Being around male athletes 24/7 really puts into perspective how insanely masculine most men's sports culture still is. There's this constant pressure to perform a certain version of masculinity, and showing any kind of softness almost feels like you're going against the grain.

I genuinely can't imagine any of the guys from my boxing team casually saying they spend their free time baking cakes or making chocolate, they'd get laughed at and clowned relentlessly.

Which is why I think Will and Mack are incredibly lucky, not because they're different, but because they seem to be in an environment where they can be different without having to hide it.

The fact that will can talk about baking or mack can be openly affectionate and nobody in the room seems interested in policing them for it feels kind of miraculous. They get to exist as these soft, slightly dorky versions of themselves in one of the most hypermasculine environments imaginable, and their teammates seem to meet them with affection instead of ridicule.

well YES and their desperation to be seen as a #hockeyduo. like sorry but posting a joint hype edit is probably one of the funniest willmack moments of all time. but it really speaks to how badly they want to be seen as a package deal. we talk about mack gunning for the C a lot but we need to start talking about will gunning for the A. and how he only wants to be the alternate to mack’s captain and how i’m sureeeee they’re in gmmgs office with a shitty powerpoint about how they both need letters and can’t do it without the other etc etc etc. and i think a mack c/will a would be beneficial for both of them. as i said in my last ask ive already seen will make subtle moves to step towards leadership. and i think he would do a good job as mack’s a talking him off a ledge (à la rookie year every time they were losing). and on that topic. mack has also (seemingly) matured a ton since last season.

like he used to be going through the horrors on the bench 24/7 flipping his shit whenever they were down, and you’d see will talking him down from suicide. and now we see him laughing when they’re down by 2 and ella langley posting despite losing the olympics and not making the playoffs and etc etc etc. obviously he’s still young and has a lot of room to grow and mature, but as an outsider i’m impressed with where he is compared to last year.
