Recently, a youtube channel by the name "Uniquenameosaurus" published two videos about how intellectual property laws are bad things, and also released the first chapter of a fully public-domain comic. I'd be interested to hear your ideas on both.
Iâm going to put his comic up on my site and monetize it with some ComicAd banners while also posting it to my patreon and the only two things Iâm going to change is that Iâm going to change the name of the Author to Daniel Kelly and that Iâm going to change the name to Lockstuck and say it was inspired by Homestuck so that you canât easily find the original. The auction on the NFT begins at midnight.
Thatâs exactly why copyleft licences are a much better response to copyright rather than just outright putting your work into the public domain, even if you do not want to monetise it
There is perhaps a middle ground between âYou canât have Sherlock Holmes respect women because some books are still under copyright and even though the authorâs been dead for 90 years you can still be suedâ and âSelling a book is illegalâ.Â
when I sent this ask I thought you might actually watch the videos before you did a hot take but maybe that was a bit too much to expect :P
edit: maybe you did, idk, i'm really just kinda confused
So, my usual way of responding to a really long thing is to kind of go through it line-by-line or page by page, and thatâs difficult to do with a YouTube video unless I were to make a full-on response video and thatâs not really a thing that I do.
So, like, his first major argument is that in a no-IP world we can still have popular creations because of crowdfunding, and he cites Star Citizen as an example of this. Thereâs a lot of cheap shots, like how his choice of example is Star Citizen (a game famous for not existing), or how he says that âpopularâ things can get made and doesnât seem to think about this will change art (by meaning only stuff that plays it safe or appeals to a trend can get made, and that you have to know exactly what youâre making before you make it and canât âfind the funâ etc etc etc), but the bigger issue is that none of the examples he cites as the ways no-IP works in the real world are possible under no-IP. Kickstarter is often a form of pre-sale, where you back the game and get a copy. That trade doesnât function if the game is free and canât be restricted. Neither is Patreon where you get comic pages early or get secret bonus content etc., and Star Citizen....I mean, for fuckâs sake Star Citizen raises absurd amounts of money by selling rich libertarians spaceships that Star Citizen not only owns, but can delete/nerf/whatever at any time, and that this funding model is a huge part of why Star Citizen is so famously unfinished. Star Citizen is Giga-IP.
But this dude mostly talks about how this would change the way art is made my kind of alluding that itâll get rid of the SJWs on or whatever (honestly the thumbnail for the  âWhy Pewdiepie is the most underrated streamerâ video on his YouTube page is probably enough to know what heâs going to say in the video right there) , and how artists will be able to get popular âfixingâ other peopleâs art instead of making their own.Â
The entire video is very myopically focused on how going no-IP will make popular existing franchises have cool fanfiction. And the problem heâs focused on solving is so fucking myopic. The big upside for No IP is that anyone can make a Star Wars movie. But - and this is very important - anyone can make a Star Wars movie right now. You just canât call it Star Wars.Â
Roger Corman made a Star Wars movie
There was a Star Wars TV show that became a franchise in its own right.Â
Even Toei made a Star Wars, with literal Samurai in it!Â
Star Wars: Giant Robot Edition.
You want to make a Street Fighter game with more blood?Â
You can do that!Â
You wanna go the other way, and make a My Little Pony fighting game?
You can do that!Â
Wanna make a Star Trek show based entirely on the popularity of its showrunner letting him make a weird passion project?
Oh fuck!Â
And, like, this doesnât mean that IP law in the United States doesnât suck and that corporations holding IP rights forever and ever and ever is a good thing, it really isnât and copyright duration needs to be dramatically reduced. But if you you think IP law is the reason you donât like certain things, watch less Pewdiepie and read a book. Then maybe your next 45 minute video about a policy change will be able to cite a single fucking source on literally anything at any point.
But hey, the gimmick is clearly working for the dude. Iâm glad for him that heâs earning $800/month of Patreon to not make a webcomic until he hits $3200/mo. Respect the hustle. Get that bread.Â
this was a triumph(?)

6 hour long fight at this yearâs Tolkien Historical Society Conference about whether Middle Earth has bees, before I reminded everyone that the Rohirrim had mead halls, which means they had honey, which means thereâs bees. Cruel choices #137: you must consume one - and only one - of the following pieces of media.
1. Sailor Moon retold in the style of a 19th Century Russian philosophical novel.
2. The Brothers Karamazov retold in the style of a magical girl anime.
âOur very existence proves there is a peak,â Mars spat, the wind-swept snow no deterrent to her clad in naught but the Sailor uniform as she was. âMan need not concern itself with matters of godhood. We are gods given flesh.â
âIt is precisely because of what we are that they cannot rest.â Mercury replied. âOne cannot and must not embrace egoism. If we fall, who then will they turn to? Who then will care for what mankind has wrought? Only mankind itself.â
Then from two alleys over there came not so much a cry but a sound, a resolute plea to the skies above not for help, but for guarantee of vengeance. The earnest note struck chords within Mars and Mercury, as if it had been an answer to both of their sides; and yet, it was distinctly not.
âCorrupting the minds of the people with false nationalism where there should be nothing but love of all man, exemplifying godhood as nothing more than superiority to others instead of preaching it as empathy and spilling my borscht⊠For that, I cannot forgive you! In the name of the moon, I will punish you!â

@jstor I blame you.
I am slowly teaching libertarians to want to pay their taxes, and that is hilarious to me.
