lesbian heated rivalry wouldnât be in hockey because there are already many out queer women in hockey due to the fact that hockey is viewed as a menâs sport. the whole reason hockey is captivating for mlm is because it is a toxically masculine sport and the idea of having out queer men in that sport is surprising (requiring them to stay closeted/have situationships/etc), whereas it is not nearly as surprising for queer women. therefore, lesbian heated rivalry would actually occur in a setting like ballet, gymnastics, or some other stereotypically feminine sport (that has toxic feminine standards) where queer women are not as visible. in this essay i will

Okay so I am having thoughtsâ˘ď¸ about The Magicians again (what else is new)
But okay- I think the reason the show resonates so deeply with so many people, myself included, is that ultimately it is the deepest story about found family and love.
But not in the traditional sense. We have Quentin- a depressed, nerdy, suicidal absolute loser of a guy who not only is a (sort of failed) chosen one but gets into this group of other people who are all losers/ failed chosen ones who are also suffering in their own ways. All of them have a lot of trauma.
And they become friends. In every single timeline. Every time. And they work together on quests, for the beast, for Fillory, for the seven keys, for whatever has to get done.
But ultimately, fuck destiny and fuck their âjobsâ and fuck the timelines they will each do anything and everything for each other in every timeline and in every circumstance. Killing actual fucking gods to save magic? Killing multiple gods brutally to save Eliot? Finding and creating magic no one even knew possible to bring one of their own back (like Alice).
Going to the literal ends of the fucking earth for each other every single time. Just because. Just because theyâre family, theyâre friends, theyâre lovers theyâre the only group of people who at the end of the day give a fuck about each other.
No one else really cares about them in the grand scheme of things outside of what they were capable of helping people with- but they do.
Theyâre a bunch of losers so dedicated to each other that in every timeline and in every universe they are willing to do anything at all- as long as itâs for one of their own.
Itâs devotion and love in the purest form and itâs something I find really captivating and moving and entertaining to see.
And also, at its core, itâs just a show for losers and I love and stand by that.
Yeah, this is definitely the major draw of the show!
*spoilers?*
And i think this is for sure one of the reasons the characters not fighting harder to get Quentin back feels like it goes against the tone of the show. Like I feel a more on theme version of season 5 wouldn't have involved them accepting that, but working to get him back and being like fuck it, while we are fishing in the Underworld, we want Penny back too. Because, yeah, it is written as a group of people who are so incredibly devoted to each other, they'd fight death itself.
Something everyone should know either as an authority or as a person labouring under an authority, being anywhere from a babysitter to a parent to a government entity, is that establishing a rule of any kind is incredibly labour-intensive and difficult to enforce.
So if you're going to make something into a rule, it HAS to be something you can both Verify and Enforce- if you can Verify but not Enforce, it's essentially just a suggestion. If it's something you can Enforce but not Verify, you're going to waste a lot of energy and time becoming an authoritarian dictator that nobody likes.
And because the process of Verification and Enforcement BOTH take a LOT of work, it makes no sense to waste all that work on establishing a Rule which has no Function.
For this reason, every Rule you set must perform a Function which gives you a return that is, if not greater, then at least EQUAL to the energy it takes to maintain, in one way or another. Otherwise, the whole system collapses.
Any authority that exists has limited time and limited resources, so it must prioritize rules that minimize the MOST HARM, that are EASIEST TO VERIFY, and are MOST ENFORCEABLE.
So, before you CREATE a rule, you must ask yourself:
ďťżďťżďťżWhat does this rule accomplish?
ďťżďťżďťżIs the reward of this rule greater than the expense of establishing it?
ďťżďťżďťżCan I verify when this rule has been violated?
ďťżďťżďťżCan I feasibly discipline one to violates this rule?
