English has an avoidance register used in the presence of certain respected animals, which sounds fancy until you realize it’s spelling out w-a-l-k and t-r-e-a-t in front of the dog.

All evil whales are, well, evil. So evil that if you speak their name at sea, they will hear it and home in on you. So instead you use all sorts of euphemisms for their names. Also if you try to cook their meat it literally disappears from the pot. That’s right, they’re so evil, you can’t even eat them.

They include such types as the hrosshvalur (horsewhale), with big eyes and a red mane and tail. This is probably the best known and most feared of the lot.

The raudkembingur (redcomb) is especially cruel and bloodthirsty even by illhveli standards. If you manage to escape it, it will die of frustration.

Good luck escaping the mushveli (mousewhale) though, it has legs! And will clamber onto the beach in pursuit!

Or what about death from above? The stökkull (jumper) leaps high into the air and pile-drives boats to pieces.

Meanwhile the skeljungur (shellwhale) sits in the path of boats and lets them get wrecked on its shelly hide…

… while the sverdhvalur (swordwhale) slices through boats with its dorsal fin.

The katthveli (catwhale) is relatively harmless though. It meows.

The same can’t be said of the lyngbakur (heatherback), a classic island fish that lets sailors get on its back and then dives, taking them to a watery grave.

The nauthveli (oxwhale) on the other hand specially targets cattle, attracting them into the sea with its bellow before tearing them apart.

How can you avoid all these murderous whales, like the taumafiskur (bridlefish) here? Any of a number of ways, including getting a steypireydur to help. There are substances, ranging from angelica to sheep dung and chopped fox testicles, that they find abhorrent. And you can distract them with loud noises and barrels.

Churchill killed a nazi with a long bow in battle as well. Maybe his gun jammed, but more likely he did it because when you’re a badass you do badass shit.

He was captured multiple times and tossed in concentration camps. He escaped everytime. One of his escapes wasn’t so much an escape as just an exit. He just walked on out of there. Who the fuck going to stop him after all.

He snuck out off base one night in Italy with his claymore sword because I guess he couldn’t sleep and figured capturing 42 nazi officers with only his sword would be a good way to overcome insomnia. So he did that.

He so loved his sword that he is famous for saying no soldier is properly dressed for battle without one.

Oh - and he worked as a male model too.

The purpose of this was that whenever anyone tried to threaten the democracy of the Roman republic they would throw them off the hill so that their bodies would be dashed against the rock and die. This was done even to senators that tried to fuck with the citizens etc through their position.

This was both a form of punishment of course, but was also a symbolic gesture to set a clear example, that if you try and break the people’s will, the people and land itself will break you instead.

SilenceIsGolden15 has a good collection of Keith whump and Keith angst. I’ve got a couple of them in my bookmarks, and keep an eye out for new fics from them. A couple I especially enjoyed are Rebel Yell, in which Keith becomes sick from a virus bioengineered to affect only Galra, and Kuron, where Keith winds up as Lotor’s hostage when a Blade mission goes south.

Callaeidae3 is another great source for Keith suffering. My favorites here are Your Extraction Mission Became Mine, where Krolia does not manage to get Keith back after Trugg overtakes him in the fight, and things just escalate from there, and Under the Radar, in which the Galaxy Garrison notices anomolies in Keith’s biology and he ends up captured as a lab rat (and that one has an ongoing sequel).

Cocopops1995 has a ton of fics to pick from, and highlights include A Cry in the Dark, where Hunk finds Keith locked in a trunk post-torture after going missing on a Blade mission, and The Noise That Echoes, where Keith is sound-sensitive while recovering from torture and is dealing with sensory overload.

GriffinRose is another with a wide selection of fics under their belt, and some of my personal favorites include Insomnia, where Keith is unable to sleep due to lingering paranoia from being on a planet where he was constantly on the run, Prison Bonds, where Keith and Lance are captured by aliens who feed off negative emotions, and Drowning Icarus, a modern/college AU in which Keith is in a devastating motorbike accident.

FroldGapp has a fantastic collection of fics featuring Keith hurting, especially if you’re looking for hurt of the emotional kind, and the one that I have re-read multiple times and still tear up about is Patty Cake, where Hunk sees Keith in a new light after his life is put in grave danger.

