side note, teaching myself to pronounce that last one felt like learning a new fucking language
hey so uh next year will be a decade of dobonhonkeros. how about that shit huh.
Happy ten year anniversary of this post.
Something I see getting overlooked a lot when discussing queercoding in historical media is that in many cases it's not evidence that the writers secretly shipped it; it was aimed at straight dudes specifically to freak them out. Depicting a male villain as sexually interested in a male hero reads as horror to the cishet male audience. Like, Venom didn't spend years and years being blatantly characterised as Spider-Man's creepy stalker ex because Marvel's writers were all closeted yaoi fans. That was meant to be scary â which of course doesn't mean you can't read it differently, but don't give them credit they don't deserve!
This is easily one of the CRAZIEST videos I've ever gotten. I was rafting down a river when a Yellow Jacket came, landed on my bright pink waterproof phone pouch, and started drinking from the water droplets that had gathered there.
The most amazing part is how the water droplet magnifies the Hornet's mouth parts, so you get to see them up-close!!!! It was FASCINATING to witness!
Here's some of my favorite still shots from that video:
What do you think? đĽ°

It's so important to acknowledge the very real and sometimes truly horrible failings of the healthcare profession and the pharmaceutical industry while never ever ever letting them drive us into the arms of pseudoscientific bullshit. This is something I feel really strongly about.
On this day, 21 July 1936, one of the most iconic photos of the Spanish civil war was taken on the rooftop terrace of what is now the Iberostar/Apple store buildings in Barcelona. Taken by German photographer Hans Gutmann, the photo depicts 17-year-old socialist Marina GinestĂ . Although she is captured holding a rifle, it is doubtful that GinestĂ actually fought on the front lines during the war. Instead, as she was partially brought up in France and spoke fluent French, Catalan and Spanish, she worked as a journalist during the war and more notably as a translator and interpreter for the Soviet correspondent from the Pravda newspaper, MijaĂl Koltsov. Gutmann had come to Barcelona to cover the anti-fascist Popular Olympiad games and, at the onset of the war, decided to stay to cover the conflict. He then castilized his name to Juan GuzmĂĄn. A communist himself, he had easy access to what was formerly the Hotel ColĂłn, a building taken over by the PSUC (the Catalan Socialist Unification Party) where he took many of his renowned photos. When the photo was taken of young GinestĂ , she had never held a rifle in her hands - GuzmĂĄn offered it to her to pose with, and the same rifle appears in another photo in the same hotel of the writer Ludwig Renn. GinestĂ survived the war and fled to France as a refugee. She later escaped the Second World War by fleeing to the Dominican Republic. With the rise of the dictatorship under Trujillo, GinestĂ moved to Venezuela, where she settled for many years working as a journalist and a novelist. In 2014, she passed away in Paris, France, aged 94. Hello Mr. Lon,
I am a larval mechanical engineer and am entering my senior of college year soon. On top of the impending senior design hell, I have to decide soon if I want to go to graduate school (probably just for my masters) or not. It feels like a very big decision and everyone I talk to keeps giving me conflicting advice.
Youâre an engineer that seems to have ended up in a fairly stable career, do you have any advice for figuring out what I want to do for the next 2-5 years of my life?
Other people have their own opinions on graduate work, so take me with a grain of salt, but I don't really recommend going straight from a bachelors to a masters. Go into industry for a minute, play around, figure out what kind of work you specifically like doing, then use the masters as a way to specialize in that. Worst case, you don't like any of it and you can use the masters as a lateral move to something adjacent. Maybe mechanical jobs don't really tickle your fancy like you'd hoped, but aerospace or robotics seem fun. Bam, masters gives you an in. Also, jobs will often offer to pay your tuition for your masters, but the cost of the tuition is truly miniscule compared to the time, so don't fuss over that too much. If you have to pay yourself, it's not a huge deal.
Engineering as a job is very different from engineering as a study, which is unfortunate, because it can mean that things you enjoyed learning about aren't actually fun to do. Or vice versa. Learning your own tastes is part of the post-college experience, which is a little nerve wracking, but also, pretty fun. It's sort of like dating yourself. You get to start asking questions like who am I, what do I like, where do I want to go, what makes my life fun. It's a little existential, but it's important and frankly very satisfying to figure out. You might be receiving conflicting advice because people are retroactively describing the fastest path to get to the place that made them happy, and not the process they used to find that place. Focus on the process and the destination will solve itself.
Having so many options is really scary, but I think you're in for a grand adventure! Best of luck!

there is no acceptable explanation for this post being given a mature content warning outside of saying that you are an adult baby on the cyber nanny website!

"Why do you talk so much about being intersex?"
Over 90% of parents of visibly intersex children opt for cosmetic surgery on their infants.
The ones that don't experience medical violence then, likely experience it as a teenager.
I didn't.
I am very rare in that I did not experience medical violence.
Why? Because I learned what intersexuality was as a young age, and I actively fought against what doctors wanted to do to me. All the way down to legal research on what medical care minors can be forced into. I remember walking into that doctor's appointment with the state law written down that proved that if I did not consent they could not do surgery.
That is why intersex activism is important. It saved me and it will save more.

how about some monotypic bird genuses? ex. kagu, wallcreeper, etc
Yes, but have you considered...
Wallcreeper (Tichodroma muraria), family Tichodromidae, found across high mountain areas of Europe and Asia
This species is the only member of this genus and family.
photograph by Mathieu Bally - Wildlife Photography
Bearded Reedling aka Bearded Tit (Panurus biarmicus), family Panuridae, order Passeriformes
photograph by Carlo Galliani
Sunbittern (Eurypyga helias), family Eurypygidae, order Eurypygiformes, found in southern Central America and northern South America
The only member of this family

Kagu or Cagou (Rhynochetos jubatus), family Rhynochetidae, order Eurypygiformes, endemic to New Caldeonia
ENDANGERED.
This bird is the only member of its family.
It is most closely related to the Sunbittern.

