Lmao we have to fucking destroy this company are you fucking kidding me with this shit
Google is transforming Search from a list of links into an AI-powered experience filled with conversational answers, autonomous agents, and
Remember that xkcd about how Google searches are shit now? What if we made them even worse for no reason?
I will vote for any candidate who promises to go scorched fucking earth on every tech company. Break every single one of them up into companies based around a single product and then split those in thirds. Weaponize existing antitrust laws to the hilt and pass the most draconian versions of them ever seen on this planet. Nationalize google search specifically. Pass consumer privacy protections strict enough to kill the data harvesting industry for good. Make all of these fuckers go bankrupt for this rent-seeking shit
(Repost, because the first time apparently angered the robots.) Once more unto the breach, dear friends (sigh)—this time, we'll look at the ways AI keeps eating the internet (and itself 🐍).
-
It's a well known fact that Big Tech scrapes material to train their LLMs—but what does scraping actually look like? What exactly goes into it?
Even before their use of the controversial “Books 1” and “Books 2” datasets was exposed, Big Tech’s data appetites extended deep into the open web. In a 2023 investigation, the Washington Post analyzed Google's C4 dataset, which was used to train their early LLM models. The Post found content from over 15 million websites, including heaps of original writing: news articles, academic writing, personal and public blogs, and (of course) fanfic were all represented.
Much of this writing came from well-known and well-loved hosting sites: Tumblr, AO3, scribd, b-ok.org, Patreon, Kickstarter, medium, WordPress, Blogspot, LiveJournal, etc.
The C4 dataset itself was sourced from a large database belonging to Common Crawl, a nonprofit who's whole raison d'etre is to scrape the internet bare. Nearly every name in Big Tech has dipped into Common Crawl's enormous database to train their AI models (OpenAI, Meta, and so on—all of whom "donate" to the non-profit for privileged access.)
Common Crawl is definitely a bit… problematique. They've been known to conceal contents in their archives; and shoot down simple requests for attribution of scraped content: "It's not our job," said Rich Skrenta, its executive director, in conversation with The Atlantic.
And once the data's scraped into the archive, it's nearly impossible to remove. Skrenta said: "you can't delete anything from [the Common Crawl archive]. (Which is why AO3 received a big no when it requested for all scraped data to be removed in 2023.)
If that weren't awful enough, the Common Crawl's databases are actively making the internet (even) worse, more dangerous, more racist, more generally fucked up. In a 2023 paper analyzing datasets used to train image-generators, researchers found that models trained on one of the Common Crawl datasets were "five times more likely […] to label black male faces as criminals." Another study in the same year discovered that a different Common Crawl data set "contained thousands of images of verified and suspected [CSAM]." (Karen Hao, Empire of AI, 137)
Since 2023’s blowback, the behemoths have gotten hyper-secretive about the datasets they use to train their AI. We don't know what OpenAI’s GPT-4o was trained on, much less Sora or GPT-5.
We also know that in 2024, LLM trainers hit a data-wall. Meaning, the models exhausted all the available data on the internet, pushing them to find new, and non-public, sources of data.
Given the secrecy of it all, we should all be, hmm........ a lil skeptical of any claims of transparency.
And then, of course—there's Google. When you’ve spent decades cataloguing the internet (and when you effectively own the archive), training your own model—Gemini—comes with certain… conveniences.
But! More on that next time… 🫣 - the Ellipsus Team xo
ooooh you want to use linux and decentralize all of your accounts and detach yourself from every megacorporation and use free and open source software that's backed by a massive community effort and those striped thigh highs are looking really appealing to you right now oooh.

Me again! Can't believe we haven't talked in over a year. I delighted in our conversations even if you're the sort of person who would flippantly say "delulu". It's honestly for the better that I stopped writing you anons but I can't bring myself to care in this moment
I used to worry I'd accidentally send you messages without anon and you'd recognize my blog (from your likes, presumably because you were subscribed to a tag I used). Silly thing to worry about when the entire appeal was talking to a stranger who shared an interest with me
Now your blog stands abandoned, or appears to be. I don't even remember what the "apology poem" was. I was undeniable unwell when last we talked. I'm unwell now, but differently. Things do appear to be looking up, however, in some ways. I have no idea what you're like. In fact, I have zero faith you'll see this message which is a real shame because I'm sure part of me will want to read this back some day
Sorry for leaving flower xoxo
It has indeed been a while, even longer than before. Time flies by I admit, and despite what is said lately, it feels as if we're technologically regressing when I struggle to receive notification from the people who make an effort to reach me.
There's something very melancholic about abandoned blogs and liminal digital spaces, despite the fact that detachment from the online world is a sought after luxury nowadays that should honestly be followed with congratulatory wishes. I of course wasn't congratulated.
And life wasn't always rosy.
But I like to come back once in a while and lurk.
I will be honest, you hadn't written in a while. Despite having access to infinite content, I always end up feeling like I'm just a barely-existing observer. You ever rarely get to speak and have honest, anonymous conversation. Can you blame me if scrolling here lost meaning after the silence?
I'm sad to hear about your unwell state, but glad that things are looking up. It's interesting that despite your total, pain-staking anonymity you refrained from speaking on your mental state, even when all social barriers were absent. Does it go to show that people can never truly be themselves to another even when the mask is on? Or is it just you?
It's been a while since you last wrote, I hope that light you saw at the end of the tunnel was a hopeful sunrise. Maybe you'll tell me if you ever come back.
(The sort of person who would use "delulu"? Don't insult me.)
Honestly, I could see you becoming an AI bro. I doubt you will, but the vibes are there.
Just tell me to kill myself like the other hate comments do, man. I like those more than this.
Kill yourself
Thank you
If Lestat asked “would you still love me if I was a worm” Louis would say no immediately, and wouldn’t even hesitate. It starts one of their biggest crashouts
If Daniel asked “would you still love me if I was a worm” Armand would reveal the beautiful worm enclosure with sun lamps and fresh substrate he keeps prepared for such an occasion because You Never Know When Your Partner Might Transform Into A Worm
Tbh armand would love him in a way that he would cut worm daniel in half to see if he could have two
Fuck genAI. A reminder that if you support genAI in any form, use chatGPT instead of your brain etc - pls unfollow me 🥰

Lookalikes
This young man had been alive in this cell; this rotted food and milk were here either to nourish or torment him. He had died in the cell, trapped with those corpses, knowing full well he would soon be one of them. God, to suffer that! To suffer that! (...) Why wasn't I locked in this cell? What test had I passed that I was not screaming now as I shook the bars? - The Vampire Lestat
NEPOFLEDGLING SPOTTED
POV: You are Armand, and you have been sitting here for 46 hours trying to understand why Lestat didn't fall in love with you after you tried to rape him… 💔😔 He didn't fall in love with you and didn't let you fuck him... “Where I could possibly go wrong, I don't understand!…😭” And also his maman really pissed you off!
A being of blazing insight and impact, a guy with things to say to you. - Lestat, Memnoch the Devil

Finding out my coworkers watch interview with the vampire too feels like doing 10 lines of coke
I spent way too much time on this reaction for it to stay in my group chat, so enjoy:
