Okay, I need to add some clarification and correction to this.
This photo is known as The Pale Blue Dot. It was taken by Voyager 1, a space probe meant to explore the outer reaches of the solar system. Far from dying, she's still out there doing her job and is the furthest human made object from Earth.
In the mid 80's, they knew Voyager 1 would soon pass beyond where her cameras would matter and she needed to save power, so the question became: what's the last thing she should take a picture of?
Carl Sagan and Carolyn Porco both independently had the same thought: take a picture of Earth. Us. Yes, it would be essentially just one pixel. It wouldn't be scientifically useful. It might even damage the camera because of how intense the sun is, even forty times as far from Earth as Earth is from the Sun. But they got it sorted because it's NASA.
3.7 million (not billion) miles away, that's Earth. Caught in bands of light, artifacts of the Sun's incredible power even 4 million miles away. We are an island in a sea of radiation and vacuum and it's all we have.
I can't say it better than Sagan did, so I'll let you alone with his words:
From this distant vantage point, the Earth might not seem of any particular interest. But for us, it's different. Consider again that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar", every "supreme leader", every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there â on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.
The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.
Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.
The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand.
It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.
ââCarl Sagan
I think the truth is just a lot better.
Do you see it, my dear child?
See what, father?
That little speck in the sky, that little blue dot.
Yes. I see it.
The stories tell of whole civilizations that have risen and fallen, joy and tears shed all the same, all on that little blue dot.
How? It's so small. It can't be that important.
Not to us, perhaps. But to them, it's their everything. It's everything that they've ever seen, ever loved, ever held dear, ever lost. It's all the times they've laughed and cried, all the times they've kept each other close when they thought that little blue dot was crumbling.
But it's not, is it? That little blue dot?
Of course not, dear child. No, it'll be there long after you and I are gone. But the stories will carry on, for that little blue dot is their home.
Are we their little blue dot?
Maybe. Maybe they're pointing up at our sun and asking themselves what exists beyond. But even though we're just a little blue dot to them, this little blue dot is our entire life. All of ours.
So we're small to them, too?
Yes. But our stories are still shining brighter than ever, and they can only shine with one another. For all the times we've fought and tried to tear each other down, in the end, we're all here together, and so are they. Maybe they have some others trying to take them down as well.
Do they know that they're all together?
They do now. Your words will carry across the stars to them, and maybe they'll help someone who's feeling a little lonely.
I hope they know their little blue dot is beautiful.
They do, child. They do. Now rest.
Goodnight, little blue dot. I love you. Can you say you love them too, father?
I love you, little blue dot. And may you love each other always, for your love is what keeps you shining.

also absolutely gorgeous poem I'm gonna cry now
I just remembered that this was a thing that was HILARIOUS in 2006 and apparently that was ten years ago now.
Old people: join with me in remembering how funny we found this on LiveJournal.
Young people: look at this lolrus, itâs so happy, it has a bucket.
And then they stealed away the bucket and we realised we had fucked up a perfectly good elephant seal and given it anxiety.
listen this vintage meme is high quality and i will hear nothing said against it
20 years. I am not happy about this.
Iâm delighted at the bucket reappearing but dismayed at the passage of time
Happy 20 years to Lolrus and his bucket!
Okay but why did they take his bucket.
So I was scrolling and saw this image in an article about the European heat wave,
And was like, uh, are you missing something there, buddy? Like all that red in northern Africa? Because that's a lot of red.
And I was going to give them the benefit of doubt, since I don't know much about the climate in Northern Africa, aside from Morroco and Egypt, which seem like really hot places, so you know, maybe it's normal there?
But nope, that's not the case:
Africa is struggling with heat waves and many countries on the continent lack the resources rich economies have to deal with rising temperat
Some selections from the article:
"The region has been experiencing some of the most intense heat waves in recent years, but in many cases theyâve been under-reported due to misconceptions about Africansâ ability to withstand them.
âAfrica is seen as a sunny and hot continent,â said Amadou Thierno Gaye, a research scientist and professor at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar, the capital of Senegal. âPeople think we are used to heat, but we are having high temperatures for a longer duration. Nobody is used to this.â
"The Sahel, for instance, has been heating at a faster pace than the global average despite being hot already. Burkina Faso and Mali, both in West Africaâs Sahel, are among countries that are set to become almost uninhabitable by 2080, if the world continues on its current trajectory, a UK university study found. Its people are especially vulnerable due to shrinking resources, such as water, and poor amenities, and a dearth of trees and parks means there are few options for places to cool off."
I love rebloging. Itâs the adult equivalent of showing everyone the cool rock I just found.
This is an awesome use of what is probably a master's degree if not a doctorate and I am 100% thrilled that she shared it even though it was embarrassing and she squeaked.
Thank you, adorable scientist, for making people's lives better.
As an Australian, THIS WOMAN IS A FUCKING GODSEND.

