European here! We too have highways people should not/cannot cross, this is not a USA invention. We have fences around them to stop stupid people from wandering into high speed dense traffic. Noone will just walk into the traffic.
Fellow europeans WILL assume however, that there is a crossing to be found somewhere. A pedestrian bridge or a tunnel. A clearly marked path for pedestians and cyclists

Nope. No such thing exists. Pedestrian traffic is illegal on major US highways and there are no cycling paths or footpaths by them. They are for auto traffic ONLY, by law. There are no foot crossings or tunnels. There is just 8 lanes of bumper to bumper traffic doing 115 kph.
Just pay the $80 for the bus or train folks.
