I haven’t seen this comparison made yet—we talk about Ryland walking toward himself on the beach as a type of foreshadowing—BUT LOOK the figure Rocky makes of Grace in the beginning of the movie is the EXACT POSE Grace makes when he comes back to save Rocky in the end and is banging on the glass!!!!
guys I love this movie you don’t understand.
hello please watch/read project hail mary
Wow thanks for the ingot man let me just inspect the quality real quick
Dude come on
Hello there. Guess how much money I made last year? $28. I’m an investment banking analyst at a boutique firm, in M&A. I have my undergrad from the University of Chicago, one of the top schools in the country. With bonuses, sometimes I make even more. Are you jealous of that? Most people on Tumblr are usually jobless or they decided to major in the humanities and are poor.
$28?

according to An Immense World, apparently giant squid eyes are, like, UNREASONABLY large, even for something their size living at those depths. the next largest eyes on earth, blue whale eyes, are less than half the size, and swordfish, who live at similar depths as giant squid and have the largest eyes of any fish, have eyes that could fit inside a giant squid's pupil.
eyes hit serious diminishing returns wrt resource costs vs vision quality as they get bigger, so the question became: what the FUCK do giant (and colossal) squid need to see so badly that they couldn't see with swordfish-sized eyes that's justifying that massive energy cost? that nothing else in the deep ocean needs to see so fucking badly??
turns out the one strength eyes that big really have over much smaller eyes is: seeing large glowing objects in water deeper than 500 meters from an appreciable distance.
sperm whales are the primary predator of giant squid. sperm whales don't glow. BUT! water that deep is full of bioluminescent creatures-- these creatures light up when bumped into. something a sperm whale's size is continuously bumping into those critters, it's just surrounded by a glowing field all the time when it's swimming at those depths, visible from a distance-- if you have the right eyes-- as a massive glowing shape. so basically the only reason to have eyes the size of soccer balls is if you live in the deep ocean and your life depends on having a heads up when a hungry sperm whale lurking around
and also I gotta say, the imagery... the huge lurking threat betrayed only by the ambiguous glowing shape of its movements through the water, is really evocative, if spooky deep-sea games aren't already using that to make things extremely ominous then they should really start
I really tried to tip the scales in your favor
i do like how tumblr tags work as like a quieter less intrusive part of the post/reblog however my one gripe is that due to the nature of them being tags you cant make #thing jokes as effectively
i love that Stratt canonically orders people to clap for Grace when he does something good. and it happens multiple times
been reading the book

Look, since Stratt loaded the Hail Mary with every single piece of media in existence up to the ship's launch, that means there are millions of books, movies, and tv shows that are missing their sequels, future seasons, and whatever episodes hadn't aired yet, so... We have to consider the possibility of Earth waking up one day to their first contact message sent by an intelligent species from another planet being something like "hello, can you send us Infinity War part 2, question?"
god this is dumb (original)
EDIT: hey guys please reblog this version source has been updated!
Anyone care for a me-burger?
(Close-ups under the cut)
things that always get me about project hail mary (book and movie details that leave me in tears)
grace burning up one of his arms putting rocky back in his atmosphere to save his life (book) and rocky burning himself to save grace's life (both)
the plaques on both their ships that show their people looking to the hail mary and the blip-a and hoping, and waiting (movie)
ryland erasing the 'who am i' board to make the calculations to find rocky, because he knows who he is now (movie)
grace being the first thing to give rocky hope in 46 years (book)
the way grace and rocky find a middle ground between their languages and slowly adopt eachothers grammar and ways of talking (book)
the track where grace goes to save rocky being called 'believe in the hail mary' + the track where grace finds the plaques being called 'humanity' - because its such an inherently human thing. (movie)
grace finding his way home, back to where he always wanted to be, even if he is changed and he is brave, still always remaining a teacher. succeeding because he is a teacher. never really losing who he is, not in the slightest (both)
grace never even for a second considering leaving or even celebrating when he had taumobea that could survive venus, because threeworld still needed taumobea too, no matter how anxious grace always was to work so fast (book)
grace knowing that he would die when he turned around to save rocky and still doing it anyway because he wasn't afraid of dying anymore (book)
"you just need to find someone to be brave for" (movie)
every single parallel or shot that shows how far grace has come (movie)
eva really was the only one to truly believe in grace as a person. she trusted him to find out what was going on with astrophage, she trusted him on the taskforce to talk to the astronauts, and she trusted him to save everyone. (book)
the hail mary serving almost as a time capsule, for if the mission didn't work. something to say "we were here, despite it all, and we tried." (both, but especially the movie) - rylands quilt being made up of different patches presumably made by so many different people, a reminder of earth he still carries with him, and the drawings done by kids of the world and its people. the reminders of earth aboard the hail mary
theres more but im crying too hard to continue this list rn

I took your skull off display because my guests kept saying it looked noticeably gayer than the other skulls
med people are so annoying "This family's 8 year old child who was about to go through a major surgery and kept crying that she was hungry so they pitied her and gave her food, she then had a heart attack in the surgery. They're so stupid 😒" girl they didn't know that could happen or why it happens. it takes so little time to explain to them that will happen instead of telling them "no food" with no explanation 10 times
"Before surgery, your body’s reflexes that protect your airway are relaxed by anesthesia. If there’s food or liquid in your stomach, it will near certainly come back up and go into your lungs, which can cause choking, a severe lung / heart infection or even a heart attack. That’s called aspiration, and it is life-threatening. It's hard, but it's only a single day to prevent near certain death. Not eating or drinking beforehand massively lowers the risk and helps prevent these life threatening situations under anesthesia." <- TIP: patients have brains which allows them to receive information just like you
I have four kids. I’ve had one or another of them need some kind of surgical procedure that requires anesthesia four or five times over the past 15 years.
This Tumblr post is the first time someone has explained to me *why* I couldn’t feed them before those instances.
I’m not stupid. I understood that just fine. Hell, my kids would have understood that just fine. But no one bothered to tell us.
i did know this before having kids (i have six). we have a kid that's needed multiple procedures requiring anesthesia. and every single time, i am asked multiple times if i'm sure he was not given any food or water after a certain point.
every single time i have had to say, "i understand that if he had food or water, he could aspirate it into his lungs under anesthesia. i am not lying to you." THEN someone would make a little note and i would stop being repeatedly asked.
not a single time was that risk explained to me. the only reason it came up was because i already knew. i still don't understand why it isn't standard pre-op counseling or pre-op check information, when me as a parent acknowledging the actual risk also put THE MEDICAL STAFF at ease because i conveyed that i had informed understanding as reason to not lie about giving my kid food.
"maybe some people will get nervous and refuse surgery" okay so they need more counseling about risks and anxiety, not less information in a way that actually does endanger their child or themselves!
