to anyone in the areas impacted by the wildfire smoke, my #1 biggest piece of advice as someone whos been dealing with wildfire smoke in the NW united states for years, is build yourself a Corsi-Rosenthal Cube
they perform as well as expensive HEPA air cleaners, and are comparatively VERY inexpensive. all you need is a box fan, 4 air filters, a piece of cardboard, and some duct tape!!!!
i think it took us maybe a half hour to put ours together, if that, and we replace the filters every 3 months. it's really made a HUGE difference, both when the air quality is bad, but also with our allergies
Saw these easy to read instructions on Twitter. Stay safe đ
Also just a handy, DIY air filter in general, if a bit bulky. For a less bulky and cheaper (but also less effective) solution, you can simply tape one filter to the fan, cut a shroud if you'd like.
just FYI, this is quite literally what the climate scientists at my work who specialized in wildfire smoke impacts recommend. it works great, it's cheap to make, and it will make a noticeable impact on your air quality.
i have asthma & keep one of these running in my room perpetually. after I set it up the difference in my sleep quality was pretty much night and day. Dont waste your time on proprietary air filters; SIMPLY bust out the duct tape
This is like lingerie for electronics

Collins is gone.
Namaygoosisagagun First Nation/Collins has burned to the ground. The entire community is nothing but ashes after being quickly consumed by wildfires. They did not have any support from emergency services, and no one offered aid. The community saved themselves by escaping into boats because no one came.
Mishkeegogamang and Cat Lake have lost power. Families are ending up in shelters with nothing. Armstrong, Lac La Croix, Whitesand, Gull Bay, Lac des Mille Lacs are currently in the fires path and all members are being evacuated.
All this loss, all this devastation, and it was entirely preventable.
After steadily underfunding wildland firefighting and purposefully excluding Indigenous wildland firefighters and Indigenous wildfire organizations from wildfire operations, firefighter training, decisionmaking, and resource exchanges, in 2025, Doug Ford slashed the forest firefighting budget.
It's hard to ignore his decision to cut funding and leave us out of adequate fire training (even though we've lived with forest fires for thousands of yearsâfar longer than settlers have been in Canadaâand made sure fires like the ones we're all seeing today were prevented through kinisitotÄn) when, despite making up less than 5% of the population, we account for 42% percent of all wildfire evacuations in Canada.
And when we are successfully evacuated, we face discrimination and racismâlike Kashechewanâbecause it's always been easier to blame us than it is to blame the true culprit: denialism, corportate greed, and colonization.
The people of Collins and every other impacted community deserve better.
Right now, the AFN is currently accepting donations to help Collins First Nation. If you're able to, please consider donating.
ONWA (Ontario Native Women's Association) is another great place to donate to. They have outreach vans going to motels and inns and offering food, water, resources, and cultural support to those impacted by the wildfires.
Other places to consider donating to are Mikinakoos Emergency Fund, Red Cross, True North Aid, Indigenous Climate Action. You can also send donations directly to Whitesand First Nation via e-transfer ([email protected]) and they request that you add your full name in the e-transfer comment section to receive a tax receipt.
*Before sending money, verify that the appeal appears on an official First Nation, Tribal Council or registered charity channel.
If you can't offer financial support, please consider donating items of need. Moontime Connections is currently accepting drop-off donations. If you live in the Thunder Bay area, Namaygoosisagagun Health Office is also taking in donations! They can also bemailed to Superior Inn Hotel & Conference Centre at 555 West Arthur Street, Thunder Bay, ON, P7E 5P8.
items needed are: food, diapers, medical masks, menâs and womenâs joggers (all sizes), childrenâs clothing (newborn to size 14), childrenâs shoes, summer clothing, menâs clothing, toiletries (lotion, Vaseline, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant, etc.), strollers, adult depends-all sizes, dog & cat food

