WHY?!? Why do you say these things?? Look, I understand you think birds are lesser pets than cats and dogs, but when someone comes up to you and says “I have a poodle!” you aren’t going to say “that’s nice, I had one too and it got hit by a car” or “we gave it to a shelter because it lived longer than we wanted it to.

Why do we have a double standard for birds and other exotics, and why do people feel so comfortable expressing that double standard to someone who clearly cares about their feathered pets?

Animal rights is giving them the same rights as humans. It’s based on what ill-informed people think animals need and not what they actually need. For example, sanctuaries run by people who believe in animal rights often keep animals alive that are suffering terribly with deformities or injuries. They can’t or wont see that suffering because they view the animals from a human perspective. They imagine how they would feel and cope in that situation and assume the animal feels the same. This leads to animals being kept alive who are miserable and in pain and cannot understand their situation.

Animal rights would also ban things like zoos who do huge amount of conservation work. Without them many more species would go extinct. That’s not just bad for those species, but every other species connected in the ecosystem. Farming and hunting animals for food would also be banned. This would mean huge problems with overpopulation and habitat destruction. For humans it would mean a lot of suffering too. Many people need meat for health and dietary reasons, because they cannot afford a vegan diet, because they live in food deserts, because hunting is part of their culture etc. Taking that away would be extremely damaging to many people.

Tries to do his best even though he always says negative and positive things in such a direct way

This is King Dedede:

This is the music that plays when you fight King Dedede:

Dude started out as some gluttonous jerk who stole food from his own subjects (who he canonically only has as subjects because he walked in and said so and nobody cared enough to object) and got punked by some small pink boy twice, and even back then, he had twice the kid’s HP.

And then he just decided to take that personally for the rest of time, constantly working on himself to stay competitive with a child who, as time has gone on, has been revealed to be pretty damn potent for VARIOUS memetic reasons.

By all accounts, he should have fallen off in terms of relevance LONG ago, and even in Kirby Super Star Ultra’s rematch, he was still sensitive enough to pain to be the only boss that would flinch when hit. He almost became outdated.

…But he didn’t. He never has, and never will. Somehow, in each game, it’s always been a toss-up between him and Meta Knight, the OTHER Voidborn thing to come from space, for the role of Second Banana Guardian of Dreamland. He’s some blowhard bully of a lazy penguin that kept getting possessed, and yet he remains on par with demigods, all because of a strong sense of determination.

All while keeping the gut.

“I beg your pardon?”

“Don’t get me wrong, our little… collaboration has been fruitful, but I have to look out for the best interests of my people, and this isn’t it.”

“I’m afraid you misunderstand the nature of this relationship, ‘your majesty’. Your seat at this table is a courtesy. You may be the king of these lands, but ultimately, you’re just a fat penguin who rules a kingdom of fools and routinely loses fights with a child. You aren’t in a position to let us do anything.”

“Ha! No… no, I think it’s you who misunderstands your position.”

“Oh?”

“I’ve lost fights to a child. And have you seen the kind of fights that child wins? Gods and monsters. Thing you can’t even imagine. And then there’s me. Just little old me. Yeah, I lose, eventually, but I make him sweat for every victory. Do you understand?“

“I–”

But Dedede? As early as his second appearance, he was already learning from his battles with Kirby. Not only did he learn to mimic Kirby’s flight, but he also learned that if he was going to cross Kirby, it’d be for a damn good reason. He didn’t break the Star Rod to be a jerk, but so literal nightmares couldn’t hijack it to surf the currents of the Fountain of Dreams and haunt Dream Land. Sure, he treated himself to a dip in its waters as a reward (he’s still kind of a self-absorbed jerk), but compared to stealing his subjects’ food for personal satisfaction he’s come a long way. After that, he only fights Kirby when literally possessed by the powers of darkness (and that one time when Kirby got hangry and picked a fight). They aren’t on good terms, but they’re on the same side. That’s more than oh so honorable Meta Knight can say, when he tried to conquer Dream Land due to getting sick of their laziness.

And then we come to Revenge of the King. Kirby and Dedede may not have actively feuded in a while, but that tension is still there. One way or another, Dedede wants it broken. That’s why he throws down the gauntlet one last time, Dedede vs Kirby, in a rerun of their first fight. It’s the first true time these two have come to blow in ages, but this time it isn’t a heroic youth rushing out to stop a gluttonous bully from tormenting the populace. There’s no misunderstanding setting the two against each other. There’s no greater quest this is a sideshow for. There isn’t even a show for glory: the boxing ring where their first fight happened is now a steel cage, its once-vibrant audience empty bar the King’s most loyal retainer. This is two rivals giving it their all in an honorable, equal fight. Dedede even shows Kirby the same respect Meta Knight would, giving him a copy of his signature weapon so they can settle things on the same page.

When I say settle it, I mean they well and truly settle it. They leave their grudges behind with this grudge match. Any hatred or jealousy Dedede has left for Kirby is beaten out of him as their hammers rain down on one another. He sullenly walks into the setting sun, the people he used to mistreat, push around, and steal from now inspired enough to walk by his side. And then the next day, he chooses to be a better person.

Dedede’s next appearance in a mainline Kirby game, Returns to Dream Land, has him be a member of the playable cast. And from that day forward, he has never been a villain in a mainline title under his own power. When the Haltmann Works Company invades Pop Star, Meta Knight isn’t the only one to stand against them. Dedede, too, jumps right into the fray. When the Jamba Hearts brainwash Dedede and leave him once more stealing Dream Land’s food, Kirby doesn’t think “typical Dedede.” He’s confused that the man he deems a friend would even do such a thing again. Hell, when Queen Sectonia sends her minion to steal away Dream Land’s greatest hero, it isn’t Kirby or even Meta Knight getting stolen away; it’s Dedede, and if the game’s Dededetour bonus mode is any indication, that sure wasn’t a bad guess!

He’s still vain and lazy. Like, after everything is over and the dust settles, he’s so upset by Kirby “stealing his thunder” and kicking his ass that he refuses to speak to him. He’s just lounging on a bed with his servants feeding him fruit. Because yeah, he’s still a lazy guy. He’s literally sulking like a little kid! But, well, can you blame him?
