Today is the day I finally start hormones, after over two and a half years of waiting. Five years if you're counting from when I first came out as trans. The wait was so long because the publicly funded system is so underfunded, and I was part of a huge wave of trans people coming out. Advice for my past self, and others early in transition: - get a referral even if you're not sure you want hormones or other stuff, there'll be enough time to figure it out when you're on the waiting list. - if you can afford it, maybe go privately while the NHS sorts itself out (IF it does...) - look into fertility preservation well in advance of getting the diagnosis/starting hormones. The NHS will pay for it if you're with them. - support 'Action for Trans Health' and write to your MP to try and get more resources for the NHS, and to change the system to being based on informed consent.

Having to NOT SHAVE before electrolysis appointments is making me lose my mind!  How do other trans women deal with this!?

I went to my first appointment at the gender identity clinic and found out that I have to go on another waiting list before I can have the medical assessment, and so I probably have to wait an extra 6 months before getting a diagnosis of gender dysphoria.  This means an extra 6 months before hormones.  To say the least I’m disappointed. =(
