For anyone who wants a free pose-able human reference for drawing
The other day I came across this awesome program by accident (I don’t even remember what I was actually searching for, but on the several times I’ve looked for a program like this I’ve had no luck). It’s cool enough that I wanted to share it.
It’s called DesignDoll (website here) and it’s a program that lets you shape and pose a human figure pretty much however you want.
There’s a trial version with no expiration date that can be downloaded for free, as well as the “pro license” version priced at $79. I’ve only had the free version for two days so far, so I’m not an expert and I haven’t figured out all of the features yet, but I’ve got the basics down. The website’s tutorials are actually pretty helpful for the basics, as well.
Here’s the page for download, which has a list of the features available in both versions.
There are three features the free version doesn’t have:
Can’t save OBJ files for export
Can’t download models and poses from Doll Atelier (a sharing site for users; note that the site is in Japanese, though)
It can’t load saved files
The third one means that if you make a pose, save it, and close the program, you can’t load that pose/modified model later. You have to start with the default model. I found that out when I tried to load a file from the day before (this is why reading is important…). Whether saving your modifications (and downloading models and poses) is worth $80 is up to you.
But, the default model is pretty nice and honestly if all you’re looking for is a basic pose reference it should work fairly well as it is. Here’s what it looks like:
There’s a pose tag that lets you drag each joint into place and rotate body parts. The torso and waist can be twisted separately, and it seems like everything pretty much follows the range of movement it would have on an actual human.
Even the entire shoulder area is actually movable along with the joint! See, like how the scapular area of the back raises with the arm:
The morphing tag is one of the coolest features, in my opinion. It lets you pick and choose from a library of pre-set forms for the head, chest, arms, legs, etc. It has some more realistic body shapes in addition to more anime-like ones. Don’t like the options there? Mix a few to get what you want! Each option has a slider that lets you blend as much or as little as you want into the design.
So you, too, can create beautiful things like kawaii Muscle-chan!!
The scale tag lets you mess with the proportions and connection points of different joints. This feature combined with the morphing feature not only allows more body shape variations, but it also means that you can do things like make a more digitigrade model if you want. (The feet only have an ankle joint, but for regular human poses that’s all that you really need, so whatever.)
Or you can make a weird chubby alien-like thing with giant hands and balloon tiddies if that’s more your thing.
The ability to pose hands to the extent it allows is far more than I could have hoped for from a free program. Seriously, you can change the position of each finger joint individually, as well as how spread out the fingers are from each other. Each crease on the diagram below is a point of movement, and the circles are for spread between fingers.
And to make it a bit more convenient, there’s a library of pre-set hand poses you can pick from as well, and then change the pose from that if you like.
In both versions, you can also import OBJ files from other places for the model to hold, like if you wanted to have them hold a sword or something.
Basically, this program is awesome and free and you should totally check it out if you want a good program for creating pose references.
I just wanted to add a little more to this. If you have trouble figuring out how light sources work in your drawings this also allows you to choose where to have a light source.
That shaded ball on the left is your light source. You can see how moving the point changed the shadow cast.
Oh and all those other nifty looking things in that bottom bar there, yeah it’s what you think. You can change the model color to one of these presets or even customize your own palette.
Plus for all you lovely people who want something a little more simplified to use as a pose reference
You can turn your model into the classic wire frame.
Why reblog this? Because for more visual creators, this will be like the lumberjack discovering chainsaws. “Reblog to save lives” as the saying goes.
Dividing up eras of tumblr
It just occurred to me that I kind of arbitrarily started referring to “first age” “second age” and “third age” tumblr one day because I realized during a discord conversation that it really can be divided up very effectively between a couple major events that changed the fabric of the site’s culture almost overnight, but nobody but me ever refers to them that way, so by way of explanation:
First Age: everything before Dashcon. Art communities were still largely thriving on the internet and social media still mostly existed out from under corporate monopolies, and people were just wildly guessing about how to use it. We were in the last hurrah of the internet wild west and lolcats were still a thing. Tumblr was just a fun and quirky place, we were blissfully writing unironic posts about tumblr university and fandom vs hipster and the “I like your shoelaces” thing, Hank Green wrote a goddamn song about tumblr, we were all like Adam and Eve dwelling in Eden unaware of their sin. Potterheads grab your wands.