And, what I would argue is almost MOST important after all that,
5. How do I explain this rule in a way that people will want to follow it?
As a parent, for example, "do not set a campfire in the living room" is a good rule, because it is easily explained as a risk to personal safety and property, it's a rare enough situation to come up, it's easy to tell when it's happened, and a consequence like "you will not be left unsupervised for an extended period of time" or "you will write a report on house fires" could be implemented as discipline.
But as a parent, "no eating outside of meal times" is not a great rule in most circumstances. For one, food is easy to access, the harm that can come from snacking between meals is almost zero, it's almost impossible to prove, and there is no feasible way to stop someone from doing it OR make them WANT to follow it without lowering yourself to abuse.
So, if there is a behaviour an authority wants you to follow, it must first ask itself Why. Then decide if that is reasonable. Then decide if it should be a Rule or a Suggestion.
If the desired rule is not verifiable, or enforceable, then the authority must make peace with the fact that it will be taken as a suggestion. It has no other choice but to become an enemy, and slowly lose all respect and credibility.
You cannot make "no snacking" into a rule. But you CAN say, "this is how you keep a balanced diet, this is how you stay healthy, please don't take more than you'll eat at dinner, save leftovers for later".
You CAN make "no fire pits indoors" into a rule, and you can remain vigilant that it doesn't happen and give it your full focus when it does.
This is where laws based on social or religious judgement fail.
You cannot Verify or Enforce against drugs, crossdressing, homosexuality, sodomy, satanism, tattoos, prostitution, oral sex, or abortion. Not in any way that matters. Not in any way that Protects more than it Harms. It's difficult to prove, difficult to enforce, and it happens too much and too consensually to universally oppose. You can only expend energy and cultivate a population that distrusts you in trying.
You CAN Verify and Enforce against violence, abuse, theft, fraud, embezzlement, discrimination, and murder. Because it DOES Protect more than it Harms, and you can justify the expenses. Because these are things that happen nonconsentually, and can be prioritized, because there are Victims who experience Harm. Enforcing these rules can cultivate safety and trust instead of suspicion, cooperation instead of opposition within a populace.
Which is why laws against anything that does not cause harm, in my opinion, is doomed.
Because I've been raised and raised kids and seen kids raised in both ways, and I know that "because I said so" does nothing.
If you cannot Verify or Enforce, then the best you can do is Educate, provide safe options, and build a system to heal and recover for any potential fallout.
Like. Iâve never been to college for this, Iâve never studied social engineering or criminal Justice, but in my experience working with children and doing private security everything Iâve experienced has taught me

âŚ..not even six hours later i got an offer of a well paying full time long-term job with free room and board in queens in nyc, allowing me independence and a way to escape an abusive situation and an unhealthy environment

A woman whose epilepsy was greatly improved by an experimental brain implant was devastated when she was forced to have it removed.
A woman whose epilepsy was greatly improved by an experimental brain implant was devastated when, just two years after getting it, she was forced to have it removed due to the company that made it going bankrupt.
Specifically, because she couldn't afford to buy the implant from the company. They basically took her implant back to recoup their losses. This is what happens when you privatize healthcare and health research. The group providing her with this implant should not have been able to go bankrupt in the first place, let alone repossess her implant to pay off their debts.
This is what disabled people mean when we say that cyberpunk horror is just a reality for us. This woman was literally forced to undergo a surgery because she couldn't pay to keep the implant already inside her brain. How long till companies start repossessing pacemakers and transplants?
not to return after like half a year to syfy magicians-post but why is this bit from a comedian who has been making me laugh recently literally Eliot đ
Anyone who portrays a woman that friendszones a man as not just sympathetic but *correct* and *intelligent* for doing so has my undying reader loyalty tbh

There once was a man from the sticks
Whose limericks stopped at line six.
They were fine till line five
Then they took quite a dive â
But the problem is easy to fix
If you just ignore the last line, it doesn't even follow the rhyme scheme oh god I've really lost control of this thing I'm so sorry...
There once was a fellow named Dan,
Whose poetry never would scan.
