This is so beautiful. Such unshakable faith can never be destroyed.
A stunning act of faith, resilience, solidarity, and humanity. As Palestinians perform Friday prayers near the ruins of a mosque destroyed in Israeli strikes, in #Rafah in the southern #Gaza Strip. March 1, 2024." from Dr Jennifer Cassidy
I was trying to find out if Kermit was eligible to be pope and I found a blog that says he's the perfect example of a catholic priest
oh this is a life saver
So these are both “Aw Fuck I’m outta real food” meals BUT ALSO: if you’re learning how to cook, these are great “baby steps” meals to learn how to cook basics into something enjoyable without “wasting” anything expensive. Though I maintain that even cooking screw-ups are valuable in terms of lessons learned.
Also they’re great for when you get absorbed in something and you realize your blood sugar is dropping and you need to make something Quick.
Making basic storecupboard or fridge ingredients less basic and more nutritious.

how to donate an eSIM
Nomad is also doing a ten percent off on Tuesdays promo, for as long as it's Tuesday in the United States Pacific Standard Time Zone (approx. ten more hours at time of reblog). You can combine that with another user's invite code (like mine: SAM667GL) for $3 off. All of this together means you can currently buy a one-week eSIM for just over $5, or get a nearly twenty percent discount on the thirty-day, 10G eSIM. The purchasing process is very straightforward, and then all you have to do is forward an email to gazaesims. Please consider taking ten minutes.
Congrats to the ultimate winner of the Hot & Vintage Movie Men Tournament, Mr. Toshiro Mifune! May he live happily and well where the sun always shines, enjoying the glories of a battle hard fought.
A loving farewell to all of our previous contestants, who are now banished to the shadow realm and all its dark joys and whispered horrors—I hear there's a picnic on the village green today. If you want to remember the fallen heroes, you can find them all beneath the cut.
What happens next? I'll be taking a break of two weeks to rest from this and prep for the Hot & Vintage Ladies Tournament. I'll still be around but only minimally, posting a few last odes to the hot men before transitioning into a little early ladies content, just like I did with this last tournament. The submission form for the Hot & Vintage Ladies tournament will remain up for one more week (closing February 21st), so get your submissions in for that asap! Once the form closes, there will be one more week of break. The first round of the Hot & Vintage Ladies Tournament will be posted on February 29th, as Leap Year Day seems like a fitting allusion to leaping into these ladies' arms.
Thanks for being here! Enjoy the two weeks off, and send me some great propaganda.
btw if anyone wants to make a graphic that includes all the hot men. I would really appreciate it
seeing old photos of jewish people from communities around the world and knowing almost all these communities do not exist anymore at least in some capacity is a common jewish experience but jesus fucking christ man. what a fucking pattern
Exactly this. Take the Babylonian Jews. AKA the Iraqi Jews. They were the descendants of the Jews who stayed in Babylon after the Babylonian Exile in 586 BCE, when the Babylonians under King Nebuchadnezzar II destroyed the First Temple in Jerusalem and dragged much of the Jewish population of the Kingdom of Judah into exile in Babylon.
Then, when the Persian Empire defeated the Babylonians in 539 BCE, the Persian King Cyrus the Great allowed the Jews to return to Judea. Many Jews chose to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the Second Temple, which they completed in 515 BCE.
However, there were Jews who chose to remain in diaspora in Babylon. These Jews are the ancestors of the Babylonian Jews of Iraq.
And there were even earlier Israelite communities in the region that's now called Iraq. These were Israelites who had been taken captive and brought to Mesopotamia after the Neo-Assyrians defeated the Northern Kingdom of Israel in 722 BCE and captured many of the societal elite. That is where many of the "Ten Lost Tribes" of Israel actually wound up. Many of the members of the Northern Kingdom of Israel who were not captured fled south to the Kingdom of Judah.
So, the Babylonian Jews lived in the same region (what is now modern day Iraq) for over 2500 years, ever since the early 500s BCE (and closer to 2700 years when we include the members of the Northern Kingdom who were taken captive in 722 BCE).
The Babylonian Jews had a rich and ancient culture and history. For hundreds of years, especially after the Romans destroyed the Second Temple in Jerusalem in 70 CE, the Babylonian Jewish community was a major source of Jewish learning and culture. That is one reason why the Babylonian Talmud is our main source of Talmud, and not the Jerusalem Talmud.
Babylonian Jews lived continuously in the region until the 1940s. They were, of course, always a minority population in the region. And under Muslim rule (starting with the conquest of Babylon in 636 CE), Jews in Ottoman Iraq were of second class Dhimmi status, subject to regular pogroms and forced to pay the Jizya, a tax on non-Muslims.
Then in 1941, Muslims in Baghdad carried out the Farhud, which was a violent pogrom against the Jews in Baghdad.
Over the following decade, the violence against the Jews in Iraq only escalated, and between 1948 and 1952, hundreds of thousands of Jews fled Iraq to escape mass genocide.
This was part of the overall flight of Jews out of the Muslim world in the late 1940s. In all, nearly 900,000 Jews were forced to flee MENA countries, narrowly escaping another Jewish genocide.
During Operation Ezra and Nehemiah, around 130,000 Jews were airlifted out of Iraq and brought to refugee camps in Israel. They arrived with nothing. The Iraqi authorities forced the Jews to leave all their valuables behind so that they could confiscate them and enrich themselves.
In this interview with The Book of Life Podcast, Australian Jewish author Sarah Sassoon describes her Babylonian Jewish family's harrowing escape from Iraq during Operation Ezra and Nehemiah, which she has turned into a children's book called Shoham's Bangle.
The descendants of these Babylonian Jews make up a significant portion of Israel's Mizrahi (Middle Eastern Jewish) population today.
Over the following decades, more and more Jews fled Iraq. There once was an ancient, thriving Jewish community of around 150,000 Jews in Iraq, which predated Islam by over 1000 years. Today, only around 4 Jews remain.
And guess what, kids! That is the very definition of ethnic cleansing: the expulsion, imprisonment, and/or killing of an ethnic minority by a dominant majority in order to achieve ethnic homogeneity.
having kind of a tired sigh bc this is like mostly true but it's 1) needlessly antagonistic toward muslims, and 2) completely neglects to mention things like the 1950-1951 baghdad bombings being committed by zionists trying to push the community further into fleeing to 'israel', and how much of that oppression was explicitly reactive to 'israel' itself. like that obviously doesn't excuse the aggressive antisemitism of Nuri al-Said and other iraqi politicians of the day but like. these are pretty major and specific details to leave out!
Gonna go ahead and recommand here Between Worlds: Memoirs of an Arab Jew by Avi Shlaim, an Iraqi Jew discussing his own experiences and the role 'israel' played in the ethnic cleansing of iraqi jews, and remind everyone once again that 'israel' by its very nature requires the ethnic cleansing of diaspora jews
Signed, one very tired diaspora jew

