For anyone who wants a free pose-able human reference for drawing
The other day I came across this awesome program by accident (I donât even remember what I was actually searching for, but on the several times Iâve looked for a program like this Iâve had no luck). Itâs cool enough that I wanted to share it.
Itâs called DesignDoll (website here) and itâs a program that lets you shape and pose a human figure pretty much however you want.
Thereâs a trial version with no expiration date that can be downloaded for free, as well as the âpro licenseâ version priced at $79. Iâve only had the free version for two days so far, so Iâm not an expert and I havenât figured out all of the features yet, but Iâve got the basics down. The websiteâs tutorials are actually pretty helpful for the basics, as well.Â
Hereâs the page for download, which has a list of the features available in both versions.
There are three features the free version doesnât have:
Canât save OBJ files for export
Canât download models and poses from Doll Atelier (a sharing site for users; note that the site is in Japanese, though)
It canât load saved files
The third one means that if you make a pose, save it, and close the program, you canât load that pose/modified model later. You have to start with the default model. I found that out when I tried to load a file from the day before (this is why reading is importantâŚ). Whether saving your modifications (and downloading models and poses) is worth $80 is up to you.Â
But, the default model is pretty nice and honestly if all youâre looking for is a basic pose reference it should work fairly well as it is. Hereâs what it looks like:
Thereâs a pose tag that lets you drag each joint into place and rotate body parts. The torso and waist can be twisted separately, and it seems like everything pretty much follows the range of movement it would have on an actual human.
Even the entire shoulder area is actually movable along with the joint! See, like how the scapular area of the back raises with the arm:
The morphing tag is one of the coolest features, in my opinion. It lets you pick and choose from a library of pre-set forms for the head, chest, arms, legs, etc. It has some more realistic body shapes in addition to more anime-like ones. Donât like the options there? Mix a few to get what you want! Each option has a slider that lets you blend as much or as little as you want into the design.Â
So you, too, can create beautiful things like kawaii Muscle-chan!!
The scale tag lets you mess with the proportions and connection points of different joints. This feature combined with the morphing feature not only allows more body shape variations, but it also means that you can do things like make a more digitigrade model if you want. (The feet only have an ankle joint, but for regular human poses thatâs all that you really need, so whatever.)
Or you can make a weird chubby alien-like thing with giant hands and balloon tiddies if thatâs more your thing.
The ability to pose hands to the extent it allows is far more than I could have hoped for from a free program. Seriously, you can change the position of each finger joint individually, as well as how spread out the fingers are from each other. Each crease on the diagram below is a point of movement, and the circles are for spread between fingers.Â
And to make it a bit more convenient, thereâs a library of pre-set hand poses you can pick from as well, and then change the pose from that if you like.Â
In both versions, you can also import OBJ files from other places for the model to hold, like if you wanted to have them hold a sword or something.
Basically, this program is awesome and free and you should totally check it out if you want a good program for creating pose references.
I just wanted to add a little more to this. If you have trouble figuring out how light sources work in your drawings this also allows you to choose where to have a light source.
That shaded ball on the left is your light source. You can see how moving the point changed the shadow cast.
Oh and all those other nifty looking things in that bottom bar there, yeah itâs what you think. You can change the model color to one of these presets or even customize your own palette.
Plus for all you lovely people who want something a little more simplified to use as a pose reference
You can turn your model into the classic wire frame.
Why reblog this? Because for more visual creators, this will be like the lumberjack discovering chainsaws. âReblog to save livesâ as the saying goes.
Iâm sure this has made some rounds, but Iâm gonna drop it here, anyway, for folks that might need it.

A Collection of Japanese Graphic Design
We love finding collections of vintage graphic design, book covers, and illustrations. Ryan Hageman, has dedicated his blog Gura Fiku to putting together a collection of visual research surveying the history of graphic design in Japan. Go check out Gura Fiku for more, but here is a selection of a few of our favorites⌠(in Juxtapoz Magazine)

This is the JataĂ, a bee native to Brazil. Like all bees native to Brazil, she has no stinger and is super chill (nowadays we have bees with stingers, but they all came from Europe and Africa).
They like to build their hives inside nooks in solid rock or concrete and make a distinctive tube-like entrance that is carefully guarded against predators.
Theyâre really tiny and arenât at all bothered by humans getting close to their hive so long as we leave them alone - my grandma had a hive on one of the walls in her yard for over 25 years, right by the narrow staircase that went up to the second level of the house where my gran lived (my cousin lived on the bottom half) and those gals gave zero fucks that a bunch of pinkish giants would stomp by their doorway on a regular basis.
I could stick my face right by their hive to watch them from close up and so long as I didnât disrupt traffic absolutely no fucks were ever given.

It's an endlessly entertaining portal touching on everything from modern Japanese streetwear to the clothes worn at Versailles.
âWe Wear Cultureâ is a collaboration between Google and more than 180 museums, schools, fashion institutions, and other organizations from all parts of the globe. Itâs part of Googleâs Arts & Culture platform, which is digitizing the worldâs cultural treasures, and functions as a searchable guide to a collective archive of some 30,000 fashion pieces that puts âthree millennia of fashion at your fingertips,â Google says.
But it isnât just a database. Google has worked with curators to create more than 450 exhibits on different topicsâsay, how the cheongsam changed the way Chinese women dressâmaking the site an endlessly entertaining, educational portal filled with stunning imagery touching on everything from modern Japanese streetwear to the clothes worn at the court of Versailles.
i can already tell this has made writing for historical fandoms â the worst part of which, for me, is absofuckinglutely hands-down the clothing â much easier.Â

wanna know the best thing about these trilobite beetles?
these are all ladies.Â
males look like every other beetle out there, but are the same species. it was a huge mystery for the longest time what the hell a male even looked like, or if there even were males, until they issued a money reward and someone brought in a mating pair. and they couldnât believe that they were even of the same species because of how different they look.
we have an irl species of giant monstrous ladies and tiny dainty plain males

