Piazza dei Miracoli, Piazza del Duomo, Pisa, Province of Pisa, Italy

This prompted me to do my every-now-and-then reading on what the heck is up with this tower. I forget in between times how hilarious it is.
This is all just wikipedia, I'm not out reading architecture books.
Built in three stages over 199 years
Foundation is only 3 metres (approx 9 feet) deep so that's a problem
Begun in 1173, the second floor was being built in 1178 and that's when she just starts to pitch over
OK so now we're having some wars and we're too busy to work on this two storey weak foundation building, it's just sitting there at an angle
Which gives the soil time to settle down and I guess we're just at this angle now, but at least not toppling
Until 1233, 55 years later, they decided to start building again
I don't know what to tell you. I probably would have suggested starting over but I'm not a Pisan tower patron in the 13th century
What are you going to do, in 1266, when you're working on this slopey monster?
Floors taller on one side than the other to compensate
So we're all in on this now - the tower is both leaning AND has a curve
Also architectural fashions have changed so the poor bastard who does the very tippy top in 1372 (the other floors were complete in 1319, guess they all went out for a very long smoko before starting the bell tower) has to reconcile its gothic style with the romanesque style of the rest of the building
There have been numerous attempts to stop the building from falling over, some made it worse
And yet, it has withstood 4 strong earthquakes in its lifetime, just bouncing in place on the soft soil if I am reading that right
This building just fascinates me because can you imagine being in the planning meetings in 1233 where they're like.... ahhh yeah she leans but let's just keep going, eh?
