A history and mythology lesson reminding you that trans and non-binary people have always existed! [Long post]
positioning public libraries as the primary solution to restricted information access assumes that the country you live in has public libraries + those libraries have the funding to pay for the right to access global information databases, which is something that even colleges and universities in many parts of the world cannot afford. it's pretty common for libraries including university libraries in many countries to be unable to provide access to research databases, with students entirely reliant on shadow libraries for basic course materials. even attending a western university that has enough capital to fund imperialist wars and the war bank (ex. the many colleges and universities in toronto) you are not guaranteed full access to these databases and end up reliant on shadow libraries regardless. open access is the only real solution this issue
Today, 25 February, in 1971, New York newspaper The Village Voice published an article, titled Asexuals Have Problems Too. The article satirised earlier debates in the paper, which had argued over whether straight or gay people had things harder, positing that being asexual in a sex-obsessed world was the hardest of all. You can read the whole thing here.
Although the article was not intended to be taken seriously, it resonated with readers â some wrote in thanking the author for increasing the visibility of asexuality, others wrote in solidarity, hoping to learn more about how to support the ace community.
If youâd like to hear more about this moment in ace history, check out our podcast!

Someday, I sincerely hope, we will hold him accountable for the wreckage he has made of our country and much of the rest of the world.
The concept of being 4 months clean from ai...
idc what you guys think I'm proud of him
Several AI services (chatbots đŤŠ) are purposely addictive, the same way people can become addicted to gambling or shopping. Weâve literally seen in real time how ChatGPT has caused psychosis and delusions in people; it can have a huge affect on someonesâs mental stability. Just because it isnât substance-based doesnât mean that doesnât count as an addiction, and shaming people who are trying to move on and improve themselves is counterproductive. Im proud of that dude and his 4 month mark!
AI chatbots can fuel emotional dependence and blur boundaries. Emerging research highlights significant mental health risks. Here are import
Large language models often prioritise agreeability over truthfulness to the detriment of users
AI addiction includes the overuse of AI chatbots and companions, often leading to adverse psychological effects.
Some articles to back my statements, and this isnât even mentioning about the predatory chatbots who do this on purpose
Im gonna be so real can yall actually talk about ways we can support trans women in the UK instead of giving all the attention to fucking JKR. I wish depression were an emergency. I wish someone could take one look at how sick I am and go âoh my god, we need to get you to a hospital!â and then when we get there I get rushed into surgery and the surgeons say âitâs a good thing you brought her here when you did, this is a seriously advanced caseâ and then they put me under and spend the next ten hours pulling metres of long, sticky black strands of gunk out of my body, throwing it immediately into an incinerator so that it canât infect anyone else. And then they could stitch me back up and I could rest a few days, and when I leave the hospital everyone can see how much better I am and they congratulate me saying âwell done, youâve been so brave, Iâm so glad youâre ok. I love you.â
Sister post to The Vitamin
Did you know that after they switched to blind auditions, major symphony orchestras hired women between 30% to 55% more? Before bringing in âblind auditionsâ with a screen to conceal the the candidate, women in the top 5 major orchestras made up less than 5% of the musicians performing.
so I believe it was actually more complicated than that, in interesting ways. Because at first, when they did blind auditions, they were STILL hiring more men.
âŚThen they put down a carpet, so that high heels didnât clack on the floor, and BOOM women were suddenly getting hired.
The testers didnât even know thatâs what they were picking up on, which just goes to show how tiny of a cue it takes for misogyny to kick in.
The case of blind auditions for orchestras and how it dramatically changed the gender makeup of orchestras is a very illuminating example of gender bias, and an interesting possible way of countering it.
You can be sexist without knowing it. You can be racist without knowing it. This is not a moral failing; it is a moral imperative to remember that you are fallible, and take steps to limit the damage your squishy ape brainâs foibles can cause.
The final chapter in Malcolm Gladwellâs Blink (2005) describes this in detail.
What you donât usually hear about when discussing this blind audition process is that after the blind auditions were implemented, when women had gotten many positions in the orchestra, men no longer saw being a member as prestigious and the salaries for the entire orchestra dropped.

