you'll feel like a total dipshit train wreck and no matter what some girl is gonna see you and think "role model". you can't kill yourself you have to go be clocky in the gas station so a 14 year old can have the trajectory of her life altered forever
as annoying as it is to work fast food, at my previous job one time a kid recognized the theta delta pin on my hat and was so fucking excited because i was the first other therian they had ever encountered offline.
"hey....are you a therian?" "yeah!" "what kind of animal?" "eh, some kinda dog" "😲😀 im like a wolf coyote hybrid" "that's fuckin awesome"
to be weird is to cast lifelines all around you

what really drives me nuts is that like. this happens an average of x times per year as a visibly weird person, but we only get made aware of it a small fraction of the time. you can't kill yourself you have to be clocky in the gas station.
Being clocky when i was working as a barista was one of my big joys. Being clocky when i was teaching high schoolers how to play the marimba was my reason for being for half a decade. It sucks how scared I am to leave the house I live in now. But I still need to try and be clocky at the grocery store. I wish i had a job to be clocky at. Being visibly me is one of the most radical acts I'm capable of, and I hope that one day we live in a world where it isn't radical at all.
that's exactly what I was feeling when I wrote this. we all find ways to defy our fear, love is an excellent motivator.
I love going out being clocky. I love seeing a young queer as a cashier. Usually I'm wearing a mask so I imagine folks can't quitr tell until I speak. I almost always complimented on my hair by these folks too. I love being able to thank them and give them a compliment in return.
Why are my friends like this
Sk8er Boi takes an existentialist stance, counter to utilitarianism. The song is critiquing Pretty Face’s friends as shallow, horrible people who do take a utilitarian view to human value - which is not something fans of the song should seek to emulate. Instead, Sk8er Boi advocates for authenticity to the self.
While Pretty Face’s friends saw no value in the young Skater Boy, and only showed interest when he had grown up and gained the trappings of what they considered success, Pretty Face always liked Skater Boy. However, rather than be true to herself and pursue what she genuinely wanted, Pretty Face caved to peer pressure and accepted a more ‘traditional’ approach to life, choosing to chase the conventional success her friends coveted. She is rewarded with what is characterized as an unfulfilling life and self-involved friends who can’t even be bothered to let her know that her old crush is now famous, instead buying tickets to his show for themselves and only sharing this information with Pretty Face when she reaches out to them directly. The last we see of her, Pretty Face is lonely and mired with regret.
Meanwhile, we can presume that Skater Boy, even if he had never become famous, would still have had a more fulfilling life than the one Pretty Face accepted, as we see that he chose to pursue things that genuinely interest him (i.e., music). He also appears to have found a devoted girlfriend who shows up for him, shares his values, and “rock[s his] world” in Avril Lavigne. In contrast, Pretty Face is “all alone” and her enduring group of friends are (at best) wholly ignorant (and more likely blatantly inconsiderate) of her interests and feelings. Regardless of the world’s judgment of where they ended up professionally, Skater Boy is supported, happy, and self-actualized, and Pretty Face is not.
Sk8er Boi is a lesson about self-determination - choosing your own life path regardless of how others feel about it and seeing the value that comes with being the arbiter of your own destiny - rather than a tale that endorses the idea that one’s ultimate worth is determined by their eventual career success. Its message is that authentic pursuit of your own fulfillment without regard to other people’s judgments is what creates a rewarding life, regardless of the material outcomes. Ultimately, the question Sk8er Boi leaves us with is not ‘if she’d made a different choice, could Pretty Face have ended up with a famous guy?’ - it’s ‘if she’d made a different choice, could she have been happy?’

obsessed with the way half man builds a light and dark metaphor around ruben across episodes.
in episode 2, lori drops niall off at university and warns him against calling ruben straight away—it would be good for him, she says, to see what life is like without his light blinding your eyes. later that same episode, alby pushes back when niall asserts he and ruben are practically the same person: they're as much the same person as jekyll and hyde. and then celeste, leaving the bar with niall, tells him that ruben has blackness in him.
taken together, alby and celeste's comments seem to contradict lori's—ruben possesses light, ruben possesses darkness—but the show is doing something much more precise than assigning him a simple moral category. lori's phrasing is so exact: ruben's light doesn't illuminate, it blinds. it's not light in the sense of warmth or goodness—it's magnitude and intensity. presence so overwhelming it obscures and distorts perception itself. ruben's charisma, volatility, beauty, violence—all of it so excessive, so intoxicating, it eclipses other people's interiority. including, or perhaps especially, niall's. everyone begins organizing themselves in relation to him, whether they consciously mean to or not.
which is exactly why, by episode 4, that same light becomes shadow. in the hospital, niall says roughly: i hate everything about you and the giant shadow you cast which seems to turn with the sun whichever way i'm walking. but that doesn't stop me wanting every bit of it.
shadows are produced by light—the shadow only exists because of the thing that casts it, so these aren't opposing images—they're the same phenomenon described from different angles, at different removes. ruben is not light or darkness; he is the condition under which both are visible. up close, he overwhelms; move away and he follows. there is no position from which niall can step outside his influence—every attempt at distance still leaves him oriented around the same gravitational center. ruben remains the reference point for direction, scale, even self-definition.
and it's why alby's jekyll and hyde comparison is richer than it first appears. the point of that story isn't that one man is good and the other evil—it's that they are not two people at all, but two expressions of a single divided self. the separation is unstable; each half contains the logic of the other. alby thinks he's distinguishing niall and ruben when he invokes it, but what he actually articulates is the opposite: not separation, but entanglement. they are not mirrors, nor are they opposites. they are not fully separable at all.
which is what that final admission confirms: that doesn't stop me wanting every bit of it. niall wants to escape ruben. he wants to be ruben. he wants to live inside ruben—to be seen by him, held by him, never forgotten by him. the shame and the desire and the resentment and the longing aren't separate feelings that happen to coexist. for niall and ruben they are the same feeling, fused into a single afterimage. no one understands the other the way they do. two lives cut from the same cloth in the wrong way—where the seams match up into something that only makes sense as a whole. the same way you cannot separate light from the shadow it throws.
@speakinsecretalphabets you are SO close! this reblog reminded me of this part of the 'weeks ahead' trailer:
and, in my original tags, i said i'd reblog with an addition if necessary. after rewatching 3&4 with this still and my original post in mind, my god do i have some new additions, because episode 4 makes all of this symbolism almost unbearably literal! walk with me!!
It’s so normalized, they teach it to us from birth. Some people live their entire lives never seeing an issue with the images above.

:))))))
It’s actually a pretty good highlight of how generally people don’t notice they’re being racist, since the diversity in the various characters depicted leads me to believe they thought they were including everyone.

before you make fun of a person doing something brave and vulnerable like dancing or singing or reading poetry in front of a lot of people:
don’t.

Maybe I can convince y'all to act right by framing things in terms of social engineering. People will be a whole lot more likely to do whatever shit you're trying to hector them into doing if you're not constantly being a dick the whole time. Being niceys is a powerful social engineering tool such as all of the times I have maliciously manipulated people into fulfilling my whims using an evil sociopathic manipulation technique i like to call "asking nice and then saying thanks after"
so exhausted by how fundamentally anti-human the capitalist world has become. like ageing, getting fat, being slightly inefficient, and making mediocre art are all extremely normal and extremely human activities, why is every corporation trying to convince us to spend all our money fighting that