Second Age: post-Dashcon, but pre-Purge. We have all eaten the fruit of knowledge and there is no going back. There are no more secret code or tumblr university posts because everyone knows firsthand how badly that would go. Fandom culture is forever changed. We are now aware that we live in a hellish cringetopia but have absolutely no plans to leave, because by now a combination of monopolies and a sneaky rise in purity culture has the internet by the throat (but not in a kinky way, that would scare off advertisers) so there aren’t a lot of better options, and at least our relatives can’t find us here. A lot of artists now have their primary presence on tumblr. The lax policies regarding nsfw and controversial content mean it’s a good space for queer creators and sex workers despite the many shortcomings we’re now aware of. The porn bot plague really kicks into full gear to the point that every time our follower counts go up we’re ready with the block/spam button like the uncles from Secondhand Lions picking off traveling salesmen. The drama starts to get really fucking weird, with classics such as the human pet guy and the bone-stealing witch.
Third Age: post-Purge. After changing corporate hands a few times, the drive to make the internet safe for our Good Christian Advertisers and hypothetical children has finally reached us, and brings with it TERFs, purity culture, and the Porn Ban, which was allegedly a solution to the porn bots except that it clearly wasn’t at all. The large community of sex workers and artists that was keeping tumblr afloat as anything resembling a viable social media site have made a mass exodus and a lot of the rest of the userbase followed them, mostly to twitter or a few doomed attempts at tumblr copycats. Tumblr is now a mad max clown car full of people too stubborn to pack up and leave for a functional website. It’s a post-apocalyptic wasteland whose only remaining merit is that even without the ability to post porn we’ve managed to make ourselves such a complete anathema to advertisers that we’re mostly just left alone. We’re all just tired. Some people still run art blogs but nobody outside of tumblr ever sees them. Literally all we have going for us is that we’re not twitter and we have +5 resistance to capitalism. And Xkit.
Vegans who are vegan because “but the earth” and “but the farmers” and “but the animals” and all this other hoity-toity nonsense and not just because they can’t or don’t wanna eat meat/animal products make me fuckin tired man.
Okay I’m not off this bullshit yet.
The thing is, I’ve got zero issues if you personally don’t like meat or animal products, or if you’re unable to eat them. Or if you just don’t want to! You can eat whatever you like, and you shouldn’t be forced to eat something you don’t.
But what gets under my skin is when people start trying to one-up each other about why they’re vegan, and start advocating for everyone else to do it, and start calling farmers abusive and not giving a fuck about the sustainability of their diets.
Because the rub is that not every farmer’s field is right for every crop. Where I live, the soil is full of clay and sand, and fields often flood. Our fields support corn, beans, wheat, grass, and root veggies super well! But... there are plenty of foods it doesn’t support. And you have to remember that farmer’s income depends on their crop yielding as much as possible. For a small farm, trying to grow something that their soil isn’t made for requires thousands of dollars of manure and topsoil. It’s not something they can do easily. Farmers don’t see money for their efforts until they harvest and sell it. They have to get max product.
It’s hard to get a balanced diet on just plants. And while animals are their own challenge to farm, often they are the best use of the land a farmer has. You can grow cattle enough to sustain yourself on way less land than a farmer who grows corn or wheat. Chickens are easy to raise and care for humanely, the only real limiting factor is how much space you have in your yard and how you plan to feed them. Animals don’t require a specific ph of soil or a certain nitrogen content. And their manure can be composted and sold to other farmers for their fields.
This is a system that works, and the only reason we hear about animals facing abuse in farms is because huge farms care more about maximum profit and less about animal welfare.
Which isn’t to say every big company mistreats animals either - most livestocks are extremely susceptible to disease, death, and stunted growth when put into poor conditions. Unfortunately for chickens, they tend not to stop growing when stressed, and that has led big companies to abuse them.
But the point is that it’s not only possible to raise livestock humanely, it’s one of the best ways to get good quality products from them. A mistreated, malnourished cow won’t produce as much milk as one that is well taken care of. A laying hen under stress will not lay. And excluding chickens, most animals grown for meat will not eat properly when overly stressed.