all women should feel safe at all times in all places
imagine ur living inside a tiny mushroom house... with a tiny chimney.... deep in the woods... no one knows u exist... u make soup in a tiny pot.....u are free
Despite the occasional silly decision by upper management, I am still extremely grateful to share this community with you all, staff included.
More and more it feels like no place on the internet is safeâeverything is Observed, Controlled, and Micromanaged by tech companies and billionaires with overt fascist goals. The Almighty Algorithm chooses what we see, and if the publicâs reactions to its incessant advertising isnât stellar enough, then our responses will simply be suppressed or replaced by AI. Social media more and more is designed to prevent us from talking to each other, and to keep us emotional. Outraged. Alone. All the better to manipulate us.
Iâm sure this is all very profitable. But itâs also outright demeaning, and immensely unhealthy both for us as individuals and for our society.
And no, Tumblr isnât perfect on these counts. But itâs the best option Iâve found, and I want them to succeed. I want Xitter and Instagram and Facebook to die, and I want to see humanity engaging with one another, and with long pieces of textâfactsâlogicâand empathy, again. If we are to have social media, let it be like Tumblr; or the very best of what Tumblr could be.
So thank you, @staff , for continuing to build this space for us. I hope going forward you run more of these updates by usâthe user base that loves this site and wants it to be the very best it can be. Together, I know we can be the next pdf.
it's genuinely bullshit that you should be required to own a mobile phone for participation in literally any aspect of life
this should be illegal and i'm not fucking joking
I'm not going to leave this in the tags cause I would like to expand on this with a situation I ran into a few months ago:
I took a Greyhound in November to my current state. I had a homeless man approach me and ask if I knew where the next bus was headed. He needed to buy a bus ticket, and was completely stranded in that city because the bus stop itself did not sell physical tickets. It required purchasing them online, and he didn't have a phone. He had cash with him to afford it, but literally could not buy a ticket because he didn't have a phone or debit card of any kind.
The bus driver allowed him to just ride for free that day so he could get to his destination (3~ hours from there), which was incredibly kind of them.
More recently, I had to download an app for my friend to use a parking meter because they got rid of letting them take change and debit cards. An app for a parking meter.
I'm currently dealing with homelessness and do you have any idea how lucky I am to have a phone that's paid for? Half the resources I go to require a phone number or email to sign up for assistance (or more ironically an address but that's besides the point).
It's shit like that, that makes me HATE how everything requires a phone, an app, an email ect to use basic shit, especially when it's not needed. It's inaccessible to so many people, and not just those going through homelessness.
Phone broke? That sucks. Is your phone dead? Too bad. Missed payment on your phone plan? Fuck you, better suck it up. Don't have data or signal? Uh oh better find somewhere with it.
It's a disadvantage at BEST to the average day to day citizen and it's absolutely exhausting. At worst I honestly think it's a symptom of fascism.
We all know what erectile dysfunction is but literally no one is ever taught what vaginismus is and it can cause people to feel extremely lost, broken, and cause people to take their own lives. Raise. Awareness.
For the uninformed, vaginismus is when the vagina painfully tightens and spasms when faced with pressure, usually from anything trying to insert into the vagina. Itâs the reason I canât wear tampons, and why many people canât have vaginal sex without severe pain.
Thereâs not a lot of treatments, and there isnât a single one that is for vaginismus exclusively - theyâre all medications or treatments to treat symptoms, but not the causes. In fact, for a long time doctors waved off vaginismus as a purely psychological disorder in cis women.
Seriously, this is so unaddressed and uncared for in medical circles. Please spread awareness, even if all itâs for is to let those who have it but donât have a name for it finally be able to understand whatâs happening to their bodies.
Certified Sex Ed Post!
Hi hello! This post is almost 10 years old and there ARE treatments for this. Vaginismus is otherwise known as pelvic hypertonia and it is a MUSCULAR condition that can be caused by many different factors including endometriosis, trauma, chronic UTIs, and connective tissue disorders.
Itâs incredibly common! And it can be treated by physiotherapy.
I know this because Iâm currently undergoing physio and although it can take months to recover, Iâm already seeing improvement. A lot of the pelvic floor exercises are available online, but if you have these symptoms please TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR and see if you can get a physio referral (or investigation for underlying causes like endometriosis).
Also, my additions to posts never get reblogged so a note to my followers: this is SUPER IMPORTANT ISSUE that affects many people and is rarely talked about. Please reblog, and please share this info with as many people as possible.
Pelvic hypertonia/vaginismus is incredibly debilitating and psychologically damaging but it CAN BE TREATED. Spread the word, and you never know who youâll be throwing a lifeline to.

I think itâs normal for people to be mad at each other sometimes even if theyâre close friends or family or intimate with each other. Like I think thatâs a normal and healthy part of relationships that can happen sometimes
âWhy were you on Mad At Me islandâ because at the time I was mad at you and yet our friendship has weathered that without trouble
I went to Mad At You island because my feelings are my problem. I needed to stomp down the beach until I could sit and watch the sunrise. I built a sandcastle and did some thinking. Then I boarded the good ship You Matter To Me and sailed it all the way to meet you on the Letâs Talk Shore of I Love You Island.
Here's how to create an in-ground greenhouse for growing 365 days a year, even in cold climates.
Underground greenhouses are helping people to take back control of their nutrition and ease farming amid the climate crisis

Have a guide on my youtube channel on building a cheap greenhouses. There's abit of a learning curve. But it's very doable.
