this is my favorite video evcer whats going on
Fascism thrives on ignorance and anti-intellectualism. Here are some ways you can combat it:
There is an ongoing literacy crisis. Teach kids how to read phonetically (other methods produce poor literacy) and introduce them to fun books, both fiction and educational non-fiction.
Teach kids about critical thinking and the scientific method.
You can also introduce kids to edutainment like Sesame Street, Reading Rainbow, The Magic Schoolbus, Bill Nye The Science Guy, Beakman's World, etc.
Help kids develop media literacy skills by asking them literary analysis questions about the media they engage with. Even very young children can begin learning literary analysis if the questions are phrased in words they can understand.
Learn and help other people learn information literacy, ie, how to locate and evaluate information.
Learn the red flags of pseudoscience, and educate other people about them.
Educate people and share media on real science and real history, because fascist narratives are full of pseudoscience and pseudohistory. (Miniminuteman, Gutsick Gibbon and Bart D. Ehrman's YouTube channel are great, by the way!)
Make learning a joyful experience, and show people the beauty and wonder of what's real. Being a discouraging killjoy will spoil your efforts.
i saw someone say nobody needs to know what a .txt file is anymore. what the fuck is the world coming to
unironically i think we need to bring back computer labs because APPARENTLY some people WERENT taught basic computer literacy and internet safety in school
things about computers/the internet i think kids should be formally taught in schools because theyre important to know and the amount of soon to be grown adults i know who know NOTHING about any of these is quite frankly almost all of them (and resources to learn if you dont know these things, because its never to late to get better with computers)
how to troubleshoot by yourself when you have a technical problem
what common file types are
some very basics on how to use ""developer tools"" on your computer (because i cant think of a better way to refer to them) like task manager and command prompt (and their mac equivalents, terminal and activity monitor ofc)
how to read and understand a privacy policy and what your personal data is, as well as what it being collected actually means and steps you can take to keep it private
how to understand terms of service (hey. if you have trouble with reading legalese and worry about being able to understand these policies anyways, here's a site that gives basic summaries of privacy policies and ToS)
what a cookie actually is
internet privacy and your digital footprint!! seriously i dont know why we stopped teaching people that they shouldnt be putting their entire real identity online in a world where your online actions can ruin you irl
basic safety measures like antivirus software (and why you should use it or if the built in one on windows or mac is enough for you) and backing up your computer (also a mac guide)
common keyboard shortcuts (and on mac)
as an additional note: things i think everyone should know on computers and the internet but schools may bit hesitant to teach about for whatever moral/legal standards schools pretend to operate on
vpns and adblockers! (btw for most of these where you can pay for things im purposefully not recommending any specific software but seriously just use ublock origin for an adblocker)
how to not get a virus while pirating something
what a temporary email is and when to use one
red flags that you shouldn't trust a website (and how to quickly check the security of a site)
what javascript on a website does and how to disable it to get around paywalls
ok one last addition! if you want to take it one level higher, i think learning the very basics of at least one programming language is good for people. it makes computers less scary and it makes you feel very cool, and a lot of people get discouraged about it because it seems overly complicated and hard to learn outside a formal classroom setting, so heres some resources for learning the very basics of python (because i consider it the easiest language to learn and knowing one language will make it easier to learn others)
an online compiler so you dont need to download anything or worry about running code directly on your computer if that makes you nervous
a basic video guide to introduce you to python and walk you through beginner steps
a guide to some syntax and commands you should know (this was literally my lifeline in my first CS class)
some performance tasks to give you things to code to practice and assess yourself
hey girl do you hold 90s tv show directed by david lynch close to your heart because you've got twin peaks on your chest

Solidarity with children is often neglected or even made a joke of, so I wanna take a second and tell y'all what I wish I could go back in time and tell myself:
You're right. School is bullshit, homework is bullshit, waking up early is bullshit, going to bed early is bullshit. Some adults are just pointlessly cruel, even those in positions of authority over you. Sometimes adults are wrong, and, in fact, sometimes you are right
You were born with an innate sense of justice and fairness and adults have spent your entire life trying to beat it out of you so you'll shut up and do what you're told in an unjust and unfair society. Don't let them. Many of us have to take effort to relearn the wisdom you have right now, the ability to tell when something is bullshit even if you can't articulate why yet
You deserve happiness, fulfillment, and liberation just as much as any adult. Those first 18 years are just as important as any other time in your life, and it's time you'll never get back. Don't let anyone take them from you just because you're too young to fight back
Question everything, and never take "that's just the way it is" as an answer. Sometimes when things don't make sense to you it's because they just don't make any goddamn sense
Pick your battles, and be strategic. Don't take this post as permission to go starting fights for no reason. But remember that you have worth, and our society tends to not respect that. And you're right: that is bullshit
(also, read Anarchy Works)
also also, read The Teenage Liberation Handbook
Havenât read it myself, but if it interests you then you can read it here for free in case paying for a book online and having it shipped to your house isnât an option for you
Also check out No! Against Adult Supremacy
Reblogging so I can find these book recs later.