Every single time I see a take that amounts to "if you write about X happening, or like fiction where X happens, you like X" I'm reminded of this one time I was at a casual friends house as a young kid. We were in her room, pretending to "be orphans" escaping from an evil orphanage and having to take care of each other and fend for ourselves. It was all very Little Orphan Annie/All Dogs Go to Heaven and based on the 80s pop media.
And this girl's mom comes in, hears what we're playing and gets all MAD and UPSET. She says that if we play act something, it's because we want it to happen. So her daughter must WANT HER TO DIE.
First off lady, we were 6 year year olds, so take it down several notches. We barely had a concept of mortality for fucks sake. She made us feel so guilty and ashamed, because she was taking our game personally.
Now I have a 5 year old. And sometimes she looks at me and says "pretend you're dead, and I have to -" Whatever it is. Some adult task she's assigned herself.
And it's just so transparently obvious that she's practicing the idea of having to do things on her own. Which is exactly what 5 year olds are supposed to do. I actually find it very flattering that the only way she can envision me not being available to help her is to be literally deceased. Otherwise, obviously, she wouldn't have to do scary hard things alone.
It's a natural coping mechanism. She's self-soothing about what would happen if I wasn't there by play-acting independence in a perfectly safe environment. She's also practicing skills she needs, and making up excuses for practicing them on her own, without taking on the responsibility of being able to do them by herself all the time yet.
Humans mentally rehearse bad this in their brains all the time. We can do that by ruminating- going over worries over and over again, which tends to lead to anxiety and helplessness and depression. Or we can do it with a sense of play- by recognizing that the fiction is fiction and we can dip our toe into these experiences and expose ourselves to bad things without actually being injured.
My daughter does not want me dead. And I don't want bad things to happen in real life. But fiction and pretend help me face the horrors of the world and think about them without collapsing or messing myself up mentally.
[ID: A socially produced problem became the responsibility of the incapacitated individual, who was accused of shirking and malingering to avoid contributing to the needs of the market. The medical diagnosis and prognosis of the claimants -- including existing claimants -- were completely disregarded. Work, abstracted from the realities of paid employment, became a health outcome, and even a form of therapy: 'work itself is therapeutic, aids recovery, and is the best form of rehabilitation,' reads the report by Waddell and Aylward. Not working -- which was previously supported by incapacity benefits -- was now perceived as 'one of the greatest known risks to public health,' more than working in the North Sea, or 'smoking 10 packets of cigarettes per day,' even, according to Wessely, increasing your likelihood of suicide forty-fold after six months. If only incapacitated people could get back to work, even if that work was mundane and dissatisfying and rife with inequality, maybe they wouldn't be so incapacitated after all. end ID]

“The function, the very serious function of racism is distraction. It keeps you from doing your work. It keeps you explaining, over and over again, your reason for being… Somebody says you have no language and you spend twenty years proving that you do. Somebody says your head isn’t shaped properly so you have scientists working on the fact that it is. Somebody says you have no art, so you dredge that up. Somebody says you have no kingdoms, so you dredge that up.
None of this is necessary. There will always be one more thing.”
- Toni Morrison, PSU reel-to-reel tapes.
"how do i know a woman wants me to talk to her in the grocery store" are you an elderly woman with valuable information about cooking, cleaning, or saving money? if you answered no, then women do not want to talk to you in the grocery store.