When told this was so,
He replied, "Yes, I know--
It's because I try to squeeze as many syllables into the last line as I possibly can."
On Tumblr did lasses and lads
Their way with fail poetry had.
You're having your fun
But you're fooling no one -
It takes skill to do something this bad.
This is about the sexiness of The Golden Girls but I really feel the need to remind the world of how fucking progressive this show was.
In the episode 72 hours, we find out Rose may have contracted AIDs during an emergency gallbladder surgery.
Rose: Why me, Blanche? I'm tired of pretending I feel okay so you won't say, 'Take it easy', and I'm tired of you saying 'Take it easy' because you're afraid I'm going to fall apart. Dammit, why is this happening to me? I mean, this isn't supposed to happen to people like me. You must've gone to bed with hundreds of men. All I had was one innocent operation.
Blanche: Hey, wait a minute! Are you saying this should be me and not you?
Rose: No! No, I'm just saying that I am a good person. Hell, I'm a goody-two-shoes!
Blanche: AIDS is not a bad person's disease, Rose, it is not God punishin' people for their sins!
In Isn't it romantic? we find out Dorothy's childhood best friend is a lesbian who recently lost her partner. She confesses she has feelings for Rose. Rose turns her down but makes it clear that she still wants to be friends even though she doesn't return those feelings.
Sophia: Jean is a nice person. She happens to like girls instead of guys. Some people like cats instead of dogs.
Jean: Rose, about last night. I should never have said anything.
Rose: You only said what you were feeling.
Jean: It's just that this last year has been so difficult for me. Pat was the person I planned to spend the rest of my life with. And when she died, I just felt so terribly alone. Empty. I thought I could never care for anyone again. Until I met you. I just got very confused. I hope I didn't make you uncomfortable.
Rose: Well, I have to admit that I don't understand these kinds of feelings. But if I did understand, if I were, you know, like you, I'd be very flattered and proud that you thought of me that way.
Ebbtide's Revenge gives us Phil's funeral, and Sophia addressing him wearing women's clothes.
Rose: So what if he was different? It's okay that you loved him.
Sophia: I did love him. He was my son, my little boy. But every time I saw him I wondered what I did, what I said, when was the day I did whatever I did to make him the way he was.
Angela Petrillo: What he was Sophia, was a good man.
Sister of the Bride, where Blanche's brother Clayton brings his boyfriend to town, because they're planning on getting married.
Blanche: Oh, look, I can accept the fact that he's gay, but why does he have to slip a ring on this guy's finger so the whole world will know?
Sophia: Why did you marry George?
Blanche: We loved each other. We wanted to make a lifetime commitment. Wanted everybody to know.
Sophia: That's what Doug and Clayton want, too. Everyone wants someone to grow old with. And shouldn't everyone have that chance?
There are so many episodes I could sit here and quote but this show is still so important. It isn't perfect, there are jokes that definitely don't land that I will not sit here and defend, but in the context of when it was created? This show is a fucking masterpiece and deserves respect for that.
i have not thought about the magicians in years but i wonder how s4 wouldve gone if quentin was possessed instead of eliot.
like ik the reason eliot was possessed was bc he tried to shoot the monster to keep quentin from throwing his life away in blackspire and that fucker wanted revenge.
then the monster hunted quentin down bc he promised to stay by his side.
but what if it had been quentin possessed. personally i think eliot wouldve gone to the same lengths that quentin did. man tried to shoot a monster god just to keep his friend, ex bf/husband?, close.
he would not accept any solution that ended in quentin dying. and the way most of them accepted quentin dying in s5 is such bs.
imagine eliot trying to find a solution to that doesnt end up with quentin dying while their friends are prepared for the fucking worst.
so yeah the monster possessing quentin rather than eliot wouldve been just as interesting to me.
I think Julia would also be on board with this. Also, I feel like the show massively underplayed how close Quentin and Margot were. Quentin being possessed would've been so interesting, especially since I find eliot more reckless than Quentin, same with Julia. The chaos that would've unfolded...
