I wanted to weigh in on this recent trend of people running into Scientology buildings, causing chaos, and posting the videos on social media. Whether these people are doing it for social media clout or to genuinely expose the abuses of Scientology, what they are doing is unhelpful, and by engaging in these actions, they are unwittingly helping Scientology. I want as many people as possible talking about the dangers and criminality of Scientology. But I spent decades on the other side of this, and if I had been confronted by people running through Scientology buildings and harassing me or staff, it would have pushed me further into Scientology. That is because Scientologists are deeply indoctrinated and radicalized and believe they are helping people. They have been brainwashed over many years into believing the outside world is filled with chaos and criminality, and that their mission, one they believe they are on through countless lifetimes, is to help eradicate this chaos. If someone is brainwashed for years into believing the outside world is filled with dangerous lunatics who wish to impede Scientology, a group of people running through a Scientology building is only going to confirm that belief and lead them to dedicate themselves even more to the cause they believe in. Mike Rinder and I discussed this on our podcast Fair Game: Scientologists, in particular Scientology Sea Org members, have a level of dedication and radicalization to Scientology that surpasses that of a jihadist terrorist. Running through a building is not going to break that or lead them to reconsider what they’ve given up their entire lives for. I also want to note that any Scientology building that someone is allowed to easily enter from the street is not a building where someone like David Miscavige or any senior Scientology executive is going to be. People at that level of Scientology’s criminal leadership will be behind gates and many layers of security. Please focus on exposing the dangers of Scientology, not making a spectacle out of it.

Scientology is a terrifying cult with way too much freedom in the US and as much as I hate it and want to see it gone, mockery doesn't help the people trapped in it or those who have lost people to it. People like mocking Scientology (and Mormons and JW and every other cult) because it makes them feel smart and superior and good, but it just reinforced exactly what the cult wants it's victims to believe: the outside world is hostile and threatening to us, outsiders think you are stupid and will hurt you for fun because of your beliefs and your community, we are the only ones who understand you and will keep you safe, never leave us or look what will happen to you.

I mean, if you were part of a religion that you know is widely mocked and (to you) discriminated against by a chaotic corrupt world, and there were people doing this shit to your churches, how would you feel about that? Unsafe, threatened, seeking to further connect with other members of your church, feeling an increased urgency to continue the "good work"?

People make themselves feel better about engaging in mockery by convincing themselves its somehow helpful. But they also often fixate on cults having "weird" or "stupid" beliefs, rather than the actual problem with high control groups (the abuse). This will not help anyone. People doing this trend are doing it to entertain themselves and to get clout, not to help victims. It should not be encouraged or seen as a good thing.

The people in the notes who are talking about how much they hate Scientology and all Scientologists and so they deserve this... who exactly do you think you are defending? What victims of Scientology are you angry on behalf of?

And a very special "fuck you" to this person:

Congratulations! You know nothing about high control groups and you will happily blame victims of abuse because it makes you feel good. What you are literally saying here is "if you are abused by a known abuser who found and took advantage of you at a vulnerable time in your life, and when you may have been ignorant to their abuse or open to believing that the claims of abuse were actually lies, you deserve to be bullied for being abused."

I ask, once again: what victims of Scientology are you angry on behalf of? You are all using Scientology's abuse to justify your enjoyment of this, despite actual cult survivors, including people who have escaped Scientology, pointing out how unhelpful this is.

You aren't bravely standing up to Scientology. You are just experiencing schadenfreude. This is no different than people hating racists more than they love people of color, or hating homophobes more than they love queer people; y'all hate Scientology far, far more than you give a fuck about the people "under their sway," who you conveniently treat as an entirely separate group from Scientologists.

You literally cannot say "fuck Scientologists" but also claim to say that on behalf of their victims. The people defending Scientology are the people who get raped, beaten, emotionally abused, who have their children taken away, who are used for slave labor. The victims are the fucking Scientologists.

The FBI cut the phone lines during the 1977 disability rights sit-in. Then they turned off the hot water.

They locked the doors from the outside. One hundred and fifty people were trapped on the fourth floor. Half of them used wheelchairs. The government assumed they would leave.

