Watched two more Jenna movies
So, I've been meaning to conciously get into Jenna Ortega's filmography for a while now so I just started watching some movies with her. What follows are copy+pastes from my Letterboxd wich I have for some reason. I've also already watched Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and Hurry Up Tomorrow when they came out in theaters.... I... I need to know where The Weeknd lives... and how to break into his house.... I don't WANT to hurt him, I just want my 14€ back 'cause that's how much I paid for the ticket to that abomination. ______________________________________________________________ Death Of A Unicorn (2025) https://letterboxd.com/potatooni/film/death-of-a-unicorn/ Honestly, I feel like this movie is overhated.
It doesn’t want to be anything more than a straight-forward creature feature and it suceeds in that department with some competently tense moments, good monster designs and varied kills.
If anything it’s biggest problem is that it also wants to be a comedy wich just falls flat. The humour centers around characters having awkward interactions and it just doesn’t work, primarly because of how generic they are.
We’ve got an old CEO, his superficial wife, their douchebro son, the ruthless security chief, the spineless lawyer, his opinionated daughter, the scientists and the competent butler.
All of them are played well but don’t lend themselves to good comedy.
If anything Rudd and Ortega felt like they’re in a completly different movie with their performances being more constistently dramatic and emotional compared the rest of the cast, who’re going for something more cartoony.
The more naturalistic dialogue was actually pretty well done and made everyone feel more realistic, wich is hard to do.
It’s a movie that wears it’s clicheés on it’s sleeves, with plenty of nods to other monster franchises, and is a pretty good time overall despite not being groundbreaking.
3/5
Defenitely worth a watch if you’re a fan of Alien or Jurassic Park. ______________________________________________________________
The Fallout (2022) https://letterboxd.com/potatooni/film/the-fallout/
I did have some issues with the tonal shifts from scene to scene, wich alternate wildly between borderline comedic drug trips and introspective conversations, but I ultimately realized they actually complement the emotional core of the movie, that is a confusing flurry of feelings after a traumatic event, quite well. It's an appropriately messy movie about a messy subject matter.
Based on the nature of the movie I expected Jenna's performance to be limited to crying and sobbing (wich is not a criticism since she's really good at this) so I was pleased to see her portraying Vada with a full range of emotions throughout the entire movie, showing off well what she's capable of as an actress.
It's a genuinly good movie wich does it's best, and mostly succeeds, to tackle a serious subject matter in a respectful manner. Only slightly undercut by some dragging scenes, like Vada's various drug trips wich go on for just a little too long, and the underutilization of some characters, specifically the dad whom the movie seems to mostly forget about for the most part.
It maybe tries to fit in a bit too many elements in but is overall a good watch.
