The man full on brushed of Fak and Richie to only have a heart to heart with Syd. He lowkey clocked her uneasiness with Claire also says it’s not Claire’s fault that his focus is not on the restaurant and Sydney deserves his full attention. Then proceeds to apologize and softly alleviate Sydney’s fear of failing and that he couldn’t do it without her, that he wouldn’t want to do it with out her. I’m sorry sir, you know Syd for how long before you decided this?

Was it in between her quitting and finding 300k in cans of crushed tomatoes?

And listen I totally get it from the none shippers that’ll say well he just had that talk with Jimmy and he was overwhelmed with soft opening which can be just as nerve racking as the actual opening, and he literally tells Syd that Claire is so great that it scares the shit out of him. They were just having a conversation, two coworkers under a table that needed to be tighten…

BUT

And I swear I’m doing this rewatch as unbiased as possible, so I get that they were confiding in each other as coworkers and partners, and it may have started that way but it quickly veered into soft gazing and whispered confessions of fear and affirmation-into light flirting. Ending with him giving her a fucking custom Thom Browne chef’s jacket (est. $2750!!!) which he said a friend hooked him up with. Your friend Thom Browne?!

Listen if the guy I’m seeing and getting all giddy over (who I’ll say I love in the next episode via voicemail) is spending his favor with the Thom Browne for his female colleague that he’s know for a few months, I might feel some kind of way. Lol I can over look opening a restaurant together cause that’s easier to rationalize away.

Again none shippers, I get it that you can argue that they were already under there fixing the table, seems natural that they might have continued the conversation. That the jacket, it’s respect (expensive one) and compensation or honestly an apology that he left Sydney to deal with stuff while he’s running around with Claire.

BUT

That jacket was intimate cause you need measurements for that type of custom jacket, he thought about her taste, he pulled a fucking favor for her, he saw her as equal. And I’m sorry but I’m gonna call that he decided to get her the jacket the moment she made eye contact with his jacket, not as an apology but because she wanted to feel what it would be like. Realistically it’s 5-8 weeks for custom jackets, we can say a rush job but it’s not exactly running to H&M or Zara. Also I doubt Thom Browne team was just like “yea Carmy, we got nothing else to do, ofc we’ll sort out a custom jacket and ship it over in few days” nonsense.

It was also the tone that they used, it’s the words, it’s the way he full on leans back and says he won’t let her fail. He says “you love taking care of people” because he’s noticed how she is with the team, with his sister. I dunno but if my kinda boss/colleague looked and spoke to me like that I’d worry and maybe log things for HR.

I think the table scene being in the same episode as Marcus asking Syd out is telling. The awkwardness that Syd presents about and around Claire is another not normal behavior between coworkers. In the real world, we’d 100% say, Sydney doesn’t take to Claire, why? No reason other than she’s involved with Carmy.

Sure it could seem like Syd is the one with a crush, but Carmen feels the need to clarify for her. Like he didn’t even wanna call Claire, his girlfriend (friend who is a girl) to share about Donna, Claire who can validate him because she knows the Berzatto lore. You see how giddy and excited Claire is to call him, Carmy doesn’t give that same energy back.

I know he’s anxious avoidant and repressed but he chooses to confide in Sydney asking her about her relationship with her mom…and his worry about Donna. He’s willing to give and open up with Sydney. He’s even like worried that he should’ve known about her mom being dead, like why dude? I mean I guess some people are talkers that roll up to work and share that they don’t have a mom but most people won’t share that unless they are asked.

I’m almost trying to talk myself out of being a sydcarmy shipper but I can’t get my head around it. 😂😂

Carmen is diabolical in how he behaves as a man dating someone.

The fact that Carmen made one of the blood orange hamachi ever in rebellion on the night he got the call about his brother’s suicide and it went to Sydney who fell in love with his food to the point of tea king him down at the Beef. That shed work with him at any capacity even at a sandwich shop just makes the whole of the series just chef’s kiss. It’s literally shipper material, fucking soulmate, kismet shit.

I try to be a practical shipper, of course there’s potential and chemistry and honestly sometimes that chemistry can be questionable, I’m not gonna get into some that popped into my head where even I was like ehh, but I’m rewatching the show and honestly I’m confused as why edit the show and wrote for them in the way that they did.

Like the table scene, like literally before that scene Carmy is so blasé about Claire coming to friends and family, like Neil is 100x more excited than Carm. Then this man proceeded to tell Syd in soft whisper that he wouldn’t want to do this without her, that she makes him better, that he won’t let her fail and that she’s not alone!!! (Help!)

After the whole being stuck in the fridge thing and he says he left her alone and it won’t ever happen again. That conversation could’ve had a different font and tone. But time and time again there’s a softness in Carmen in the way he talks to Sydney.

I’m a grown woman who has worked in several places, including a kitchen as a lone cook for a short time, and have been the only woman at a startup. I can tell you that I did not have these kinds of interactions with my coworkers, or coworkers that are my friends to this day. Again that conversation about never leaving her alone again would’ve sounded very different between me and my colleagues. I never hugged them with my hands in their hair, unless there was a mutual flirtation. Just saying.

Also let’s think about their physical interactions, they barely touch, there’s this almost control when it comes to physical closeness. They’ll stand next to each other, Carmy will stare Syd down like she is a rare specimen, but they hardly touch. I don’t think it’s not about respect, I think that boundary is put in place silently cause if they added the physical with their mental and emotional bond it would solidify what we the audience already picked up on.

Anyway, I’m bummed that we didn’t get a full on confirmation but I absolutely loved season 5 and the open ending and the magnificent embrace. But am I surprised that a woman of color and a white man are meant to be platonic (also if people looked into this, platonic love as seen by Plato didn’t mean none sexual, that shit was coined by a catholic scholar who made it less about physical intimacy. Plato believed that everything starts with physical and the deepest form of love is actually emotional and mental intimacy-but wtf do I know) no I’m not. lol but where’s Shonda when you need her? Like sydcarmy could be olitz level amazing!!