Kitty Cone was thirty-three. She had muscular dystrophy. Her muscles were failing, but her logistics were flawless. She knew how to organize people.

The federal government had promised to sign regulations protecting disabled Americans from discrimination. The policy was known as Section 504. They printed the promise on paper. Then they stalled. Without a signature, it was just typography.

The protesters entered the regional Health, Education, and Welfare building in San Francisco on a Tuesday morning. They took the elevators to the director's office. They brought sleeping bags and catheters. They informed the staff they were not leaving until the law was signed.

By sunset, the police surrounded the exits. Kitty sat near the windows. She organized the floor plan. She assigned committees for security and sanitation. She kept her medication in a small cooler.

According to federal memorandums released decades later, the strategy to end the occupation relied on medical attrition. The building was not equipped for long-term habitation. The FBI calculated that a population requiring ventilators, specialized diets, and daily medical aides would voluntarily evacuate if the environment became sufficiently hostile. They instituted a blockade.

The blockade went into effect immediately. No food deliveries allowed. No medical supplies permitted through the lobby. Guards stood at the main doors checking identification.

Kitty's muscles deteriorated faster under the physical strain. She couldn't walk. When the phone lines went dead, the fourth floor lost contact with the press. The government waited for the quiet.

Kitty dropped to the floor. She realized the barricades were designed for standing adults. The police had blocked the hallways at waist height. They hadn't blocked the linoleum.

The floors were covered in cigarette ash and spilled coffee. She dragged her body through it. She crawled under the barricades to reach the restricted elevator shafts and unguarded offices.

She carried notes in her pockets. She found a single working payphone the FBI missed. She called the local news desks. She called the mayor's office.

She crawled back. When her arms failed, someone pulled her by her ankles. The Black Panthers heard the news reports. They crossed the police lines with hot meals. The FBI could not stop them without a riot.

They shut off the elevators, so she crawled.

The occupation lasted twenty-five days. It remains the longest non-violent occupation of a federal building in American history. On April 28, the Secretary of HEW signed the regulations without a single alteration.

The protesters left the building the next morning. They went back to their apartments. The Rehabilitation Act regulations laid the groundwork for every accessibility law that followed. The HEW building still stands on United Nations Plaza. The elevators run on a schedule. The doors are heavy glass.

Reminder: America is still the country in the world where disabled people have the most rights by law. Not by custom, which can shift with no input by anyone it affects, but BY LAW. I was surprised to find this out. But then I started seeing how other people talk, and realised when they say "lazy" they would say that about anyone who needed help, who couldn't, who struggled. That their disabled are not enjoying more rights, they're still locked in attics, they're still locked in hospitals, they're in early graves.

Kitty Cone, and more like her, faced down and planned for violence the FBI brings down on ANYONE that dares to demand more, demand better, demand justice for the invisible, disposable, disenfranchised. Only a few years later, the Capitol Crawl happened. Only a little while later, we finally got a bare minimum baseline--the ADA 1990. Ramps, cut curbs, braille, protection from discrimination, and many other things were enshrined into law.

And even though 1990 was almost forty years ago, other countries still haven't caught up. I think about that a lot.

Gullah & Early AAVE

Gumbo – From Bantu kingombo (okra), brought by enslaved Africans and became the name of the Creole stew thickened with okra.

Goober – From Kikongo nguba, the Bantu word for peanut that entered American English via enslaved Africans.

Yam – From West African languages (e.g., Wolof nyami, "to eat"), brought over during the slave trade and adopted into Southern cuisine.

Banjo – From a Bantu root (mbanza), the instrument was crafted by enslaved Africans based on West African string instruments.

Bogus – Likely from Hausa boko-boko (deceitful, fraudulent), entering American English through African American speech in the 19th century.

Juke (box/joint) – From Gullah juke (rowdy, disorderly), derived from Wolof dzug (to live wickedly), later attached to roadside bars.

Tote (to carry) – From West African languages (e.g., Kikongo tota, "to pick up"), recorded in Gullah before spreading to mainstream English.

Dig (to understand) – From Wolof degg (to understand), popularized by jazz musicians in the 1930s after entering English through AAVE.

Jazz – Possibly from West African or Creole slang for energy/sex, first documented in AAVE in Chicago around 1912.
