I feel like if Lan Zhan managed to convince Wei Ying to come with him to gusu in the first life, even if he fully explained that he loved him. I feel like it still would have made things worse and I dont think Lan Zhan fully realizes how bad things could get(in the second life, especially post whipping he does). The Lan clan, especially the elders are judgmental, they allowed their leader to keep a woman prisoner and rape her for heirs. They did not give said woman a fair trial because again they are judgmental, and hypocritical and see everything in black and white to their rules(not to mention misogynistic). To keep her in line they used her children against her. Also isn't pretty convenient she died before they were fully old enough to hear her side of their story and for her to fully explain her situation to them from her own mouth? So imagine if Lan Zhan did bring Wei Ying home with him, with his reputation of demonic cultivation that I know he still won't give up. Lan Zhan hasn't fully been hit that following the rules exactly doesn't always mean that your d oing something moral and just. He doesn't understand that their corporal punishment is severely flawed and unjust. I just feel like that situation would have been so much worse and heartbreaking for them.

And I think we're meant to understand that Lan Wangji has wanted that for a long time. He's famous for going "where the chaos is" which sounds a hell of a lot like 'someplace that is not cloud recess.'
