And I was going to give them the benefit of doubt, since I don't know much about the climate in Northern Africa, aside from Morroco and Egypt, which seem like really hot places, so you know, maybe it's normal there?

all across the continent of Africa, ice has been melting and not coming back. the ice caps and glaciers of every continent are vitally important for maintaining a balanced climate, but as you can see from the above image, even 10-20 years ago the ice deposits on Kilimanjaro and the Rwenzori mountains had shrunk to dangerous levels.

this is Kilimanjaro in 2023. it's only getting worse as climate change continues to ravage the globe.

because so much climate science is focused on europe and the americas, far too few know the extent of the damage that has been done to Africa by the corporations driving climate change. time and time again, the struggles across the African continent are minimised or outright ignored, because as OP said, people believe it to be a hot continent.

As they get closer, Alex rolls her window down, and Lucy has to hold Gurgi back from climbing onto Alex’s lap and sticking her head out of it. Alex laughs. She honks the horn and waves out the window.

Maggie looks up, her face completely hidden by the distance and the shade of her hat, then waves back after a few moments before going back to her task.

Alex rolls her window back up.

“She’ll meet us at the house when she’s done,” she says.

The house isn’t much further, but they’ve lost sight of Maggie in the rearview by the time Alex turns onto the long driveway.

The driveway is lined with large pines, larger than could be used for Christmas trees anywhere other than Rockefeller Center. In the spaces between the trees the fields spread out. To one side, more trees. To the other, much smaller leafy crops Lucy can’t identify.

A small cabin sits snuggled into the trees, a ‘Pay here’ sign visible through the window. A fence connects the cabin to a nearby barn, and an alpaca within watches the car roll by.

I've noticed this huge trend where creators on tiktok and tumblr who will be explaining how to use Archive Of Our Own to new users and they always say "and make sure to scroll down and click completed only" or how people will go out of their way to mention they only read completed fics 'because they were traumatized when they forgot to check the dates and didn't realize this fic hadn't been updated since 2012'.

The thing is - I think by not engaging with and/or actively avoiding writer's WIPs readers are potentially adding to the aggregate of abandoned works. Now this obviously isn't the case for all abandoned fics, anything from major life events, to loss of interest, to getting busy can be a reason for a fic getting abandoned - but at least on some level I just know that writers are quitting while they're ahead when they aren't garnering any response or feedback because reading WIPs has become unpopular. If you're worried about reading something that hasn't been updated since 2012 then you can use the date updated function to sort out old fics.
