as much as i poke fun at “tumblr prose,” i will acknowledge that sometimes when you’re writing and you’re really in the groove, you’re really feeling yourself, you’re on your capital-a Author shit, and you write a line that makes you go, “oh yeah, this is the Good Shit. this is so Subtle and Says So Much. this is Characterization. this is Themes and Motifs. you could write a whole essay about this one line. the master of the craft strikes again!” and then a month or whatever later when you’re editing you read over it again with post-write clarity and you realize you wrote some real “people die when they’re killed” bullshit

I’m not trying to turn your kids trans; that’s stupid. I’m trying to turn them into socialists.

There's a recurring online tendency to aestheticize consensus itself. The imagined future village is full of emotionally compatible people who enjoy communal gardening, conflict resolution circles, acoustic folk music, mutual aid potlucks, and repairing bicycles together at sunset. Which is nice for the people who genuinely enjoy that lifestyle. But plenty of humans are solitary, prickly, obsessive, urban, nocturnal, sensory-seeking, technologically attached, contrarian, novelty-seeking, private, or just plain difficult. Those people do not evaporate after the revolution. They do not get Left Behind while you are Raptured into the Utopia. They become your neighbors.

Especially when certain demographics of people (cough cough black and brown) regardless of their actual traits, likes, dislikes and personalities are automatically labelled as difficult or antisocial or prickly due to The Racism and then promptly excluded from said communities for, as they say, Ruining The Vibe

Mike Flannagan’s Sharp Objects Pitch: A reporter goes back to her hometown to investigate a murder and must stay with her estranged mother. Though initially hesitant, the reporter also builds the foundation of a new relationship with her youngest sister, the curious young Amma. Despite Amma’s happy childhood, she is now being haunted by the same ghost. The reporter and her mother must band together to save little Amma before it’s too late. In the end their mother sacrifices her own life to save them both and they see a vision of her dressed as Persephone keeping the ghost girls safe even in death, because a mother’s love is eternal
