Like yes I get a central part of the story is the struggles they face alone and with each town and that’s not going away and the The Bear is not a ‘romcom’. Get that. But fans aren’t asking for a romcom (though no disrespect to romcoms btw as good ones since strife and troubles, then ultimately coming together).
It’s like 2 seasons in just going out their way to refuse even small moments of joy and connection. Like Carmy couldn’t have gone to the after party at Sydney’s really? Even if he was all in his head that still doesn’t make sense that after bothering to invite her to Ever meal, and yes getting thrown off by seeing Chef David, but then having a healing conversation, that he wouldn’t tag along to the party after with everyone else.
Or them having Sydney refuse to let Carmy go with her to the hospital, even after them getting on a better footing with each other by that point. Like yes we get Sydney is hyper self- sufficient and refuses help, but no need to over do it , we could see her being cared for him in that moment.
I think they obviously know their connection is the heart of the story, but don’t want it to ‘peak’ before they decide to do whatever with the ending, so they keep purposefully needlessly separating them, to a point it makes no sense at sometimes when you have them voicing to each other , they want to do better and work better together , but oh let’s then have them split apart here and there for no reason. Yes maybe that’s the reality of real life relationships but at some point… it’s a tv show! You have to give the viewers nuggets of payoff here and there for them to want to keep watching the show and enjoying it.
The wedding chat was cute , but it wasn’t really about them because it was wrapped up in the whole wedding episode/ Berzatto stuff. The emotional outpouring about them, finally happened in the finale, but even that was unsatisfyingly cutoff lol, when Richie barged in.

is this what’s happening? They think if the audience sees Carmy and Sydney connecting or dare I say it being happy together for more than 1.5 minutes, audiences will get bored and it will be too ‘romcom’?. I say ballyhoo to that.
A tv couple can be established and still be interesting and have problems and issues and also moments of happiness and connection that keeps an audience interested. At this point this isn’t even about them being a ‘couple’. Like just let them talk and be in a room with each other and occasionally smile again! For more than a minute, damn.
They’re the heart of the story and because there’s been so little of them interacting on a good level the last couple of seasons, that is where it feels off in parts and not the same as s1/s2
I watched Overcompensating and I can't believe I haven't seen people say Grace might actually be a lesbian. Her willingness to suggest and have a threesome with another woman. Her strained relationship with Mimi (*that alone would parallel Benny cutting off his relationship with Sammy). Not to impose this on her, cause the man is gross, but her never having orgasmed with Peter. Her loving Alice from Twilight of all people.
After I saw how she acted towards Mimi,,, I was like ohhh she’s a mean lesbian. She just is stuck in comphet rn. Imagine how cool this show would be if at first we see Benny come to terms with his sexuality and then we get to watch Grace do the same thing!!
I literally just saw that post. All the true Bear fans loved it, of course, but the magic was no where near what it was in the earlier seasons. (Much better than s3 tho) And I was so sad Bear didn’t get any awards but also did it deserve any??
i wish we were still in the days of releasing shows in dvd boxsets, and you'd get deleted scenes and behind the scenes features so that we could fully see this play out

This scene has become one of the most popular exchange between Syd and Carmy in S4 and has yielded some of the most romantic images of Sydcarmy this season in the fandom. What makes it so captivating is not just the moment of relaxation and friendliness between them, it's the way their bodies tell a story about how they feel about each other. It feels like their bodies are always speaking a different special language regardless of the subject matter.
So, Carmy is back from the kitchen after recovering from his panic attack and meeting Donna. Syd has just left Donna and finds him by the bar nursing a half full (note the symbolism here) glass of water
You can immediately see the way he draws a deep breath upon seeing her, his body relaxes and his eyes light light up. His eyes also does a quick flicker downward at this point as he quickly takes in her face and dress.
She informs him that Donna has left the party and he says "thank God" and she laughs at his response. Pretty benign conversation her but the flirty vibes between them here is so unnecessarily heavy for what they are talking about.
He checks in on her again making sure she's okay after her encounter with Donna. She reassures him she's okay and it was all fine and you can see her leaning her body forward towards him. Notice how from the shots both ways you can see they are already very close to each other but...
He takes one more small step closer to her. It's almost like his mind was going "not close enough, not close enough" . Now that he's closer, he's even more locked in and tuned in.
Even at this point you can still see him leaning forward as he talks to her, like there's still a gap he wishes to close. I also love the way he momentarily breaks away after some intense gazing to look at nothing in particular because I imagine he could melt from staring in her eyes too long lol.
At this point, Stevie approaches them and you can see as Syd turns her focus to Stevie, Carmy has a somewhat delayed reaction to that, almost like he was captivated and reluctant to break away from her gaze. You see him follow the direction of her eyes to what she's looking and seemed a little surprised by his Stevie.
After hugging Stevie, his focus immediately turns to Syd again, he wants to introduce his "friend" immediately to him. Notice that very boyish smile. This was the happiest and most relaxed he ever looked at that wedding.
They then go on to have the most couple coded interaction with Stevie. Their whole banter was so old married couple, it's crazy. The hilarious spiel about Carmy's smell and her subtle teasing, him getting slightly defensive, even playfully annoyed at her and just the general way they moved in this scene is basically a snap shot of what their lives could look like as a couple in social settings and I really think it was done on purpose for better or worse.