BlackFriar has two fics up for Voltron, both fantastic. Where the Wild Things Lurk, where Keith and Lance are made the prey of horrifying creatures that have overrun a ship, and Casting Shadows, which features Keith going through hell in the present while also detailing his life at the time he met Shiro, which was also chock-full of hurt.

keep_swinging has the Tallies series, featuring one fic about Keith trying to survive his imprisonment by the Galra, and a second fic about the emotional and psychological recovery following his rescue.

Bandity is excellent at making Voltron characters suffer, and some where Keith gets the short end of the stick are Connect, where he gets sick after helping aliens in a dangerous quarantine area, Darkness and Danger, where Shiro accidentally injures Keith when he wakes from a nightmare, and A Long Rain, where Keith finds himself reliving a childhood trauma during a bad storm.

Rangergirl3 is another with a vast selection of fics to choose from, so you’ll get some great content taking a stroll through that library. Of special note is the Lost Paladins series, which gives you some nice big helpings of Keith hurt/comfort and is just fun to read all around.

You may have already read In the Hands of Hatred by Haleykim84, since it’s a popular one especially among Keith fans who like to see him suffer, but if you haven’t, then you’re in for a treat. Aliens on a planet Voltron helps do not take kindly to Keith being part-Galra, and decide to take out their feelings against the Galra empire on him. This author’s other Voltron fics are excellent for hurty-Keith too, and they’ve been teasing a couple of upcoming fics on their tumblr that I’m quite excited for.

Elementary by LittleWhiteTie - Keith and Allura are captured and Keith is sick from poison. Allura has to be the one to comfort and care for Keith with some long-distance assistance from Lance.

Munacan’s Disease by SilverArson - Sickfic where Keith is suffering from a severe and mysterious disease and the team is losing their minds with worry.

Pillar in the Dark by VelkynKarma - Keith gradually grows more and more ill while on a strange mission with Hunk.

Hold Me Close by SerenePhenix - Keith is stuck out in the cold and winds up with hypothermia.

Cheek Painted Red by wordsaplenty - Keith is gravely injured but tries to keep it hidden from Shiro to avoid jeopardizing the mission.

Muzzled by Emls479 - Keith is tormented while imprisoned and has a lot of difficulty adjusting after being rescued.

Recoil/Release by Cheshyr - A bite from an alien creature heightens Keith’s primary emotion (the one he feels most), and his turns out to be fear. Things go very badly as the effects of the bite continue to escalate.

My aunt is over sixty, never married, and never, so far as I am aware, ever even had a great romance.  She dated a lot, but never clicked and now seems to have given up.  My mentor is over seventy, divorced her asshole husband more than half her life ago and has never found anyone since.

We all know women (and men) like these.  And because we know them, we know that “one day you will find someone,” is just … hogwash.  Because sometimes you just … don’t.  Or sometimes you do, but he turns out to be a cad.  Or you do and the universe rips you apart in the most unfair way possible.  And because society has us so fixated on finding “our other half” or whatever, we view these women as cautionary tales.

But … 

My aunt trains dogs.  Her schipperke is the national champion for his breed.  She spent so much of her life as a librarian, nurturing the love of books in kids, myself among them.  I ride horses because of her, and it’s one of the very few things I do that makes my soul feel at peace.

My mentor is one of the best criminal defense attorneys in her state.  She has devoted her life to fighting to ensure that everyone gets a vigorous defense.  Because of her countless people have had the opportunity to turn their lives around.  Because of her, they’ve had a life to turn around.  Because of her, the prosecution and the police in her jurisdiction are forced to behave ethically and adhere to the rule of law.  She’s still, even now fighting to abolish the death penalty.  It’s because of her that I am pursuing the life I am.

These women’s lives are not nothing.  In fact they are a whole lot of something, and it makes my heart hurt that I ever, in my dark 3 am’s, thought of their lives as something to be avoided at all costs.

So love your family, your friends, your pets, your gardens.  Love your job or your hobby or your raison d’ etre, whatever it is.  Love sunsets and the smell of rain and yourself, and don’t love these as something to do as a placeholder until the buzzing, romantic love comes, but love these as things worth loving all in themselves.

Now I’m an adult, taking care of my mother with cancer, and I STILL can’t convince myself that I have a right to be messed up. I still make up scenarios and think about how someone would wrap their arms around me after some tragic event and finally give me support.