It also seems like vegans seem to think that animals are only raised for their products and meat, when their hides, feathers, and bones are all usually used as well. And I hate to be that guy, but an item made of leather is going to last you so much longer than one made of plastic, and will break down once used as well.
Plus, they often seem to disreguard the fact that many types of animals benefit from our farming them. Bees, for example, aren’t native to North America but are now one of its biggest pollinatiors. And they’re dying, for reasons we don’t know. But beekeeping helps protect those bees. Often, when bees fill a hive’s available space with honey, they get stressed and start wanting to swarm and find a new place. By removing slate of honey from a hive, a beekeeper prevents that. Plus, bees always make more honey than they need, and if they have too much they may get stressed and want to split, which can lead to the death of the hive.
Not to mention that popular vegan foods are not sustainable. Agave nectar comes from a cactus that takes nearly 100 years to grow, and it is being consumed faster than it can repopulate. Quinoa is a grain that’s currently being farmed mostly using extremely exploitatative labor.
And that being vegan is both expensive and is full of foods that are common allergens, like nuts, soy, wheat, and so on.
“But if we all just used that land to farm, we could end hunger!”
No, you can’t. Because we have enough food to feed everyone. We have so much food! Way more than we need. So much that we toss out the food that looks ugly even if it isn’t bad. The reason people go hungry is because of Food Deserts. I live in a food desert. It’s an area where food isn’t sold in many places and is often expensive. The nearest grocery store to me is at least 15 minutes away if I want fresh food. Food deserts are why people are starving. Not because of a lack of food. Meat here is much cheaper than vegan alternatives, and is more widely available.
Veganism has become something of a scourge to me and where I live, which is heavily farmland. All it does here is hurt the people trying to live here, and in turn their animals.
Veganism is a diet choice, and nothing more. You are not better than me because you don’t eat what I do. You aren’t less harmful because you don’t eat what I do. There is no perfect answer, and for that I’m sorry. But veganism isn’t anywhere near perfect, either.
God op I need to kiss you on the head for this post you hit pretty much all the marks.
May I add: Indigenous people hunted, farmed local crops, fished, and used ALL their resources well. They did so humanely and they used all the parts of the animal, too. A leather hide will keep you warmer than you imagine. Colonization wiped out species of animals and plants all over the world.
It's not exactly a stretch to say that White Veganism is born of colonizer ideals.
And that whole "Hunting is bad, period" shit? I live in the south and can tell y'all that people here generally don't hunt for fun. We also aren't hunting cows. Squirrel, deer, birds, fish, frogs- So many species are invasive and reproducing wayy to fast, which ruins the ecosystem. If a poor rural family gets fed AND it helps our wildlife flourish, why should we shame them? (And it's an entire different conversation but vegan or "healthy" food is NOT remotely possible while on foodstamps. If you get $500 a month to feed 5 people, you can't remotely afford 4 TOMATOES for $20, much less do a month of "healthy" meals on that budget.)
You absolutely CAN add that and I WILL love you for it
One of the reasons I grew to kind of dislike veganism as an ideology, because that’s how a lot of vegans treat it like: an ideology. I’ve had wonderful vegan and vegetarian friends who were understanding but then I’ve also had some very nasty experiences with some people who tried to shame me for not agreeing to try that lifestyle when it’s literally impossible for me to do so due to allergies. Deathly allergies. As in, I eat one sesame seed and I need my Epipen kind of allergies.
Which, if anyone has a dietary restriction, you know how much that sucks. Because you constantly are made to feel guilty or judged as being ungrateful or picky with food, and at least in my country a lot of servers, waiters and cooks will treat you as an entitled costumer and be very rude about it.
So yeah, just don’t shame people with dietary restrictions please, wether they are vegan or not, it doesn’t matter, just don’t be a jerk.
The Final Steps | Part 1
Closure! Closure for Rey, for Finn, for Rose…and yes, even for Ben. Because while I enjoyed Rise of Skywalker, I was seriously left wanting. So strap in for a canon-compliant epilogue that’s basically the length of another movie. More parts coming. Part 1 continued under the cut.