I need to talk about the body language in this sceneeee
I feel like i'm going crazy but like...let's break some stuff down
he is so comfortable with her in his space
his left side looks much different than his right side. one shoulder is forward, neutral, blocking - not aggressively, but just set against the rest of the room. his other shoulder? back, allowing her into his space.
but the thing is, both sides are kind of a neutral, if that makes sense. half of him is indifferent to the rest of the room, half of him is specifically welcoming syd into his space, but it's not a moment where she's being highlighted by him. he hardly notices her, or hardly reacts to her. she's busy on one side of him taking pics, he's occupied with a conversation, and it's like a given that she's there and as taken up part of his space. the way you get super familiar with a family member (wife) - someone that's part of your daily life to the point of familiarity and physical proximity.
But ALSO, since you mentioned sides, I think there's a clear pattern of Carmy physically putting himself between Sydney on one side and Whoever the Fuck Else on the other.
It starts in the walk-in when Richie calls her sweetheart.
At Friends & Family, Richie is pushing hard for him to go see Claire, and Carm says he'll go "eventually" and "leave me the fuck alone" because he's too busy to stop right then. Richie leaves simultaneously with Marcus starting to raise his voice at Sydney. He's not too busy to immediately notice someone yelling at Syd and immediately step in between Syd and Marcus, sending Marcus away to protect Sydney's peace.
At the Ever funeral, he seats Chef Sydney between himself and his brother Luca the Bear, and puts himself on the side of the table that's between her and anyone approaching from "outside."
I see the same thing here. In the choreography/blocking of the scene, he's put himself on the outside so that Sydney has at least one defensive layer between her and the anyone who enters from outside the kitchen. Sugar happens to the least threatening person in their lives, and it's no doubt totally unconscious (or random if you're a hater) but he still positions himself between wife and World. What's funny is Syd is totally in alliance with Sugar and they meet around the back to gang up on him. LOL baby you had no chance.

in Goodbye- oh in Goodbye. Carmy and Syd are literally and metaphorically facing off, but when Richie joins the conversation Carmy switches, now facing Richie with Syd at his back, like he's covering her- or protecting her. Richie is not a threat. Carmy has known him all his life, Richie has turned into one of Syd's dear friends, he's a valued coworker, but we still see physical blocking where Carmy's body is now blocking Syd into a safe place where he can physically track she's okay and he can focus mental energy on fighting with Richie. Even when things get heated between them, his body doesn't forget Syd, he's still leaning towards her. Fine. Great.
The Ever funeral. Thank you to sonoranbumblebee for what was written it's going to keep me warm at night. And, more than anything, I cannot get over that he literally physically ushered her forward, has sort of bent his body in a slight bow towards Syd and even tops this off with a soft "say hi" like she's a baby and he needs to coach her on big steps. I'M DOING PERFECTLY WELL.
and now we have something that looks like an anomoly- different from the first time we see them in the construction site. Carmy opens the door for her, ushers her in, he does let her enter the room first, but hold on- he rushes to get ahead of her, and she's now separate in the room from everyone else. CORRECT.
So, in conclusion, I'm searching for a platonic reason for these people and will be on AO3 until I get that.