Hamerkop (Scopus umbretta), family Scopidae, order Pelicaniformes, Ethiopia
The taxonomic affinities of this bird have been greatly debated over the years, and now is believed to be in the Pelecaniformes.
This is the only bird in this family.
Their closest relatives are the Shoebill.

Shoebill (Balaeniceps rex), family Balaenicipitidae, Mabamba Swamp, Uganda
This bird is the only member of its family.
The taxonomic affinities of this bird have long been debated. It currently rests within the order Pelicaniformes It was, in the past, often places in the Ciconiiformes).
Its closest living relative is most likely the Hamerkop.

Malaysian Rail-Babbler (Eupetes macrocerus), male calling, family Eupetidae, order Passeriformes, Malaysia
The only member of this family
photograph by Janetli SF **Xiao Guo Tai**
Yellow-breasted Chat (Icteria virens), family Icteriidae, Knoxville, Tennessee, USA
This species was once considered to be a wood warbler, family Parulidae, but is now placed in its own family (of which it is the only member).

Hoatzin (Opisthocomus hoazin) aka âStink Turkeyâ, family Opisthocomidae, order Opisthocomiformes
The only living member of the bird order Opisthocomiformes.
This leaf-eating bird uses foregut fermentation, in its enlarged crop, to help break down its food. (The ferementation is where the smell comes from, which gives it the name âPavo Apestosoâ)
They live in vegetation at the edges of lakes, streams, and rivers.
The young have 2 small claws on the fronts of the wingsthat help them climb through vegetation.

So crazy how you have the worst day of your life but then the next day the sun keeps shining and the airâs just a little cooler w the onset of fall and you realize that thereâs nothing you canât come back from because the only time it will ever be too late is when weâre dead and not ever before
I vividly remember talking to one of my favorite professors about how Iâm scared things will fall apart after graduation and how Iâm so unused to change and her just going âif things fall apart then they do and u just pick up the pieces and start over again and itâs fine. Things falling apart is not this mammoth fear u should be worried aboutâ and I remember these words every time I want to pursue or seize something bc literally the worst thing that can happen is it doesnât work out âŚ.. and then I just pick up the pieces and start all over again

Weird Fantasy (1950) #18 written by Al Feldstein and drawn by Joe Orlando, with editor Bill Gaines
So he said it can't be a Black. So I said, "For God's sakes, Judge Murphy, that's the whole point of the Goddamn story!" So he said, "No, it can't be a Black". Bill just called him up and raised the roof, and finally they said, "Well, you gotta take the perspiration off". I had the stars glistening in the perspiration on his Black skin. Bill said, "Fuck you", and he hung up.
Al Feldstein, Tales of Terror: The EC Companion
Just to add context for those not aware of the impact of this story.
The reason it was so important for narrative purposes, was that the plot concerns the visit of the Astronaut, in his completely opaque spacesuit, to a planet populated entirely by self-aware robots (originally from Earth) who have built their own society and are petitioning to be allowed to interact with Earth again as equals.
They have a democratic government and free choice of careers etc. as the orange robot serving as guide tells the Astronaut.
The Astronaut notices that there are two different types of robot on this world; the orange ones, who are in charge, gifted access to all information and facilities. and the blue robots, who are seen as more limited in function, have less access to information and resources, and are not allowed positions of power or as wide a choice of employment opportunities. Even transportation is segregated.
The Astronaut investigates further and discovers that the blue and orange robots are actually structurally identical, there is absolutely no difference between their potential or capabilities, and it is only because the orange robots are instructed by their Educator system to consider themselves superior, that the difference exists.
The Astronaut tells the robots they are not ready for re-alignment with Earth, until they come to terms with their own unfairness, and how Earth had had to deal with this issue themselves. When that time comes, the robots will be able to ally with Earth.
Then he leaves in his spaceship, and it's only in that one final panel that we see the Astronaut is black.
Not subtle, nor should it be, but for 1950 this was a breathtakingly powerful statement, perhaps the first of it's kind in the genre.
The black character was not a caricature, or comedy relief, he was a main character in his own right, a human who "simply" was black.
Ok, but this story is sadly revolutionary even now. That is not just a human who happens to be black, as far as every other character in this story is concerned this is the most important, maybe even the only human they ever see, who happens to be black.
As depressing as that is, but a black person just casually representing the entirety of humanity is a breathtakingly powerfull statement even today, a quarter of a century later.
*a breathtakingly powerful statement even today, three quarters of a century later
Apparently some people still need to hear this so: using an 'ai checker' is still using ai. If you are feeding someone's fic to one of these checkers, you will still not be sure their fic is ai because they are not 100% accurate, but you can be 100% sure that you are using ai. For fic. Furthermore you are doing the work of an ai scraper for them. You are, personally, feeding the machine. There is no actual excuse for using an ai checker on fanfic as a hobby. YOU are the problem.
If you think a fic is ai, mute it and move on. That's it. That's all you do.
Um. Yikes