My youngest son (16) struggles because he is not really suited to school as it exists. Heâs literally brilliant but also inflexible and doesnât work well when he has no control over his own day. He and I have just been trying to get through this for 11 years now. Next year heâs in a vocational program for game design, hopefully, which will cut back on a lot of the things he truly canât stand:Â
- why is getting changed in front of everybody for gym class a thing?Â
- why do I have to sit through the same material in health class multiple times? (he is ace and sex-repulsed)
- why is this teacher angry with me? I donât understand Google classroom.Â
- why does everyone keep asking me about my college plans? do they think Iâm going through this one minute longer than I have to? fuck all the way off!Â
He has autism, ADHD, and a rampant anxiety disorder as a result of his first two disorders. Right now we are both enjoying his spring break, then itâs back to pushing through the best we can day after day until mid-June. And we are both really frank with each other about just getting through this.Â
If my parents had just earnestly told me "hey, we know this sucks, but there's not much we can do about it so we just have to push through it together" then my school experience as an autistic kid would've been so much more bearable
Part of what motivated me writing this post was finding out as an adult that my parents hated several of my teachers and disagreed with their decisions but didn't tell me at the time, so I wound up blaming myself. Just being told at the time "you're right, this is unfair, and we're on your side" would've made me feel so much less alone, even if the end result wasn't any different
hobbies masterpost!

hrrrggghhhh......philosophy of art......praxis.........the idea that a certain level of complexity or a certain kind of technical skill is what qualifies something as art is bullshit.............so you have to think that way about your own art too you have to be consistent.........you have to choose how you refer to your art thoughtfully to reflect this or it will never sink into your brain..............save me jacob geller video essay "Who's Afraid of Modern Art" ............
I Don't Care How Silly It Makes You Feel, That 10 Minute Bust Sketch Of Your Gay OC Facing Left Where One Eye Is Too Big And The Hair's Wrong Is Just As Much A Piece Of Art As The Fucking Mona Lisa And You Will Refer To It As Real Art With Inherent Value By Virtue Of Being Art Or Your Inconsistent Praxis Will Subtly Eat Away At Your Confidence In All Forms Of Creation, Forever
the video mentioned, if anyone wants to watch it, which i highly recommend you do.
"chatGPT will confidently spit out information cobbled together from various sources in its dataset that sounds correct even when it blatantly isn't"
correct! that's why it's important to remember that chatbots don't have any sort of inherent fact-checking
"this means it's LYING to you! why, i work at a library, and just the other day, i had three college students submit lists of entirely nonexistent articles that chatGPT had cited as sources!"
well i think "lying" is anthropomorphizing it a little bit too m- oh my god what the fuck graduate students are using chatGPT as a resource? for writing PAPERS???? and not even googling the articles they asked you for first??? and you think the issue here is fucking CHATGPT???????
an addendum:
yes, i am aware that some of the fault here lies with the producers of these chatbots, who hype them up to the point of outright lying about their capabilities. that barely increases my sympathy towards people who take chatGPT output and assume it's true without even doing the bare minimum of followup legwork to confirm it. if Microsoft ran ads telling people that "gullible" was written on the ceiling, there would still be dozens of thinkpieces by the end of the day about how you're not allowed to laugh at anyone who fell for it because It Says A Lot About Our Society.
using chatGPT (or any other chatbot trained on a sufficiently broad dataset) to write your college paper is academic dishonesty, lazy, a bad idea, liable to get you suspended or expelled, and generally just shooting yourself in the foot with a Howitzer. it is NOT plagiarism. how are you going to complain about how chatGPT invents new sentences that were never in the material it claims they were from, and then in the same breath say that it's just blindly copying stuff? which one is it? yes, chatGPT synthesizes ideas and phrases from multiple existing papers to produce novel-sounding output. you also do this. come on guys we went over this whole plagiarism thing with artbots, don't make me tap the sign about how IP law is not your friend.
after perusing the notes, i have come to the conclusion that teachers should be paid ten thousand dollars per second as compensation for having to grade this shit
Students, listen to me and listen good: ChatGPT is for solving blank-page anxiety. It is not for writing your papers for you.