Fish of the Day
Happy Monday, everybody! Today's fish of the day is the gummy shark!Â
The gummy shark, also known as the Australian smooth hound, smooth dog shark, sweet William, or scientific name Mustelus antarcticus, are a common catshark around Australia. Found in and around the Southern seas, along the shallow continental shelf, from the depths of 80-350 meters along the sea bed. Although female shark groups spend their days in deeper waters than male shark groups. These sharks are named due to the pavement shaped teeth, made up of many flat plate-like teeth that make them appear toothless, and the more regional name of sweet William coming from the rank smell these sharks emit once removed from water. However, recent research surrounding these sharks shows they may be a subpopulation of the nearby Eastern spotted gummy shark (Mustelus walkeri).
The flat teeth of these sharks are perfectly adapted to grab and crush shelled and unshelled prey, such as cephalopods, crustaceans, and bony fish. This prey allows these sharks to get as large as 176cm (70in) in females, and 157cm (62) in males! However, this size allows predation from other sharks, particularly broadnose and sevengill sharks. To evade predation, these sharks are colored to blend into the sandy sea bed, and travel close to the shore to eat at night, spending the day hidden in caves, or under sand.Â
These sharks aggregate into groups based on sex and size, where female shark groups are found further to the West and Southwestern coast of Australia in prime breeding and feeding areas. Males will remain in the Southeastern territories, migrating west for the summer breeding season. After successful breeding occurs, female sharks can incubate litters of anywhere from 14-57 pups at a time, which they will gestate 11-12 months before birth, as the gummy shark is ovoviviparous. These pups will then be cared for by the female sharks, using the Southwestern slope of Australia as a nursery, where the male pups will depart only at sexual maturity in 4-5 years. After this, these sharks will live upwards of 16 years, with female sharks going their entire lives, where amle sharks stop gaining length at around 10 years of age. These sharks are currently facing very minimal threats, and have healthy populations, being considered a least concern animal to conservation.Â
That's the gummy shark everybody! I hope everyone enjoyed learning about today's fish, and be ready for more soon!Â

hot take comments like "I hope I get cyclosporiasis I want to lose 10 lbs" are not only obvious fatphobia but also part of mass illness normalization that has been an ongoing effort since 2020 to minimize the dangers of disease and infections
They want to act like high levels of sickness whether it be airborne or foodborne are normal and not the responsibility of agencies like public health or food safety regulation so they can get away with dismantling them.
"No one's going to die," they say. Factually incorrect and honestly we don't have good data on what a society that's normalized explosive diarrhea looks like, but y'all have an idea what the cholera era looked like, right?
Mass disease is not normal and preventable. One of the number one causes is how large agricultural companies refuse to treat their employees like humans: people picking the food you eat don't have bathrooms, so when they get sick, they're left with a choice to shit their pants and get back to work or squat in the field and get back to work. I know which I'd choose in their shoes...
Mass illness isn't just a public health issue, it's a workers' rights issue and more!
Vol. 1 Chapter 15 of Kapital:
Machine and Modern Industry
Excerpt from Section 9: The Factory Acts. Sanitary and Educational Clauses of the same. Their General Extension in the Workplace.
âWhat could possibly show better the character of the capitalist mode of production, than the necessity that exists for forcing upon it, by Acts of Parliament, the simplest appliances for maintaining cleanliness and health? In the potteries the Factory Act of 1864 âhas whitewashed and cleansed upwards of 200 workshops, after a period of abstinence from any such cleaning, in many cases of 20 years, and in some, entirely,â (this is the âabstinenceâ of the capitalist!) âin which were employed 27,800 artisans, hitherto breathing through protracted days and often nights of labour, a mephitic atmosphere, and which rendered an otherwise comparatively innocuous occupation, pregnant with disease and death. The Act has improved the ventilation very much.â [214]
At the same time, this portion of the Act strikingly shows that the capitalist mode of production, owing to its very nature, excludes all rational improvement beyond a certain point. It has been stated over and over again that the English doctors are unanimous in declaring that where the work is continuous, 500 cubic feet is the very least space that should be allowed for each person. Now, if the Factory Acts, owing to their compulsory provisions, indirectly hasten on the conversion of small workshops into factories, thus indirectly attacking the proprietary rights of the smaller capitalists, and assuring a monopoly to the great ones, so, if it were made obligatory to provide the proper space for each workman in every workshop, thousands of small employers would, at one full swoop, be expropriated directly!
The very root of the capitalist mode of production, i.e., the self-expansion of all capital, large or small, by means of the âfreeâ purchase and consumption of labour-power, would be attacked. Factory legislation is therefore brought to a deadlock before these 500 cubic feet of breathing space. The sanitary officers, the industrial inquiry commissioners, the factory inspectors, all harp, over and over again, upon the necessity for those 500 cubic feet, and upon the impossibility of wringing them out of capital. They thus, in fact, declare that consumption and other lung diseases among the workpeople are necessary conditions to the existence of capital. [215]
