I cannot produce the words to describe how deeply I am disgusted by the way a lot of people talk about being nonbinary as a temporary stepping stone to becoming "full-trans."
It's "he says he's bisexual, which is what people say six months before they come out as gay" all over again.
This is obviously made messy — in the way that bi discourse is messy — by the fact that for some people non-binary identity IS a step in a transition journey, or a self-discovery journey, and that's absolutely OK. People can (and should!) experiment to understand themselves. Identity is fluid and can shift as you change or as you understand yourself better. Non-binary identity absolutely can be this for someone, in much the same way bisexuality can, and personally I think that's awesome. We shouldn't act like these things are immutable and like someone changing naturally is somehow an ethical crime.
However.
The problem is when people start to think of non-binary and bisexual identity as ONLY a stepping stone or ONLY a phase. And then inflicting that on people by talking or joking about these identities bring a stepping stone. Ironically, for those who actually are in a state of change, this can make them ignore the change that's happening for them, because they keep being accused of their identity being a phase and they don't want to reinforce that narrative.
It's stupid and complicated and at the core of everything, people shouldn't tell other people what they are and what they can be.
That's it.
Let people be enby for life. Let people flow from enby to binary trans. Let them invent new things to be.

great things are happening in my notes app
I find it so funny that having Pike wear a black undershirt with the green wrap shirt implies that, it is the proper way to wear the uniform and that Kirk is wearing it like that for slut whore reasons
I really like listening to ppls organs when I cuddle
Like y'know when you're laying on someone's chest or stomach and you start hearing the flow of fluid through their heart and the churning of their stomach and the movement of their digestive tract and the muscles recruited when they swallow
It's so intimate, and so human. Reminds me that we're flesh and blood, and that flesh and blood is a marvelous thing to be

remember when Elementary adapted the holmes stories and made Watson a woman which removed the gay subtext but then made Moriarty also a woman and gave them weird lesbian subtext. masterful technique. the never-before-seen uno yuri reverse

"So everyone's there?"
"Everybody but nobody!"

I’ve noticed an uptick in these issues occurring on ao3 recently and my boundless optimism is assuming that people just don’t know better rather than they are trying to inflate their numbers or something so two very important things to keep in mind when posting:
1. if your work is unfinished, do not mark it as complete. you will not keep readers who start it thinking it’s finished and will then want to know what’s happening next, you’ll just alienate readers (obviously this doesn’t apply to things like one-shots where you later gain inspiration to write a sequel). to prevent it from being marked as such, please check this box and fill accordingly. note that not adding a number will simply list it as chapter number/??? so it’s fine if you don’t know how many it will ultimately have.
2. if the relationship is platonic, you use the tag with the ampersand (&) and, if it’s the main focus, the gen category. if it’s romantic, you use the tag with the forward slash (/) and, if it’s the main focus, the respective category (f/f, m/m, m/f*). if you know it will ultimately be one or the other, even if it doesn’t appear straight away in the first chapter(s), you still use the correct one. here’s an example:
*there’s an option for multi and other, but these can vary by fandoms and even writers. generally speaking, multi is often used for polyamorous relationships and other is good for relationships with a non-binary/agender/etc. character.
(please tag these correctly. seeing a relationship tag in a one-shot where the whole thing is predominantly platonic can be frustrating and it’s the same the other way around. you can add in additional tags that it can be read as platonic or romantic if it can technically be read as either.)
3. just a little ✨ extra ✨ but something people aren’t always aware of: there’s a whole privacy box here. you don’t have to let anyone and everyone comment or even be able to read it. I promise that no one will judge you for marking those or for marking the comment moderation box (this means you have to approve comments before they appear). as of july 27, 2026, you can edit this at any time!
now go! write to your heart’s desire and post with updated knowledge!