You know that moment when you sit down to write your paper, and you have your sources, you have a rough outline, you know what you want to say, and you pull up that Google Docs and suddenly you forget how words work? ChatGPT is great for that moment.
You'll plug your outline into ChatGPT and get a pretty awful paper. But by realizing that paper is awful, you'll realize how you want to write it. And the words will come.
You can also do this if you get stuck after paragraphs, or with tricky transitions. Input your outline and what you have written, and tell ChatGPT to continue the paper.
If at any point you find yourself copy-pasting from ChatGPT, you're doing it wrong. You're not using ChatGPT to generate writing. You're using it to generate inspiration.
Now go forth and never stare at a blinking cursor until you give yourself a panic attack again.
Hey guys!

okay yes it's often bad and hard and sometimes i am so anxious my whole body feels like it's vibrating but also at the same time the gps took me a different way on my drive and i got to see more of the river than i usually do and yesterday the sun was still above the horizon after 7pm and that was amazing and the whole sky turned an orange-gold like how they try to make ice cream taste; you know, one of those evenings that just tears you open no matter how jaded you get. it's warm for the first time here and people had lined up against the water just to stand outside and watch the sunset
and yeah it's tax season no i haven't done mine yet but when i mentioned it offhand in a single side-comment three days later my friend sent me a list of helpful tips and followed up to see if i'd need help on them
there's this parking lot for a walking trail near where i live and one of the two google reviews is my actual favorite: love it here. there were so many beautiful parking spots but sadly we could only take one. and no this person isn't going to go viral and probably the only people navigating to this spot are extremely local - but there's something so precious to me about someone taking the time to write something that will make strangers in their community laugh, even though there's no way for me to tell them good one! directly
yes i am not doing well sometimes i'm doing even very-badly but recently i have been given enough breathing room to say okay, this situation is bad, but then it will be over, and you will be moving onto the next thing and it's true that i need to get groceries and pay rent and argue with my health insurance but it is also true that in the absolute stress and anarchy of my life today someone recognized my dog before they recognized me and was so excited because "they tell everyone about the greyhound in the area and didn't get a picture before so can they take a picture now please"
in class we all stand in a circle and are all grown adults and for a moment while the teacher is figuring something out, we all hold hands, just to be silly and connected. for no reason at all at 8pm on a thursday my friends and i start breaking out the dance moves to high school musical. my coworker gchats me during a meeting about the book he recommended to me and i'm enjoying reading
i help a high school set up for a star-themed dance and while putting up streamers i find graffiti that says if you're reading this, i love you, and we're both going to get out of here right next to fuck everyone, live out of spite, don't let the fuckers make you die. on the bridge where i walk my dog someone has written i love you and on the sidewalk in chalk someone has written i love you and on the side of the water tower someone has written i love you
at the bottom of a text post an internet poet says - i love you, i love you, i love you. i've never met you, i love you because you exist and we exist together. and isnt that enough for now. just for this moment, i mean. like, if you just close your eyes and breathe - somewhere, across this world, i love you, because you're here with me.
I had a thought, y'know when you meet someone and you tell them your name and they immediately have to find a way to relate your name to a personal experience?
when you introduce yourself, most often the person hears your name and says:
Oh! I have a friend named (name)
Oh, damn, you have the same name as my dog!
We have the same name!
Like the video game character?
That sounds familiar, do I know you?
Can I call you -nickname- for short?
Nice to meet you, I'm (name)
Other (tell me in the tags or smth ig)
is everyone else going through it this week. it feels like everyone burnt out simultaneously
post cancelled my friend got into her top choice college and I feel like aang after he watched a baby get born and felt hope for the world again everybody stop being depressing on my post weâll get through this

Beautiful from Ordinary Days
Sometimes you read a line from a book and itâs like something from your own head or something from your journal. And that part of you is a bit more defined, a bit sharper, and a bit easier to understand and explain to others.