Yeah, s5 did not understand grief or just wanted the audience to forget about Quentin. Why the fuck do we go from s4 julia grieving so hard she gets magic back to her choosing a Date Outfit? Like wtf
That video of Alex Hirsch reading S&P notes for Gravity Falls conveys a few things to me:
1) the U.S. entertainment industry (especially animation) is run by older conservative types who make up offensive terms and get really mad about them.
2) the people who run Disney would be the first to fall in line with a fascist regime.
3) most of the media we consume is tailor-made and watered-down to appeal to the tastes of older, deeply religious conservative audiences.
4) conservatism, not the left, is and always has been the biggest voice of censorship in American culture.
J. Michael Straczynski, creator of Babylon 5, was before that a producer and writer for a number of cartoons in the late â80s/early â90s (The Real Ghostbusters and the original She-Ra, most notably). After a few years of dealing with the censors and their obsession with finding Satanism (or at least looking for Satanism to further political agendas) he wrote an article about the whole corrupt and bullshit system.
And published it in Penthouse, to force those same censors to buy a skin mag. The editor there asked, why Penthouse?
That one is from his autobiography, Becoming Superman. See also:
(As he goes on to say, heâs never worked in animation againâheâs effectively been blacklisted by the cartoon industry.)
Every time something like this comes up, I remember two stories about making media. The first is about movies, and comes from Quentin âFeet Manâ Tarantino.
When he was making Pulp Fiction, he was worried that the MPAA would object to the high level of violence in the film, so he shot a bunch of extra-gory stuff that he didnât actually want in the film, and added it in before submitting it to the MPAA. Predictibly, they asked him to cut most of it (without even commenting on some of the things that had him worried, like the bits of Marvinâs skull that lodge in Samuel L. Jacksonâs hairpiece). The resultant cuts were actually more permissive than heâd expected, so he cut a little more and submitted it, and it got passed with an R.
The second story is about that artist on Morrowind whose name escapes me (Iâm not a big ES fan tbh) who figured out that if he made two creature designs, one weird and what he wanted, and one even weirder, he could get Todd Howard to agree to just about anything by showing him the whopper first, then going back and âworkingâ for another few hours on a second, âtoned-downâ version, and it worked every time.
The reason I bring these up is that the thing that drives censors isnât some extant physical rubrick of what is and isnât acceptable, itâs the idea that they can have absolute power over someone elseâs creative work. Itâs about the social dominance of the interaction.
There is nothing so innocent, so clean, that a censor will not find some fault with it. Because they must find something wrong with it to justify their existence, and because it makes them feel powerful.
Iâve been a professional designer for 8 years and that last bit is so true. In addition to politics, a huge part of people meddling with creative work is just ego. They want to feel like they had a hand in the final product, even though they not only did not create it but are in fact incapable of creating something on that level. So they reach their hand into someone elseâs work and command it to change, not in service of a mutual artistic goal, but simply because they have the power to do so and they like feeling that power.
As I recall, the Kirk and Ihura kiss in TOS of Star Trek, they did similar things to skirt the censors - made sure all other takes were flubbed so only the one with the kiss could be used. Not mention the blatant political elements they were told to take out while casually slipping in all kinds of political allegories under their nose.

fun fact: these are actual vocal warm ups he would do, and used this as a way to interact with the audience while being able to stretch while performing .
also he was a witch and he used it as a spell like look at that power
This performance at Live Aid literally was unlike anything anyone had seen. No one, and I mean, NO ONE has ever owned a crowd like this.
Other performers have literally said since, âFreddy basically changed live performance forever and left us NOTHING.â (affectionate)
I am convinced he was blessed by the gods. He was a fucking herald for said gods or something. Hell, thereâs that vid of the Green Day fans waiting for the concert to begin and fucking singing in perfect fucking harmony to Bohemian Rhapsody! Freddy isnât even alive and he still fucking commands a crowd!
