In my area, they are the only woodpecker that's any color other than red, white, and black. Even the yellow-bellied sapsucker (best woodpecker name ever) doesn't really have a belly that's THAT yellow.

Those of you in the 'States, based on your location, what nation would you be part of if you weren't United Statesian? 

My ancestors would have been immigrants to the Mohawk nation, one of the nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederation. 

What actually happened, apparently, is they were refugees who were shipped over by Britain for cheap labor in 1710 and some historical societies like to say the Palatines had a great relationship with the Mohawks of the time but... The way I figure it, even if that's true, that's just - in comparison to other white people, right? So…

I live near one of the sacred sites of the Haudenosaunee, called Cohoes falls.

The story goes that it's where the Mohawks "tested" the Peacemaker, who brought the message of peace from the Creator.

He'd given them a demonstration: bend one arrow, and SNAP! It would break. Put together five arrows in a bundle, like the five nations of the Haudenosaunee, bend that? Won't break so easily.

If that sounds familiar, it's because colonial powers plagiarized the idea. You can see 13 arrows - representing the 13 colonies - clutched in the talons of the eagle in the back of your $1 bills:

Anyway, they "tested" him, it's said, by making him climb out on a tree hanging out over the falls. Then they chopped it down. The Peacemaker, of course, went over the falls with the trees.

Personally, I think it sounds like they just wanted to get rid of the guy.

But he lived!

Eventually all five nations joined together in a treaty commemorated by the Hiawatha Belt. The design is used for the current-day Haudenosaunee flag, too:

OK way way back in 1710, my ancestors came through via Lenni Lenape turf.

Come to think of it, it was NYC, which even in 1710 was a city. And SO many people's ancestors came through NYC.

4. He obviously doesn't even want to be with her and can barely bring himself to treat her with the slightest bit of interest. How exactly is he thinking this is going to pan out?

5. He knows 100% knows his brother is ass-over-el ows for the girl but just keeps his bullshit up.

7. He's now letting his nobles call the shots, putting her through a series of trials with AT BEST vague information as a warning, truthfully just dumping everything on her at the last minute with an audience and doing the same to his brother. Because he gives that much of a shit.

8. So now she goes through these trials and risks life and limb and the big prize at the end is an unwanted forced marriage to this absolute tool.

9. Don't even give me the "united Ilya" bullshit. What's happening to all the underprivileged while all Kitt's and the other wealthy asshole's bullshit is going on? Same ol' same ol'. You cannot convince me they couldn't do at least as much good letting these assholes collapse in on themselves and setting up a refuge for escapees elsewhere or honestly? Practically anything other than what's happening at this point in the plot.

It's easy to think of the American people as easily led, and perhaps a certain population is; but there's always a line. Where that line is differs depending on who you are, but he keeps crossing the line for more and more groups of people. Larger and larger groups of people.

And that's when we become ungovernable - because our government was deliberately constructed to avoid too much power getting into one person's hands. And I love that for us.
