just so yall know
art block is your brain telling you to do studies.
draw a still life. practice some poses. sketch some naked people. do a color study. try out a different technique on a basic shape.
art block doesnt stop you from drawing, it stops you from making your drawings look the way you want them to. and thats because you need to push your skills to the next level so you can preform at that standard
think of it as level grinding for your next work.
As a scientific illustrator- this is 100% true and going to review your basics will fix it every goddamn time.Ā Not only does it keep your skills sharp, when youāre not emotionally invested in the final product of a piece, you relax and your brain makes more/better art juice for you.Ā So, when you get back to that big/important piece?Ā Youāll know what to do and how to do it.
Nothing in nature blooms all year round.Ā Rest, and take care of yourself.
another important thing to remember is 1) u can pick up any hobby at any point in ur life and get outstandingly good at it & 2) the project u've been working on & aren't pleased w the current outcome so far will not be your last. u will draw/crochet/paint/sculpt/write another piece, and another, and you will have many chances to be fully content w your craft. so you should cherish the joy of making art instead of worrying ab the results & think ab how lovely it is that we're all vessels for artistry and we can share the divine act of creation!!!!!

My current job has me working with children, which is kind of a weird shock after years in environments where aĀ āyoungā patient is 40 years old. Ā Hereās my impressions so far:
Birth - 1 year: Essentially a small cute animal. Ā Handle accordingly; gently and affectionately, but relying heavily on the caregivers and with no real expectation of cooperation.
Age 1 - 2: Hates you. Ā Hates you so much. Ā You can smile, you can coo, you can attempt to soothe; they hate you anyway, because youāre a stranger and youāre scary and youāre touching them. Ā Thereās no winning this so just get it over with as quickly and non-traumatically as possible.
Age 3 - 5: Nervous around medical things, but possible to soothe. Ā Easily upset, but also easily distracted from the thing that upset them. Ā Smartphone cartoons andĀ āwho wants a sticker?!!?!?ā are key management techniques.
Age 6 - 10: Really cool, actually. Ā I did not realize kids were this cool. Ā Around this age they tend to be fairly outgoing, and super curious and eager to learn. Ā Absolutely do not babytalk; instead, flatter them with how grown-up they are, teach them some Fun Gross Medical Facts, and introduce potentially frightening experiences withĀ āhey, you want to see something really cool?ā
Age 11 - 14: Extremely variable.  Can be very childish or very mature, or rapidly switch from one mode to the other.  At this point you can almost treat them as an adult, just⦠a really sensitive and unpredictable adult.  Do not, under any circumstances, offer stickers.  (But they might grab one out of the bin anyway.)
Age 15 - 18: Basically an adult with severely limited life experience. Ā Treat as an adult who needs a little extra education with their care. Ā Keep parents out of the room as much as possible, unless the kid wants them there. Ā At this point you can go ahead and offer stickers again, because theyāll probably think itās funny. Ā And theyāll want one. Ā Deep down, everyone wants a sticker.
This is also a pretty excellent guide to writingĀ kids of various ages

i hate this weird trend in fandom where subtext is seen as a Bad Thing and is only done if the creators are too cowardly to commit to showing something. i hate to break it to you but nuance and layers are what make stories interesting, if you have no subtext then you have a very flat story
sometimes things are subtext because they donāt quite fit the tone of the story, or because the story isnāt about that (and if they showed it outright they would have to take time to explore it), or sometimes the characters arenāt ready to face it, or sometimes subtext is just the right choice for this specific story, or SOMETIMES itās just fun and interesting to have underlying themes and implications!!!!
also just because itās subtext doesnāt mean itās not deliberate or not meant to be part of the story. āwell if they WANTED it to be canon they shouldāve SAID SOā some of us can understand implications. some of us enjoy thinking about the media we consume and donāt just want everything handed to us on a silver platter. āwow i canāt believe the writers didnāt even realize what this impliesā im going to beat you to death with hammers
Random writing thought: the best stories are often the ones that only you could have written ā but also the ones that you could only write at this one moment.
I couldn't write All the Birds in the Sky from scratch now if I tried. But the me of 2013 couldn't have written The Prodigal Mother either.
When people ask if I'd change anything about a book I've already written, I want to explain to them that I'm not the person who wrote that book any longer, and even if I tried right now I'd write a different one. Everything you make as a writer* is a combination of what you want to say and who you are at the time you are telling that story.
*possibly also as an artist or as a human being

āplot armorā is so funny as an idea. I canāt believe the author used this character in a thematically coherent way instead of killing them off randomly in the fourth chapterā¦
At some point, I need to have a rant about how too many people judge fiction on how ārealisticā it is first and foremost, with how it actually works as a story being an afterthought⦠if it gets thought about at all.
I had something longer written in response, but Tumblr ate my draft.
Basically, āPlot Armorā isnāt when a character wonāt die. āPlot Armorā is when the stakes of a scene are blunted because you know the author wonāt pull the trigger. Itās when the author sets up a consequence in the case of failure, but theyāre not willing to make that consequence happen, so failure canāt happen.
The solution is, when writing, pick consequences that youād allow to happen. Donāt make the sum total of the stakes of the heroās second fight that they might die; we all know they wonāt. Instead, put something at risk that the audience believes could be lost - the fate of a relationship, or a prized possession, perhaps.
(Crucially, Plot Armor only applies if itās clear that something wonāt happen on the first viewing - if you know what happens already, something not happening isnāt Plot Armor.)
I WOULD PAY TEN TIMES AS MUCH FOR CHOCOLATE IF IT MEANT REDUCING THE AMOUNT OF SLAVES IN THE WORLD? HOW IS THIS ANY KIND OF PROBLEM.Ā
good news, you can! the companyās called Tonyās Chocolonely and their entire purpose is to make slave-free chocolate and reform the chocolate industry.

Whole Foods carries it. If you donāt want to support an Amazon-owned company, World Market carries it. You can also buy it directly from the company.Ā
Itās the best chocolate Iāve ever hadĀ and itās 100% slave free. Tonyās Chocolonely works really hard to push for transparency within the chocolate industry and actually has and is following an action plan to eliminate slavery within cocoa production. Theyāre good people who make good chocolate.

Are you alright, honey? You've barely put your blorbo in situations
Okay but back when I could afford a therapy my psychiatrist asked if I had written any fanfiction or planned any out in my head, and I was "nah, not really." And she nodded and looked down at her notes and was like "so how do you feel about possibly trying Zoloft?"
I started laughing and she was like "I know it sounds funny but it's been six months without you engaging in your favorite hobby and that's a sign the depression is getting to a point where we might why try some treatments with meds in addition to therapy."
So like. yeah.

thereās this interesting tendency that especially young ppl have when it comes to art where they want to āconsumeā art by women, lgbt ppl, poc, to make themselves more feminist, anti-racist, etc, and then when they discover these artists have flaws too, that they arenāt perfect representatives of the social movement thatās being projected onto them, they donāt know what to do with that so instead of engaging with these new perspectives they return to art by straight white men who avoid saying something wrong on these topics by simply not speaking of them at all
Most targets of ācancel cultureā are women and people of color for this reason.
Thereās also something very paternalistic about judging art from anyone who isnāt a white man by how flawless and ānon-problematicā the representation is in their art while we judge (mostly white, mostly western) men by the metric of good prose, good characterisation, themes and narrative for example, when it comes to books. It feels as if the āuniversalā work is reserved for them, while everyone else gets to sit at the kids table and get an award for stuff like ābook with most likeable bisexual characterā.
