortcut to do so, then it's no better than the AI slop creators abound who choose to take the easy road than actually put in the work for their content.
It's all just so disappointing.
i'm so tired of this fucking house (fandom) but the neighbors (majority of fans) are really lovely, but the HOA (loud group of shitheads) are driving me nuts

my sister's boyfriend asked me what i've been doing during the summer, i say i've been working on commissions. He asks what kind, i say "oh mostly greek mythology related stuff."
And this man - he looks at me and goes "oh is that because of (nolan's) the odyssey?"
yes you can dislike modern retellings of greek mythology, you can dislike Epic the Musical or The Song of Achilles or even Percy Jackson (I am not sure if its considered to be a retelling but still) based on your own personal tastes but to act like you are better than others who got into greek mythology through retellings instead of formal education from the "accurate" sources is rude.... It feels very discouraging when you get treated as someone "lower" for your personal tastes. Many people including myself who discovered the beautiful world of hellenic mythology through the above mentioned modern sources are actually open to learn more about it and to read multiple interpretations of a single myth like lets say- of the Iliad's plot. Not all of us think that lets say the plot of The Song of Achilles is the absolute truth and are very very well aware that Achilles is not as innocent as the madeline miller's book makes him out to be. Especially given that Patroclus in that book is an unreliable narrator and obviously because he is so deeply attached to Achilles for whatever reasons it might be he is very biased towards him.
Still, you can dislike that book and other retellings, but people who like it are not all stupid plebians who "dont know nuance".
Besides you cant police people to perceive the myths exactly the way you like, I mean I have my own conditions too such as I dont particularly like Hades and Persephone being read as a romantic pair and generally have a disdain for the "dark romance" genre. But truth to be told myths are fluid there is no concept "canon" or "accurate characterisation" when it comes to myths because mind you Helen from Iliad is very different from Helen in Odyssey and the latter is a sequel to the former. There are also interpretations where Iphigenia does not die and Agamemnon instead sacrifices a deer (which if you know changes a lot of things- such as without that incident the plot of Orestia would have never taken place). There is also a version by Euripedes where Helen never goes to Troy. There are so many different interpretations of a single myth.
Myths evolve with time adapt to the moralities of the relevant time period and thats why retellings will always going to be a thing whether you like it or not.
In my opinion the hellenic myth community has much bigger problems such as racism and homophobia which are more serious than mostly a bunch of teenagers lacking nuance because they are still learning to think critically