so today a public health official guy came into my class to give a lecture on disaster awareness and he was talking about house fires and mentioned that the reason people most likely die during a house fire is because they refuse to leave their pet inside or they go back to get their pet. and right when he said this my friend immediately turned his head and looked at me and in that moment I had the most complete and genuine acceptance take over my body. I would 100% in front of my family and Jesus himself walk straight back into some raging inferno that was once my house to go get my fat cat. I nodded back
the best part of this post is reading all the tags from animal people who would also go back to save their pets. like no hesitation. walk backwards from heaven straight back into hell. someone even said they would go back for their fish. amazing
If you are a person who would walk into a blazing inferno for your animal, and your pet has free movement around the house, hereâs a training exercise that could help save you both:
1) Set off your smoke alarm or play the sound on your phone (if your home has no smoke alarms, pease get some!)
2) stand BY THE FRONT DOOR to hand out treats
Do this a couple times and then keep it up NO EXCEPTIONS. Accidentally set the alarm off cooking? Treats by the door. Smoke alarm sound on TV? Treats by the door. Changing your smoke alarm batteries twice a year like youâre supposed to? Give them a test run and your pets get treats by the door.
Most dogs and cats will clue in VERY quickly that hearing that specific sound means go to the front door and wait for treats.
If thereâs an emergency and even if you leave by another way, you will still know the most likely place your pet(s) is and can direct first responders to help.
You can also do this for any other kind of emergency alarm. My friend had both her cats trained to go to the front door for a tsunami siren.
PET SAFETY IS A GOOD THING
reasons i havenât replied back:

we're moving to an internet where children would be banned from reaching out for help and friendship online but abusive parents can post their children's every second online to humiliate and expose them for money with no pushback
I am all for trying to make the internet safer for kids. I am all for teaching digital literacy and safety. I am not all for putting any sort of access to the internet at all behind the wall of majority.
Kids SHOULD, yes I said should, have some sort of entry into the internet space before they are 18. Why? Because if, God forbid, something goes horribly wrong, they have parents to go to, and if nothing else, the legal shield of being a minor. Iâm not saying give ten-year-olds free rein on the internet. What I am saying is that a teenager should be able to have Instagram, and YouTube, and Discord, and learn to use them responsibly before their legal and parental supports basically disappear. Banning kids from the internet is like saying âyou canât read any books with anything not perfectly G-rated until you graduate high school.â How are you supposed to learn critical reading without something that needs to be read critically? You canât teach digital literacy without digital spaces to be literate in.
Oh, and family vlogging should be illegal, thanks.
I agree with this wholeheartedly, there is so much research that supports children using the internet, especially marginalized children
ânever kill yourselfâ is such a funny phrase to me that i think itâs accidently started working. its like an affrimation. say ânever kill yourselfâ enough times as a joke and maybe you wonât try to kill yourself over minor inconviences anymore
i made this image for the express purpose of this
How quickly we forget the dangerous crow boy whoâs job it is to destroy plastic

None of my works or anything is stopping, just becoming less frequent. I am SO sorry to all my moots and friends, if I get the time and space I will be getting on as much as I can, but as I said i have little control