TAXES FOR FREELANCERS, 101
In the past, Iâve gotten some questions about the business of illustration & about how taxes work. Filing taxes is a bummer, but it sucks even more when you have no idea what youâre doing. After progressing from Completely Clueless to Somewhat Experienced* during the past 5 years of doing my own taxes, I thought iâd write (& illustrate!) a generalized rundown. Hereâs hoping it might provide some insight for the curious!
*This info is from my own experience and I am by NO means a tax professional! Iâm simplifying a lot of the info here, so please donât take my word as lawâcheck out the specifics on the IRS website instead.
First, the basics: If you earn an income, you have to pay income taxes, and Uncle Sam has a âpay as you goâ system. If you want to avoid a pricey penalty, you are expected to pay taxes throughout the year as you earn income, not all at once when you file your income tax return. There are 2 ways this happens:
1. For people who receive regular paychecks from an employer, your employer will withhold a certain amount from your paycheck to pay for federal (and state) income taxesâyou fill out a W-4 form when youâre hired, which determines how much they withhold for you. Easy-peasy!
2. If youâre a freelancer, you donât have a regular paycheck or a regular employer to withhold your taxes for you, so you have to pay quarterly Estimated Taxes yourself. Estimated taxes cover your income tax and self employment tax*, for both the federal govât and your state govât (if applicable).
*Yesâas a freelancer, you not only have to pay income tax, but you also pay self employment tax! (basically, a tax that goes to Social Security/Medicare)
Iâm just going to focus on federal estimated taxes first:
If youâre a freelancer, the trick is to make sure you pay enough in estimated taxes throughout the year to avoid the underpayment penalty. You will avoid the penalty if you:
Owe less than $1000 in taxes after subtracting withholding and credits OR (A)Have paid at least 90% of the tax amount owed for the current year, or (B) have paid at least 100% of the tax shown on last yearâs return â whichever is smaller.
So letâs break down these scenarios a bit: If youâre a student just graduating from school and you havenât done many freelance jobs (i.e. probably making less than $8,000 in taxable income from freelance), itâs likely that you donât have to pay estimated taxes, because youâll probably owe less than $1000 in federal taxes from your freelance work. So donât sweat it!
If it does look like you will owe $1000 or more in taxes, you have 2 choices for calculating how much to pay in estimated taxesâthe aforementioned (A) or (B). (A) Make sure you pay at least 90% of the tax amount that will be owed for the current year. OR (B) Make sure you pay at least 100% of the tax shown on last yearâs return.
Thereâs an estimated tax worksheet that you can use to help figure out either one.
Since my freelance income fluctuates and Iâm lazy enough that I donât like trying to predict how much tax I will owe for the upcoming year (and adjust quarterly payments if needed), I prefer to just use option (B).
That means that I can just pay an equal amount each quarter, and make sure all 4 estimated tax payments add up to the tax amount I paid for last yearâs return (or more). So, for instance, if I owed $7000 total in federal taxes for 2012, I wonât be penalized for underpayment if I pay at least $1750 each quarter ($7000 total) for my 2013 federal estimated taxesâregardless of whether I owe more taxes in 2013 or not. If I earned a higher income in 2013 than in 2012 and didnât pay enough estimated taxes to cover it all, Iâd still have to pay the difference at tax time, but at least I wouldnât have to pay the underpayment penalty! Not too difficult, so long as you have enough in your bank account, but tricky to figure out at first!
All of this information also generally applies to state estimated tax payments, though the specific numbers and percentages can change and a few states donât charge income tax at all. In most states, you have to pay a state income tax as well as a federal income tax, so I pay quarterly estimated tax payments to the federal government, as well as quarterly estimated tax payments to Maryland, my state of residence.
Federal estimated taxes are handled on Federal Form 1040-ES, but you can fill out the form and schedule your payments online for free at https://www.eftps.gov/eftps/
Your state will also likely have a free online tax system you can use.
Some tax filing methods: -Just use a tax professional! Seriously, especially if this is new to you and you donât have any outside help. I know plenty of professional illustrators that use one. Better than messing things up and getting in trouble with the IRS.
-Use online tax software that helps to walk you through the tax experience and will do all the calculations for you, like TurboTax, TaxAct, etc. (I use TaxAct) They usually have a free version for your federal returns well as pay options, (which may include your state return as well). They will also let you schedule your federal estimated taxes, which I take advantage of. I recommend having a tax-savvy friend or relative you can call if you get stuck! I owe huge debts of gratitude to my own tax-savvy relatives that patiently answered questions & put me on the right track.
OR
-Print out all the pertinent tax forms and worksheets, start to fill them out by hand, alone in your paper-strewn room, and then jump out the window in wild frustration when you canât figure out all the jargon and your math skills arenât as good as they used to be.
(not recommended)
âHappyâ taxing, everyone!
âtis the season! I thought Iâd reblog this again, seeing as how Iâm doing my taxes this week (I think Iâm gonna try out TurboTax this year to compare!) I already spent a couple hours inputting info that I think I now have to delete and re-do againâŚso it goes. Best of luck with your taxes! (or congrats if you already did them!)
